French Winery Tests The Market With Huge List Price

The French wine world is buzzing with the news of the listing of Chateau de Malle in Sauternes for an incredible 68 million euros. Decanter reports that the chateau appeared anonymously in the Financial Times last Saturday. The listing, by estate agency Maxwell Storrie Baynes, does not name the property and says that it "will furnish complete details upon the customary signing of confidentiality agreements." But the magic words "praised by the wine press including critics such as Robert Parker" helped wine watchers narrow it down. Decanter quotes an agent in the area who was apparently gobsmacked by the price calling it "completely crazy" taking into account the fact that aspiring winemakers often want properties in the marquee territories like St Emilion, Pomerol and cru classe Medoc rather than Sauternes.

Saturna Island Vineyards, Estate of the Day

There are some properties that just stick with me. This is one of them. I first wrote about the Saturna Island Winery back in 2006. The property is a vineyard on one of Vancouver's scenic Gulf Islands. The 78-acre estate has a mature 62 acre vineyard, 10,000 sq.ft winery, wine shop, tasting room, and a licensed bistro. This unique winery can only be reached by boat or float plane. The winery grows Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and more on four separate vineyards. Although it is a young winery, they have already received many Canadian wine awards. Back in 2006, the property was listed at $6.5 million Canadian.

Fast forward to now and Saturna Island is back on the market. The name and brand, "Saturna Island Family Estate Winery," the equipment, furnishings and fixtures used in the operation of the vineyard and winery as well as the vineyard machinery and equipment with bottled and bulk wine inventory are included with in the sale. The winery can process up to 20,000 cases of wine per year. The property is also zoned to build a Vineyard Inn for overnight stays. The main home is on two acres and has four bedrooms. There is also a guest cottage and an infinity edge pool and hot tub which look out over the ocean. It is now listed at $15 million.

Jepson Winery For Sale

Filed under: Wine, Real Estate Developments

Small Califonria winery Jepson Winery north of Hopland in Mendocino County is back on the market. The Press-Deomocrat reports that the listing comes less than three years after the winery was acquired by an investment group that planned to create high-end estates on the 1,200-acre property. Facing a softening real estate market and tough building restrictions, the investment group opted to sell rather than pursue the project.

The property includes a turn key operating winery (which also has a special permit to distill and produce brandy and vodka) and a custom crush facility with 121 acres planted to vineyard under contract consisting of 12 different varietals plus an additional 100 acres plantable. The building also includes a winery building with a permit for 44,000 cases, tasting room, Victorian office/residence, guest house, shop, storage barn, pond and those other 1,000+ acres which can be developed as real estate. The property is listed at $10.5 million with NorCal Vineyards.

Whiskey Run Creek Winery For Sale

Some people finally go for the dream of owning their own winery but don't get to enjoy it for very long. Such is the case with retired executive director of Omaha's Metro Area Transit Robert Curttright, Jr. who spent his very short retirement planning and creating the Whiskey Run Creek winery outside Brownville, Nebraska before he succumbed to cancer. Now the small winery is on sale for just $1.6 million. The winery is on 3.8 acres, and includes a 100-year-old barn, a 5,400 square-foot steel production building, a 100-year-old brick cave, a wishing well and a waterfall. The winery can produce up to 10,000 gallons of wine per year and there are around 60 vines of Chardonel and Chambourcin on a quarter acre just outside the barn. Eight miles away is another Curttright property which is 122 acres and includes a house and machine shed. This property is on the market for an asking price of $650,000.

Villa Poggio Torselli, Estate of the Day

Now as far as I know Angelina and Brad aren't rumored to buy this Italian villa and winery, but if they are in the market for a European villa and winery as has been reported before, Villa Poggio Torselli should be on their list. This property in the area of the San Casciano Hills near Florence has it all: beauty, expanse and quite the pedigree, it has been the property of some of the most famous patrician families in Tuscany including Macchiavelli, Corsini, Strozzi and Orlandini, who owned the villa until 1722. No wonder this is a national monument. The landscape is planted with olive groves, vineyards and cypresses. The estate is also a functioning agricultural business producing several types of wine, olive oil and honey.

The villa itself features frescoed decorations of the seasons echoing the gifts of the seasons shown in the elaborate ornamental gardens surrounding the villa. It's one of the more expensive properties we have seen but I'd take this over some of the more monumental homes in the States any day. It is listed at $86,846,000 by the Katzen Group. After the jump, your most extravagant Tuscan fantasy come to life.

Phelan Vineyard, Estate of the Day

I never get tired of the winery in Napa fantasy. I've been to wine industry events and learned just a smidgen of what is involved in the making of wine (it's hard work involving everything from backbreaking labor to sophisticated chemistry). Still, the dream persists. If you've got the bug, and deeper pockets than mine, perhaps this place in Napa could be your baby. It's a small vineyard (over 18 acres, seven planted with Cabernet grapes) but one that has produced 90+ point rated wines. The estate includes a 3000 square foot wine cave, a winery permit for 4800 gallons, an offsite tasting room at the co-op in Downtown Napa, and a permit for crushing on site. There is also a four-bedroom home on the property. The Phelan Winery has been selling their boutique Cabernet Sauvignon with the classic copper label for $85 a bottle. The winery is listed at $7.9 million. After the jump, one very cool wine cave.

Castello di Borghese Winery For Sale

Another chance to own your own vineyard and live the winemaking dream. Marco and Ann Marie Borghese have put the Castello di Borghese winery on sale for $9.2 million. The 85-acre vineyard and winery are located on the  North Fork of Long Island. They bought the estate in 1999 when it was Hargrave Vineyards for around $4 million. The Borgheses have increased production capacity and renovated the public rooms and offices. They aren't in a great hurry to sell but they have already had offers. The winery makes Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and also hosts Wine Camp, an immersion experience in the creation of wine.
