The historic Oak Bay Beach Hotel in Victoria, Canada is becoming the first combined luxury hotel and private residence in Victoria. The 100-room hotel will have 20 full-ownership suites that will open in the fall of 2010, just in time for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Walker Hospitality opened registration to buyers who may be interested. The Walkers plan to restore the hotel's luxury by including the lobby fireplace, Tudor facade and even the original Snug Pub beer mug. The development also calls for modern interior updates and a touch of green, the project is aiming for LEED Gold certification. The residential suites are penthouse and sub-penthouse units with views of the Pacific and the San Juan Islands. They range in size from 857 sq. ft. to 2,285 sq. ft. and prices start at $1 million.

Mega-Yacht Marina Planned For British Columbia

Filed under: Water, Real Estate Developments

British Columbia's waterfront condo market is booming but I hadn't considered that the ample waterfront space might also be a spot for luxury yachts. The Vancouver Sun reports on the proposed mega-yacht marina which is scheduled for Victoria in 2009. The planned $20-million, 48-berth marina at Songhees would attract larger yachts ranging from 65 to 140 feet long and is designed to offer a permanent place for these larger yachts. The marina will be located at the entrance to the Victoria Harbour and will consist of two symmetrical one-story buildings that will sit at either side of a 46-slip marina. The architecture of the buildings will mimic the look of a yacht setting out to sea, with sweeping bows, squared off sterns, and solid stainless steel rigging. From above, the view of the rooflines will look like a stylized yacht propeller. In addition to the Yacht Club facilities, the marina buildings will also include a public restaurant and lounge, the Harbour Heritage Coffee House, as well as a supplier of marine provisions and a yachting concierge marine management center.

Swanwick Ranch, Estate of the Day

Real estate in the States may be having tough times but in Canada things seem to be booming and we are seeing more amazing estates all over the country. This one in Metchosin in Greater Victoria, British Columbia is one of the most expensive. The home was finished in 2006 and sits on 67 acres. The design received a National Canadian Architect Award. The design is a mix on interior and outdoor design that includes pools of water which are part of a geothermal heating and air conditioning system that pulls water from the ocean and runs through the house. The water also divides the living and bedroom areas. The home is quite striking, if perhaps a bit chilly looking. I love the giant red sofas in the living room area. The estate includes a guest house, boat house, covered pool, and a tennis court. It is listed at $24 million Canadian.

SilkWind at West Shore

Some of the most architecturally interesting projects are coming out of Canada. SilkWind is a tower located in Victoria. So far Victoria hasn't attracted a lot of international interest from condo buyers, but this tower's cosmopolitan appeal may change that. Its 23 stories will be home to 150 condominiums. The building is triangular which matches the site shape, and the shape is also meant to mimic the prow of a ship. The suites' interiors have cherry or maple cabinetry, plasma fireplaces, marble and granite countertops and hardwood floors. Amenities include an exercise facility, infinity pool and resident lounge. There is also a 24-hour concierge service and a 152-stall bike storage area. The units range from 1,071 sq. ft. to 2,104 sq. ft. and will sell from the mid-$500,000's to $1.8-million.

Own the Real Haunted Mansion

Disney fans take note: the house that was the inspiration behind the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland is up for sale. The Harry Packer Mansion was built in 1874 and is in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, a town that is known for its appreciation of Victorian architecture. Despite appearances (and the fact that it is currently used to host Murder Mystery Weekends), the current owners assure prospective buyers that the interior "is anything but spooky," with high ceilings, Tiffany stained glass windows, marble fireplaces, period antiques and fabrics. The mansion is about 4,500-sq. ft. and is priced at $1.75 million.
