Handpainted Umbrellas for the Garden

One of the reasons I love working from home is the fact that I can step outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather whenever the mood strikes me, and you can bet my patio furniture sees plenty of use. To that end I would love to get one of these Handpainted Garden Umbrellas to sit under once the heat of July and August hits -- they're so artistic and beautiful in earthy tones of parchment, sage, and mahogany. And if you're into evening parties you can get them with a light up under the canopy. $1,599 - $1,999

World's Most Expensive Umbrella is $50,000

This past summer we wrote about the battle over Sardinia's famed Billionaire club, which some felt was overly ostentatious in these straitened times. The club's owner, playboy Formula One mogul Flavio Briatore, blasted the criticism, defending the rich's right to luxury. Obviously Briatore has the courage of his convictions; his ultra-high end men's clothing line, Billionaire Couture, has just come out with the world's most expensive umbrella.

Made entirely of crocodile skin, the ultra-luxe umbrella (above) is available by special order for $50,000 from Billionaire Couture's London boutique. The brand, which is worn by the likes of Paul McCartney, David Beckham and Sean "Diddy" Combs, is founded on "a relentless search for original details that express quality, sophistication and eccentricity [that] at times goes intentionally overboard." We'd say a $50,000 umbrella falls into that latter category.

Tuuci Razor Shade Platform

The summer sun is one of the best parts of the season, but unfortunately also one of the greatest hazards. Staying in the shade isn't always easy, but having a Tuuci Razor Shade Platform might make a difference. Some of the inspiration behind this design from Dougan Clarke came from the idea that sitting under an umbrella can sometimes be frustrating as the sun moves throughout the day and your area of shade gets smaller and smaller. But this tilted assymetrical canopy spins 360 degrees so you can easily keep comfortable all morning and afternoon, and it's built of sturdy materials intended to last through the weather. $1500.

Kate Spade Copenhagen Classic Umbrella

The weather this winter has been extreme, shifting from hot to freezing in just days and either bucketing rain, sleet and snow or remaining dust-dry. Those of use with the hot, dry weather didn't have much use for umbrellas over the past couple of weeks, but spring could still bring some showers, right? The bright colors of Kate Spade's Copenhagen Classic Umbrella make it a perfect choice for keeping those warmish, gentle rains away, though it is substantial enough to hold off a downpour, as well. Price: $95.

Deborah Lewis Cayman Bag, Handbag of the Day

Deborah Lewis's Cayman Bag is stylish and more functional than the average handbag because it has a discrete umbrella pocket on the side, which makes it the ideal spring bag if you live somewhere with unpredictable spring weather. At least, it's discrete until an umbrella is tucked inside it. The bag is made of leather and is accented with nickel hardware. There interior is nylon and has multiple pockets for phone, keys and wallet. There are three colors to choose from: kelly green, midnight black or chocolate brown. The umbrellas are available separately. Price: $438.

Shadescapes Umbrellas

This innovative umbrella is from Shadescapes which makes a whole line of sidepost umbrellas. The design allows the umbrella to fold vertically and you don't have to deal with a big post in the middle of your shade. It also can be tilted in a variety of ways to create just the right angle of shade. The 360-degree rotation means that the umbrella can easily follow the sun. It has an acrylic canopy and an aluminum mast. Prices start at $1,795.

Shady Lace Parasol

If your backyard is a bit low on foliage, this parasol from Conran can fill in with delicate shade you never have to prune. The parasol is cut in a pattern of foliage. The sunlight through the parasol casts shadows of branches and trees.   A gold colored bird sits on top.  The parasol plus stand sells for $840.

Rain Dot Umbrella

April showers bring... the need for a new umbrella. How can you worry about May flowers when your hair is getting wet? Umbrellas are a useful tool that we don't give much thought to until caught in a down-pour and I have never had good luck from the $10 variety peddled by street vendors, no matter that they promise it's a real (insert designer name here). This time, I'm planning in advance. I love this Brick Rain Dot Umbrella from the Seattle company Pare Umbrella. It is 3-feet in diameter when opened and has a gorgeous natural rattan hooked handle. Price: $56.
