Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Events

stephen colbertStephen Colbert is full of intriguing moves lately. We mentioned recently that one of his infamous portraits is being sold at auction in March. Next he's trying his hand at being a yachtsman. Colbert will take part in the biennial OnDeck Charleston Bermuda Race on May 21. He will command a crew sailing a 65-foot racing yacht from Charleston, South Carolina to Bermuda and he's bringing his show along for the ride. The race organizers have appointed him the Honorary Captain of the Fleet. Colbert said in a statement: "The ocean has had a free ride too long. Well, it has to deal with me now. Brace yourself, Atlantic!"

World's Fastest Man To Turn Sailor

usain boltHe may be the fastest man on land but how will he do on water? Award winning sprinter Usain Bolt has sponsored a yacht named Jamaica Lighting Bolt in the Clipper Around the Wold race. The skipper of the yacht, Peter Stirling has said that Usain Bolt will likely come on board the boat as a crew member during the race than runs from Panama to Jamaica, the shortest leg in this global event. The yacht arrived in Qingdao, China earlier this week to take part in the sixth round of the race and is currently ranked third. The fleet will depart from Panama on May 12 and should get to Jamaica by May 18.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, held every two years, is the largest amateur yacht race in the world. What's interesting about this race is that only the skipper is a professional. The crews are formed of volunteers who have paid to join the adventure. The four-part Clipper Training includes challenging courses that prepare novices to compete in the exciting world of ocean racing.

Wild Oats XI Sails To A Record Finish

Yesterday we mentioned that you could use Google Earth to watch the Rolex Sydney Hobart race. If you did, you had the chance to watch Wild Oats XI run a record breaking race. The newest racing maxi yacht crossed the finish line off Hobart's Castray Esplanade slicing more than an hour from the race record. The yacht managed to break the record despite a problem that forced the crew to drop the mainsail and sale over the finish under jib alone.
