New Condos Up For Auction in Westchester County

Filed under: Auctions, Real Estate Developments

The Westchester County New York town of Ossining-on-Hudson is the site of the latest condo auction. Condominiums in the Orchid Condominiums will be auctioned off by Sheldon Good & Company on November 21 for prices starting at $175,000. There are a total of 23 luxury condominium homes in the recently-completed, four-story Orchid Condominium building in the heart of historic Ossining.
Eight residences will be sold subject to low minimum bids starting at just $175,000 for one-bedroom condominiums and $225,000 for two and three-bedroom designs. The homes were originally priced from $399,000 to $599,000. The original building was erected in 1938 by the Cambridge Instrument Company and has a red brick façade. Units have bamboo hardwood flooring and modern kitchens with contemporary cabinets in cherry-wood finish, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. Many residences also have spacious patios or terraces.

The auction will take place at the Crown Plaza White Plains located at 66 Hale Avenue, White Plains, New York. Interested buyers can view the available homes and furnished model residences during pre-auction Open Houses on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 2pm starting October 23rd and 24th and every weekend up until the November 21st auction.

"We initially looked to launch a conventional sales program earlier this year, but decided to finish the building first and sell all of the homes in one day through a competitive bidding auction event," notes Ricky Aryeh, a principal of Lionheart Enterprises, Ltd., the Orchid's developer.

Pound Ridge Golf Club: A Country Club Experience, For A Price

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Sports

The 15th hole at Pound Ridge Golf Club
When Pound Ridge Golf Club opened two years ago in the horsey precincts of northern Westchester County, New York, more than a few eyebrows (including mine) arched over its hefty green fee. Yes, the legendary Pete Dye had designed the course, and, sure, the steep and rocky terrain made for some dramatic shots. But at $235 for a round a golf--on a layout that in certain spots felt forced onto the land--Pound Ridge seemed like yet another example of big-city excess.

Finally, Pound Ridge's owner, Ken Wang, brother of Vera Wang, has lowered the weekday rate this year, to $155, provided golfers book at least five days in advance. (Discounts are also available for those who tee off after 3 p.m.) The club, just under an hour from Manhattan, has also partnered with several hotels, including the Mandarin Oriental in New York, where guests can arrange a round through the concierge.

All of which led me to pay Pound Ridge a second visit this spring. There are still a few holes that feel contrived, including the sandy par-three fourth; others, such as the par-five thirteenth, whose fairway is no wider than an Upper West Side brownstone, feel shoehorned in. But to my surprise and pleasure, I discovered that the course is walkable, and that the turf is maturing nicely. For the traveling businessman who seeks a country club experience but lacks private-club connections, or any other golfer with similar needs, I can think of few better options in the metro area.

Geithner Reduces Home's Listing Price, Rents It Out Instead

Even the Treasury Secretary is not immune to real estate woes. We reported back in March that after his move to Washington D.C., Timothy Geithner put his New York English Tudor style home on the market. A couple months later and no sale so Geithner has pared another $60,000 on the price, bringing it down to $1.575 million in the beginning of May. Geithner and his wife, Carole Sonnenfeld Geithner paid $1.602 million for the five-bedroom home back in 2004. The AP reports that agents Scott Stiefvater of Stiefvater Real Estate and Debbie Meiliken of Keller Williams Realty say the house was rented for $7,500 a month on May 21 giving Geithner a chance to wait until the real estate market rebounds a bit.

Leona Helmsley's $1.4 Million Eternal Resting Place

You may not be able to take it with you when you die, but you can sure spend a lot of it getting there. Leona Helmsley, who died this week in Connecticut, will be buried alongside her late husband, Harry, in a $1.4 million mausoleum in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Westchester County, New York.

Although Harry died in 1997, he is somewhat new to the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood. Three years ago, Leona became dissatisfied with Harry's original resting place at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx when a public mausoleum was constructed, blocking Harry's view. She then did what any self-respecting billionaire would do - she built a new mausoleum and moved Harry into it. The 1,300 square foot granite monument features Doric columns and a recreation of the Manhattan skyline in its stained-glass windows. Oh, and a great view.
