James Packard's Vintage Yacht For Sale

packard yacht
This beautiful old yacht has a long history. The Matthews yacht was custom built in 1903 as a day cruiser for James Packard, the car manufacturer. This flush-deck type motor yacht has dual cabins and was used by Mr. Packard on Chautauqua Lake, New York hosting guests including Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. It represents the great beginnings of wooden motor yachts and has white oak frames with white cedar planking and mahogany interior trim. The exterior hardware is brass and the running lights and spotlight which were manufactured prior to 1890 were once oil lamps which have been converted to electric. This yacht was designated as a U.S. Postal boat in the 1970s and was portrayed on a special stamp. The nearly 42-foot yacht is listed for $750,000.

The Struggle to Sell the Ring-Andersen

Last year when I wrote about the donation of the yacht Ring-Andersen to the Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation I mentioned that it might be sold in a couple of years to raise money. Looks like I was off a bit, the foundation is looking to sell the yacht before the two-year mark has been reached. They have made several attempts to sell the 59-year-old wooden sailing yacht, including listing it on eBay and having a live auction. But it is only those who stop trying that fail so the yacht is again up for auction. It will be back on eBay as of December 27. The auction ends January 6.

They are making luxury yachts out of all sorts of modern materials these days but the lure of a wood yacht persists. Few are more striking than the Ashena, a nearly 153-foot luxury tri-deck power yacht. Ashena was built in India and designed with the original owner Indian industrialist Gautam Singhania. The yacht took five years to build and as so often happens it is for sale just a couple of years after it was finished. The yacht has a Burmese teak hull. She accommodates 12 guests in six spacious staterooms. The yacht is for sale for 11,990,000 euros. Shots of the interior and a beautiful girl enjoying the elegant on deck hot tub after the jump.
