Methodist Central College was established in 1814 by Rev. William Ault, one of the Wesleyan Methodist missionaries to Ceylon. The missionaries sailed to Ceylon from Portsmouth, England on 30 December 1813, landing in Ceylon on 29 June 1814.
The North Central province is home to the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, both of which were historical capitals of Sri Lanka during ancient times. The two cities were the capitals of the Anuradhapura kingdom (437 BCE–1017 CE) and the Polonnaruwa kingdom (1070–1232) respectively.
The objectives of this university were the propagation of Buddhism, the development of Pali and Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka and foreign countries and the provision of facilities for research in the relevant fields. The above-mentioned Act has been revised by the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka (Amendment) Act No. 37 of 1995.

Musaeus College is a Buddhist private girls' school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The school is named after its founding principal, Marie Musaeus Higgins (1855 – 10 July 1926) from Wismar , Germany , who served as the school's principal from 1891 to 1926.
