Volvo translates as “I am rolling!”. Founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson as a spin-off from a ball-bearing manufacturer SKF. In 1959, Volvo became the first to equip three-point safety belts in the Amazon and PV544. Other innovations in safety were rear-facing child seats, crumple zones, side collision protection, collapsible steering columns, and the three-way catalytic converter.

Another first for the company came when Volvo manufactured its first sports car, which was the P1800. It was introduced to the public in 1960, and found much fame in the TV series, The Saint, starring Roger Moore. In 1964, Volvo launched the Volvo 140, firstly as a saloon and later as an estate, which was their foray into family vehicles.
