The good news is you can do any number of things under the criminal justice umbrella: corrections, forensics, policing, law enforcement, legal, you name it. Any career that includes laws, rules, and agencies designed to hold criminals accountable for their misdeeds can be included in the criminal justice bucket.

I’d like to start working soon. How long does school take?

With such a wide array of career fields available, your education program could span certificates and diplomas, associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, or even a master’s degree. It will all depend upon what you want to do, but if you plan on going the mile and earning a degree, expect two- to-four years of school, or nine months to a year for a certificate.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in school. How hard are the classes?

Again, this will depend on what you plan to study. If you go into the legal profession, you’ll need tech skills and can expect to study law, contracts, and contract writing. Pursuing a career in forensic science requires at least a bachelor’s degree in one of the natural sciences, like chemistry or biology. To be a correctional officer, you’ll need at least a high school diploma or a GED, though some agencies require some college, and if you plan to work at a federal level, the Federal Bureau of Prisons insists entry-level corrections officers have at least a bachelor’s degree.

My budget is limited. How much does it cost?

First, look for accredited education programs so you can apply for federal financial aid to help you pay for school. That said, you can expect to pay around $9,687 per year for public in-state tuition says U.S. News’ 2021 report.
