Cozad was founded in 1873 by John J. Cozad, murderer, gambler, Ohio native, and father of painter Robert Henri. Cozad was often regarded as immoral among the citizens of the early town. [3] He purchased 40,000 acres of land from the Union Pacific Railroad and laid out the future town. He built houses on some of the land to entice people to settle.

[2] One of his sons, Robert Henri, became a painter. [2] Cozad shot a man in 1882, and he sold the hotel to Stephen A. Hendee, who remained its owner until 1910. [2]
In 1873, the family moved west to Nebraska, where John J. Cozad founded the town of Cozad. [3] [4] In October 1882, Henri's father became embroiled in a dispute with a rancher, Alfred Pearson, over the right to pasture cattle on land claimed by the family. When the dispute turned physical, Cozad shot Pearson fatally with a pistol.
The Henri Museum building was originally a house that was built by John Jackson Cozad in 1873. In 1883, Cozad shot a local rancher named Alfred Pearson in Cozad. This shooting resulted from in a dispute over cattle that later escalated in a shouting match, a brawl and gun violence. The mortally wounded Pearson died a month later.
