Sommelier Cellar, A Private Sale Wine Site For The U.K.

Fresh on the heels of the announcement of Lot 18 here in the U.S., the UK gets its own private sales club for wine. SommelierCellar is the UK's first online private sales club for wine and offers deals from the World's finest estates. SommelierCellar offers its members private sales of fine wine at up to 50% off the original retail price. The wine will only be available for limited periods of time to its network of members. Joining up is free and there will be new sales each week.

The wine offers are selected by UK Best Sommeliers, Matt Wilkin and Andrea Briccarello and top wine writer, Chris Losh. The site will also include advice from the buying team including tasting notes and food pairing information. Wines, sold by the case of six bottles, will be offered for up to two weeks, or until the stocks have sold out. When a wine is selected by the buying team, members are notified via email. When the individual sale is over, that particular wine won't appear again. Once bought, the wines will be delivered to the members' home or office within 7 days.

To become a member of SommelierCellar, and benefit from exclusive fine wine sales visit www.sommeliercellar.com and register your details. Those signing up to be members before the end of November will receive a £10 voucher to be redeemed against their first purchase. Any member who introduces a friend will receive an additional £10 with no limit to the amount members can earn.

Fine Wine on Super-Sale?

wineIt seems with the decline in the economy came a rise in wine sales but only for bottles less than $35. The finer wines priced between $50 and $125 have struggled. Desperate to clear space for the new vintages that will be harvested and bottled soon, retailers are slashing prices on the good stuff. Which makes this an ideal time to stock-up on or sample the higher-end of the wine spectrum. For example, the 2003 Chateau de Valandraud from Bordeaux currently sells in NYC at Union Square Wines for $80 whereas three years ago it was selling for $250 per bottle. Many retailers are offering these discounts both in-store and online. Don't hesitate -- the sales may only last until the end of the month, before holiday shopping begins, and it's best to have an inside track through email lists. You can even get deals now and save them for holiday gifts!

Skip the Auction Houses, Take Wine Online

Vinfolio Marketplace is set to go live on July 1, 2009, solving a problem with which many wine collectors struggle. This online platform was designed to make it easier for collectors to put their bottles up for sale, creating a more fluid marketplace for this, um, fluid. Founder Aaron DeMello believes it could become the world's primary spot market for wine.

Currently, the wine sales platform has a virtual inventory – thanks to participants – of nearly 12 million bottles, with a value of approximately $2 billion. Most participants are located in North America. The market inventory will be supplied by more than 53,000 private wine cellars.

DeMello's goal is to create a place where buyers and sellers can come together easily to complete their transactions. The ancillary effect, of course, would be the real-time valuation of different wines, as you see in securities and commodities markets.
