Yellow Diamond Ring Top Seller at Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels Auction

As the catalogue's cover piece for Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels Auction held on December 9th in New York City, the Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond was bound to be a successful lot. Expected to sell for between $2 million and $3 million, the 36.99 carat oval diamond flanked by two shield-shaped diamonds, each weighing over 3 carats a piece, sold for $2,658,500 and rang in as the highest bid of the auction. The internally flawless diamond ring is clearly stunning and of the 430 lots in the auction it certainly warrants prestige. Although not every item sold the entire auction did bring in $20,348,375.

Tefaf Finishes with a Yellow Diamond Flourish

Tefaf, the world's largest art and antiques fair, closed Saturday with a bang as a 70.12 carat yellow diamond was sold for about $11 million! The enormous emerald cut stone was sold by London jewelry dealers Graff to a European client. Of course there were stunning pieces of art and other jewelry to be found at the exclusive fair and even with financial markets in a downward turn Tefaf experienced a 3.3% increase in attendees compared to 2007. When one buys a diamond that large, do you actually wear it or just keep it in a glass box to show your dinner guests...personally I think it would seriously weigh down my hand, not to mention completely keep me from ever putting that hand in a pocket. The Dream Diamond

Flipping through a magazine, I was caught by the new Graff ad for the "Dream" diamond. The ad depicts the 100.09 carat vivid yellow diamond set in a ring against Graff's traditional green ad background. On the web however, all the pictures show the massive gem as a pendant. The diamond was launched last month by jeweler Laurence Graff. According to an article in the IHT, Graff knew he had a showstopper when he saw the rough crystal in Kimberley, Africa. The cushion-cut stone is a bit lighter than the original 190.72 carat weight but retains a brilliant hue which makes it prized in the diamond world.

The stone is around an inch square which makes it a bit unwieldy for a ring but I'm sure someone would delight in the weight. The price is $26 million. Similarly colored diamonds in the 10-carat range have sold for around $300,000 but this gobstopper gem commands such a high price because the size of the gem makes it extremely rare.

The star of the show was the 107.46 carat fancy yellow Rojtman diamond, which sold for $1.9 million
