What vital records can tell

Vital records refer to any records that relate to specific life events. Either the Department of Public Health or the Bureau of Vital Statistics will maintain those records. Birth certificates are the most common example. These certificates list the name of the child given to them by their parents along with both parents’ names.

It will also show you when and where the child was born and list the name of the doctor who signed the certificate. Separation agreements are often available for couples who are legally separated. Once the couple goes through court to divorce, divorce records will also become available. A divorce record states when the couple divorced and how they divided their property along with where they lived and the names of their kids.

You’ll also find marriage certificates or licenses through these departments. These records show the names of the couple and the names of their witnesses and the person who married them. It may also list their dates of birth and occupations or addresses. Many departments also keep track of civil unions, which allow you to learn about gay couples. You can check with these departments if you need copies of death certificates, too.
