Fifteen northerly sections of survey area township 7 north range No. 7 east in Flint Township plus southerly sections of Genesee Township were set off by the Michigan Legislature as Kearsley Township in 1839. Kearsley was a township in the civil and ecclesiastical parish of Deane in the Salford Hundred of Lancashire. [4] The township became part of the Bolton Poor Law Union on 1 February 1837 which took responsibility for funding the Poor Law within that Union area. [5] In 1865, a local board of health was adopted for the township of Kearsley.

The City of Burton was organized as Burton Township, in 1855.Burton Township had first been a part of Flint Township. The North part of Burton was part of Kearsley Township along with the Southern part of Genesee Township from 1839 until 1843 when the township was merged back (for school purposes) into Flint Township.
