Ocean Empire LSV Carbon-Neutral Life Supporting Superyacht

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Green

Ocean Empire LSV Superyacht
If you've ever wanted to sail away into the sunset and never be seen again the Ocean Empire LSV Superyacht could be just the thing that makes that dream a reality as it's designed to support life and stay out at sea indefinitely. LSV stands for 'life support vessel' and refers to several key features including three sustainable energy sources (4,305 square feet of solar panels, an 861 square foot skysail that collects wind energy, and a MDR system that captures energy caused by the boat bobbing on the waves) plus two hydroponic farms and fishing facilities for an endless supply of food. And even if you're not interested in never coming home all those gadgets mean it's capable of traveling up to 12,000 nautical miles a year in a 100% carbon neutral state. You (plus nine friends and a crew of eight) will be set for life.

Designed as a charter vessel the Ocean Empire LSV is available from Sauter Carbon Offset Design for $17 million.

Sunreef Unveils 131-foot Power Catamaran Megayacht

Buyers as well as designers of motor yachts of any size face a difficult decision: make the boat too wide and it will suffer from poor performance on the water. Make it too narrow, on the other hand, and it won't have much room inside. Perhaps the ultimate solution is the catamaran.

With two hulls, a catamaran can slice through the water while straddling a wider beam to provide the best of both worlds. Sunreef is emerging as one of the most tempting builders of twin-hull power megayachts of this nature. We brought you news earlier this year of their 70-meter design, and now they've followed up with a slightly more modest 40-meter model.

Still measuring an enormous 131 feet length overall (LOA), the 40-meter Sunreef Power boasts expansive accommodations across three decks. The lowest is split between the two hulls, one containing the crew's quarters and galley, the other a pair of VIP staterooms. Two more staterooms can be found on the main deck, with the owner's suite on the upper deck. There's also a gym with deployable terrace, a pool and tender garages fore and aft.

Generous propulsion options promise a quick pace, with twin 1,920-horsepower engines driving up to 20 knots, the addition of water jets up to 32 knots and gas turbines up to 41.

BMW Splits from Oracle After Huge America's Cup Win

America's Cup champion BMW Oracle Racing says German automaker BMW is ending its sponsorship at the end of the year.

BMW has been part of the syndicate since 2002, contributing in the areas of structural engineering and lightweight, composite construction.

BMW Oracle Racing swept Alinghi of Switzerland in two races in February to win the America's Cup, the oldest trophy in international sports. Its radical trimaran design was the fastest boat in the history of the America's Cup.

BMW Oracle Racing is owned by Larry Ellison, CEO of business software maker Oracle Corp.

The reason for the break? BMW is said by sources to want to separate from technology partner Oracle over business issues.
The BMW-Oracle team won the America's Cup in February with a convincing 2-0 victory.

"In winning the 33rd America's Cup, we achieved all of our ambitious goals," said Ralf Hussmann, general manager BMW sports marketing. "We will continue to be involved in the sport on a national level."

Aquarius Yacht For Sale

Last year we reported that Israel's richest woman, billionaire Shari Arison, had put her yacht, "My Shanti" up for sale. At 212 feet, My Shanti is one of the world's top 100 yachts according to Power & Motoryacht's list for 2008. The yacht was listed for $103 million. Now, a year later the yacht has had a name change and is back on the market for a new lower price. Superyacht Times reports that the Aquarius is up for sale for 67 million euros (around $85 million) with Fraser Yachts. The 212-foot yacht was built by Amels in 2007. It has a banquet hall, cinema, eight staterooms, helipad and room for a crew of 17. The interior was designed by Terence Disdale Design.

Aquarius is one of six yachts that Fraser Yachts will feature at the upcoming 2010 Monaco Yacht Show, which will be taking place at the Port Hercules between the September 22 through 25. The show will feature more than 100 superyachts.

Princess Yachts to Sail Under its Own Flag to North America

What's in a name? Well, everything, if you listen to the branding and marketing gurus. Case in point: Princess Yachts. When the British shipyard came to the North American market several years ago, it was arrived at port under the Viking Sport Cruisers name, partnering with Viking Yachts to permeate the local market. However Princess has since been acquired by luxury giant LVMH, and is preparing to sail under its own power to this side of the Atlantic for the first time.

While the fleet will be largely the same and Viking will continue to manage sales and service for North American customers, the yachts will now be branded under the Princess name as they are overseas, where the brand has acquired considerable recognition.

The Classicist: Royal Ascot, Henley, Cowes & the English Summer Season

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Events, Sports, The Classicist

Royal ascot
The English summer season is in full swing with the year's most important and stylish sporting events on the horizon, maintaining the British traditions of horse racing, tennis, rowing, polo and sailing with elegance and ardor. Lord's Test Cricket has passed, but the Royal Ascot races, the Wimbledon tennis championships, Cartier International Polo, the Henley Royal Regatta and the yacht races at Cowes round out a full season's worth of sporting occasions that are as much fun to watch as to participate in. Herewith The Classicist's guide to the best in class (with a tip of the Panama to the London Telegraph); all you need is a pitcher of Pimm's:

Royal Ascot – June 15-19, Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire

Since it was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, the annual Royal Ascot races have become the highlight of the English social season. Ostensibly a five-day sporting event, it's also evolved into something of an immense fashion show, marked by the arrival of the Royal Family in ceremonial horse-drawn carriages every day. It has become the style for ladies to sport increasingly outrageous hats, and lately the traditional rules about "formal day dress" in the coveted Royal Enclosure have been rather loosely interpreted.

Odd 'Sofa Boat' Makes Debut at Abu Dhabi Yacht Show

Sofa Boat Yacht Show
Described as a 'floating fun platform,' the above Sofa Boat made its debut at the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show last week and was apparently quite the hit with guests. Powered entirely by an electric engine and touted as a more glamorous way to travel around crowded marinas and to and from private yachts, the Sofa Boat features a retractable sun canopy, joystick steering, a refrigerator for refreshments, and even laptop docking stations (although I can't imagine seriously having your laptop out on that thing). The craft charges via electric socket and boasts an eco-friendly 0% carbon emissions. This oddity can be yours for a mere AED59,000 (or about $16,000).

The Ariete Primo: A Luxury Yacht in a Tugboat's Body

Ariete Primo Luxury Yacht Tugboat
Luxury yachts come in all shapes and sizes, although 'tugboat' is not usually one of them. The Ariete Primo is an exception to that rule, however, as she looks like an old fashioned tugboat on the outside but sports all the expected amenities and luxury of a yacht on the inside. First launched back in 1967 the Ariete Primo was bought by her current owners in 2004 and it was at that point that she was upgraded to luxury status. Features include a chromo and aromatherapy spa, whirlpool, hamman, gym, and of course gorgeous and roomy living and dining quarters (see the gallery below). The Ariete Primo is available for charter from March - September for €110,000-€120,000. Truly an opportunity to enjoy the open seas in unique, personality-flaunting style.

Champagne Dreams and Lobster Wishes for Everyone

Can anything good come from this economic slowdown? If there's a silver lining in this cloud of a sluggish economy, it's that prices on things usually considered expensive are falling, making these small (and not so small) luxuries more affordable. Sort of. Check out these luxe items gone cheap, or at least cheaper.

LOBSTER--If you live around New England, you may have noticed the lower prices on this pricey crustacean, driven by recession-inspired lower demand. You can buy lobster locally from the fisherman on the corner for half of what it used to be a few years ago. If you don't live near the lobsters, check out your local grocery or warehouse store. Earlier this year, buyers were finding lobster for $7.99 a pound at a Costco in San Antonio, Texas. Try Hancock Gourmet Lobster to get it delivered to your door.

Forecast: Enjoy. Thanks to responsible fishing practices and lower demand, prices will stay low and supply isn't falling anytime soon.

CHAMPAGNE --With competition from first-class sparkling wines and Champagne exports dwindling, many retailers are sharply discounting bottles of bubbly. As consumers realize the abundance of high quality Champagne-like substitutes, spots like Good Cheap Wines will continue to offer their take on the best of all vine inspired libations.

Forecast: Enjoy. There will always be expensive bottles and there will always be the cheap stuff. Since inexpensive Champagne and sparkling wines are tasting better while becoming easier to find, have fun taste testing to find the one you like.

The Brands That Chinese Millionaires Love

If you are driving a Bentley, rest your left hand gently on the rearview mirror just out the window -- this is how other drivers will notice your stunning Patek Philippe watch. At least, this is how you should roll if you're a millionaire in China.

According to a survey by Hurun magazine, China's wealthy love watches by Cartier and Patek Philippe and like to slip behind the wheel of Bentleys. Vacations in the United States are also favored. But, for cigarettes and first-class flights, Chinese millionaires like to keep it local. Air China tops the list for luxury flights, and Chunghwa is the favorite tobacco, according to Hurun, with Chinese who have at least $1.46 million in wealth. Unlike cigarettes, though, the favorite cigar brand, Davidoff, is from abroad.

The average respondent to the Hurun survey takes 15 days off a year, on average, has three cars and owns five watches that cost at least $10,000 each.

According to Rupert Hoogewerf, chief researcher and founder of Hurun, the Chinese "have a greater awareness of brands." He continued to Bloomberg News, "They are also more international-minded and keener to give their children a foreign education." Four out of five are planning to send their kids to school abroad for high school and beyond, with the United States the preferred destination.

Being wealthy doesn't mean this community is finished coveting. Now that they are taking more time off, 50 percent want to buy a yacht, and 15 percent would love a private jet.

Madoff Bull(s) Worth More than $1 million

The three boats that once belonged to Bernie Madoff generated more than a million dollars for victims of his $65 billion Ponzi scheme on Tuesday. Seventy bidders registered with National Liquidators to chase after the boats, along with a Mercedes and another yacht owned by Madoff's CFO, Frak DiPascali.

"Bull," which was Madoff's 55-foot yacht, sold for $700,000, with the 38-foot "Sitting Bull" following at $320,000 and the 24-foot "Little Bull" fetching a mere $21,000. His 1999 Mercedes Benz CLK 320 convertible was good for $30,000, despite the fact that it has only 12,827 miles on it. The top seller was DiPasclai's 61-foot 2003 Viking sport fishing yacht, which sold for $950,000 at the auction.

The sales were helped along by the fact that Madoff took excellent care of his yachts. Bob Toney, president of National Liquidators, told Bloomberg News, "Mr. Madoff has taken better care of his yachts than anyone else I know," continuing, "they were crew-maintained all the time."
