$2.7 Million Patek Philippe Watch Stars in Christie's Sale

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Auctions

Patek Philippe single-button chronograph

An extremely important white gold Patek Philippe single-button chronograph from 1928, undoubtedly the only one of its kind, is expected to fetch up to $2.7 million at Christie's Important Watches sale in Geneva on May 16.

Created in 1928 on the eve of the stock market crash, the unique and complicated 1928 chronograph was a bespoke commission from one of Patek Philippe's most important patrons, though his exact identity is unknown.

The cushion-shaped wristwatch, with vertically positioned registers and Breguet numerals, is the only known example extant of a single-button chronograph by Patek Philippe made in white gold.

As such, it's perfectly possible that it could end up selling for more than $2.7 million, especially with the buoyant market for such horological masterpieces at the moment.

Girard-Perregaux 1966 Full Calendar In White Gold Watch

The only difference here from last year's 1966 Full Calendar watch is it being in 18k white gold for 2011. The new colors look sharp, but these are the only real changes. The 1966 Full Calendar watch from Girard-Perregaux gets a nice "tuxedo timepiece" demeanor with its white or black case matched to the white gold case (that is 40mm wide). I first wrote about this range here with a hands-on look at the palladium version. The elegant dial is easy to read and has an annual calendar and moon phase indicator thanks to the in-house made GP033M0 automatic movement. While the white dialed version has some nice blue accenting, the black dialed version tries to do this in red - but I don't like it. I think the "31" marker of the date should have been white. The red is distracting, and a splash of color has already been added to the dial via the gold moon and stars in the moon phase indicator. Still the watches are quite nice and the 1966 range from GP feels desirable as ever. Price will be in the $20,000 range.

Black Diamond Serpent Cufflinks by Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie for Asprey

Filed under: Jewelry, Charity, Men's Style, Celebrity Design

brad pitt and angelina jolie for asprey
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have designed an $11,000 pair of black diamond, emerald and white gold serpent cufflinks for famed London luxury goods house Asprey to benefit a children's charity. The luxe accessories are the first item for men in the Protector Collection, the line of limited edition fine jewels and silver objects created by the couple in collaboration with Asprey which my colleague Deirdre Woollard reported on last fall. The design of the Protector black diamond serpent links with 18k white gold bases and emerald eyes is based on Jolie's reflection on the serpent as an iconic guardian and cultural symbol of family protection, inspired by a ring she was given while pregnant with the couple's first child Shiloh in 2006. Each piece in Protector Collection is a limited edition, handcrafted at Asprey's London flagship store in New Bond Street. The black diamond serpent cufflinks match rings, earrings and a pendant in the women's collection. All proceeds from the Protector Collection pieces are being donated to the Education Partnership For Children of Conflict (EPCC). Co-founded by Jolie, the organization raises awareness and funds to educate child victims of war, conflict and natural disasters.

Dartz Unveils $1.5 Million Monaco Red Diamond Armored SUV

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Dartz Red Diamond
Back in October we first wrote about the $1.5 million Monaco Red Diamond Edition SUV concept from Russia's Dartz, billed as the world's most expensive, luxurious and strongest armored car. A controversy ensued over the kooky company's plan to use genuine whale penis leather for the interior, echoing the upholstery on Aristotle Onassis' famed yacht the Christina O. After Pamela Anderson protested the move, Dartz declared it would spare the whale's private parts. Now the company has finally unveiled the finished product at the Top Marques Monaco show. It features a matte black and ruby red paintjob, gold-plated bulletproof windows, 22′ Kremlin Red Star bulletproof wheels, tungsten and white gold gauges decorated with diamonds and rubies, an additional outside kevlar coating, and a custom Vertu mobile phone with a panic button. The interior is leather and vinyl made to look like whale skin. It also comes with three bottles of the world's most expensive vodka, RussoBaltique, another Dartz sideline adorned with yet more gold and diamonds.

iDiamonds for iPods

Looking for a way to add some bling to the signature ear buds that came with your iPod? An Italian company called Mac@Work has luxury iPod buds that are covered in white gold and adorned with diamonds. There are four designs available to choose from, including hearts, stars, crescents and lightening bolts. Prices for the diamond models start at 660€, but the hearts are a bit more. The company also has buds in the same designs, but made with pink sapphires instead of diamonds. The pink would probably be a better choice if you already have, say, a pink iPod case. The sapphire versions are 564€ each.
