Zafferano Esperienze Wine Glasses

Zafferano Esperienze glasses might redefine how wine is tasted. The glasses are designed with concentric ripples at their base, which increase the surface contact with the wine. When the wine is swirled in the glass, more aroma and flavor will be released than in an ordinary glass. Esperienze glasses come in different shapes for different types of wine, from dessert wines to aged reds, so a wine connoisseur could customize his collection based upon his or her favorites. According to the Rosengarten report, they can be ordered from Luigi Bormioli for $29.99 for four glasses, though they are not listed on the Bormioli website.

Tierce Wine

We already know the Finger Lakes region in New York is home to really good ice wine, now a new Riesling has been created to tempt wine consumers to check out the region. Tierce is a dry Riesling developed by three wineries: Anthony Road Wine Co., Fox Run Vineyards and Red Newt Wine Cellars. The wine will be officially released at Red Newt on May 5 as part of the Riesling Month celebration. Each of the winery contributed a third of their grapes. There will be 100 cases of the first batch and each winery will sell the wine. Thus far the winemakers haven't chosen a price for the Tierce 2004.

One World Wine

It's becoming a bit of a trend, wines from around the world, marketed under a single label. We recently saw this with Sauvignon Republic. A new brand from UK company Halewood International, One World will pull together worldwide wines at a lower price point than some of the options we have seen before. The brand will launch in April and will include  Orange Street Ruby Cabernet Merlot and Chenin Blanc from South Africa and Ocean Point Shiraz and Chardonnay from Australia. Orchard Boulevard from Argentina will come out later this year and other wines (probably with a similar naming scheme) may come out later. The inexpensive wines (under $10) are aimed young wine drinkers who are expanding their palates.

The World's Most Expensive White Wine

A record for the world's most expensive bottle of white wine has been set with a $90,000 1787 Sauternes from Château d'Yquem. Stephen Williams, Managing Director of Antique Wine Company said that the company has been "working for some time on this commission and the purchaser is a long standing customer of ours." The client is a U.S.-based wine collector and the wine was sold by a private collector in France. The bottle has been inspected and re-corked several times during the past century. The grapes were picked when George Washington became the first President of the U.S. and so the wine has value as a piece of history regardless over whether the wine itself has held up through time. Williams is taking no chances getting the wine to the client. He picked it up from France in his private plane and will fly it over to the U.S. to personally hand it to the new owner.

Wine Creation Via Computer

Would you trust the business of tasting wine to a computer? CNN has an article on how computer models may may help identify good wine and help winemakers create better vintages. Lorenz Biegler, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University has been working with industry scientists in Chile to create mathematical formulas that could automate the fermentation process. By figuring out how the yeast cell behaves they can determine how to replicate the process. The goal is to make winemaking more efficient and of course profitable. So far the research has been on white wines only. Reds are more complex and therefore difficult to analyze. Similar computerized systems are used at chemical plants, oil refineries and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities but winemaking has always been seen as more of an art of craft than a science. It doesn't seem like a computer is going to take the place of a master vinter anytime soon but technology may have a greater role in winemaking in the future.
