His attacker, John Lotter, was sentenced to death. The events leading to Teena's death were depicted in the movie Boys Don't Cry. [64] The county was found to be a negligent party in Teena's death and was ordered to pay $17,360 in restitution to Teena's family. [65]
California voters rejected two initiatives to repeal the death penalty by popular vote in 2012 and 2016, and they narrowly adopted in 2016 another proposal to expedite its appeal process.
