Colette Store Showcases Swarovski Crystal Treasures

We never tire of Swarovski crystal bedazzled items. If you are of a similar mind then the Colette shop is pretty much heaven right about now. They currently have a variety of tempting Swarovski collaborations up for sale featuring some of the most exciting names in design. There are curving jewelry pieces from Zaha Hadid, Cinderella-worthy pumps from Maison Martin Margiela, a surfboard from Quiksilver, water corks from Evian and baroque brooches from Christopher Kane. The glittering sneakers shown above are a special edition of the Jeremy Scott x adidas J-Wings and sell for 2,500 euros (only one size available).

The Complete Works of Zaha Hadid

Architect Zaha Hadid, the first woman to receive the coveted Pritzker Prize (in 2004), is celebrated in a new book from Rizzoli titled Zaha Hadid: Complete Works. Hadid's designs are a "fusion of a Western modernist education and Middle Eastern art", as described in the introduction by Aaron Betsky, Director of the Cincinnati Art Museum: "...the intricate patterns that defeated comprehension and embodied the collaborative efforts of hands transforming reality into a sensuous surface, simple spaces into lush ones." The book encompasses Hadid's architectural designs as well as furniture, interiors, sculptures and objects such as bowls and jewelry. Included are her most recent commissions, such as the Guggenheim-Hermitage Museum in Lithuania and the Aquatics Centre for the 2012 London Olympics, as well as her most renowned works, including as the Vitra Fire Station in Germany and the Lois and Richard Lowenthal Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati.

Louis Vuitton: Art, Fashion and Architecture

A lavish new coffee table book from Rizzoli titled Louis Vuitton: Art, Fashion and Architecture is a seductive anthology of the famed French fashion house's collaborations with an international group of elite artists, architects, designers, and photographers, including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, David LaChapelle, Annie Leibovitz, Takashi Murakami (whose updated LV monogram is featured on the cover) Richard Prince and Stephen Sprouse. Beautiful images are interspersed with critical essays that examine and position Louis Vuitton's patronage, under the guidance of Artistic Director Marc Jacobs, during "one of the most fertile periods of contemporary art and design." The book is divided alphabetically so as to serve as a sort of encyclopedia of the many collaborations, commissions and sponsorships Vuitton, a cornerstone of the LVMH luxury goods empire, has engaged in over the years.

Zaha Hadid Triflow Tap

Architect and designer Zaha Hadid has put her curvilinear aesthetic sense to creating a tap for British manufacturer Triflow, a brand which has created a three-way tap. The Hadid tap brings spout, body and handle into one flowing shape. It channels filtered water through a separate waterway keeping it separate from the hot and cold water streams which are controlled by the tap handle. The filtered water is turned on with a electronic button.

Chanel Pulls the Plug on Mobile Art Exhibition

Chanel has decided to pull the plug on its avant-garde and attention-getting but extremely costly Mobile Art Pavilion exhibition due to the economic crisis. In October my colleague Tracy Chait reported on the Pavilion's installation in New York's Central Park. Designed by starchitect Zaha Hadid in collaboration with Chanel kingpin Karl Lagerfeld, the high-tech Pavilion (above) is full of self-serving if stylish art inspired by Chanel's iconic quilted handbag. For the Central Park installation alone Chanel paid $400,000 for the space plus a charitable donation. Originating in Hong Kong, it traveled to Tokyo before landing in NYC and was scheduled to continue on to London, Moscow and Paris. Chanel reps cited a "refocusing of investments" in deciding to bring the tour to a premature end.

Zaha Hadid's Chanel Pavilion Lands in Central Park

Yesterday Zaha Hadid's Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion made its way to Central Park, the latest stop on its whirlwind world tour. The curled shiny structure is full of art inspired by Chanel's iconic 2.55 handbag -- pieces like an enormous Chanel handbag spilled over. The work has drawn criticism for its cluelessness, and its place in the Park, which the New York Times calls an "instrument of psychological healing for the weary." Apparently Chanel's little interlocking Cs don't have quite the same calming effect, even when they're wrapped up in Hadid's creativity.

Chanel paid $400,000 to rent space in the park, and has additionally made a donation to the Central Park Conservancy.

Zaha Hadid Designs Shoes

Architect Zaha Hadid has stretched herself before by designing something other than buildings (like this cutlery set) and she apparently liked the feeling because she's at it again, except now she's designing shoes. Hadid has partnered up with eco-friendly shoe company Melissa to produce this pair of crazy looking shoes in two different colors: red and black. Made primarily of plastic with sweeping lines and loops galore, these shoes are not particularly attractive (they look kinda like shredded up jelly sandals to me) but then lots of cutting edge fashion starts off being under-appreciated. Look for them to debut in September at the Dover Street Market in London for £200.

The Opus, Zaha Hadid's Unique Vision For Dubai

This rather startling building is the Opus development in the Business Bay district in Dubai. The $266.7 million project is being created by real estate developer Omniyat Properties and will appear to hover above the ground. The development is actually three separate towers which appear as one single cube with an asymmetrical hole called "the void" in the center. The outside of the towers will be covered in a glass façade featuring patterns. The Opus will hold retail space and residences and the top floor will include a beach deck, reflective pool, shaded roof terrace and a gym. Construction is due to start later this year and the project should be completed by 2010.

Futuristic Kitchen by Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid is an architect known for her innovative and deconstructionist designs, which are found throughout the world. During Design Week in Milan, Hadid created a futuristic kitchen setting out of DuPont Corian. The Z-Island kitchen included two main units, one associated with "fire," which housed the cooktop, and one associated with "water," which had the sink and dishrack. In addition to these fairly basic functions, the "sensory- responsive kitchen environment" had multimedia sound and video equipment embedded into the islands, all of which could be controlled with a central touch panel. The modular wall storage featured a coating that gave it "advanced sound and light diffusion capabilities" to enhance the overall experience of being in the room.

Z Island by DuPont Corian

Is this the kitchen of the future? Innovative architect Zaha Hadid partnered with Corian and Ernestomeda to create the Z Island by DuPont Corian. The kitchen island, which was shown off at Milan Design week, has two free-standing island units, one for "fire" and one for "water," a modular wall cabinet, a wall covering system with special light and sound diffusion capabilities, and a long work bench. The main island unit can change from a horizontal cooking and eating surface into a vertical digital surface with an LCD screen for TV or computer use and an iPod. The cooking area has a special heating plate and the main island has a touch control panel. The wall treatment has acoustic properties and a customized LEDs that allows the user to change the music and lighting. The kitchen island even has a scent diffusion system that can be programmed to dispense different scents throughout the day. Pictures of the Z island in Milan can be found at designws.com.
