What is a Freedom of Information Request?

The Freedom of Information Act allows people to request information about the Federal government. This request is known as a Freedom of Information Request, and it will involve paperwork. All Freedom of Information requests must be made in writing in order to be considered. Some Federal agencies will now allow people to request information electronically.

Any agency information can be requested through a Freedom of Information Request, although they will not always be released. In order to increase the chances of getting the information, include a clear description of the information you are looking for. Since the agencies will not do research for you, being clear and direct will help the request get approved.
