Are Hotels Ditching the Bathtub?

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Services

When is the last time you took a bath in a hotel room? Not a shower, but a real down-in-the-tub bath? I appreciate a good soak as much as anybody, but with the busy schedules we all have, showers just make more sense. And when you're traveling, something most people don't have is all kinds of time to waste in the bathroom. The statistics agree, saying that for whatever reason, only 2% of people ever use the tub in hotels.

Now resorts are another story altogether, but I totally get why many hotels (the Hilton is one in particular) are looking at doing away with the bathtub altogether. What do you think, should high-end hotels continue to offer them just in case, or is it reasonable that they do away with them?

Thalassor Baleina Whirlpool Tub

Talk about a great way to relax -- just looking at this Thalassor Beleina Whirlpool Tub makes me feel a little less stressed. It must be the sweeping sculptural tub design, coupled with the raised faucet that makes the whole thing feel a little like you're sitting in a fountain. But most fountains don't have massage jets, hydrojets, and a chromotherapy system that offers 512 colors (that's ridiculous!) for an experience that is absolutely and completely tailored to exactly what you need. Can't get better than that!

Free-standing bath tubs seem to give the impression of elegance and indulgence because they are made using large quantities of expensive materials and almost always require a very large bathroom. The WS Bathcollection Orion Tub is no exception to these rules. Each tub is carefully hand-caved from natural stone, with a finishing polish or texture added that the end to ensure that each is not only unique, but that the tub looks its absolute best. Heart-Shaped Tub Romances Your Bathroom

Heart-shaped bathtubs aren't just for the Poconos anymore. You can add a two-person heart-shaped whirlpool bath to your own home. The tub has six jets total including two recessed Rotary Massage Jets for back and torso therapy. It sells for $2,265.90 and has options such as a decorative rim kit, comfort pillow and remote pump option. I would love to see how someone integrates this into their home.

Tired of being electrocuted every time you try to watch your soaps in the tub? Us too. So needless to say, we're pretty ecstatic that UK company Di Vapor is offering their new Luxor bathtub, a message-jet unit complete with 14" LCD screen (and digital ins, so you can flip to TiVO'd soaps during the commercials). Axor Massaud Faucet

Even in the largest bathrooms, space is often a priority. That's why this Hansgrohe faucet which is part of the Axor Massaud line is so appealing. The waterfall faucet does double duty as a shelf. The faucet base is designed by French designer Jean-Marie Massaud to resemble a gently curving blade of grass which contrasts against the geometrical shape of the shelf, forming a counterpoint to the fall of water below.

The Dutchtub

The Dutchtub looks a bit like a soup pot for people but it's actually a portable hot tub. The tub which is being introduced to the U.S. this week at the ICFF in New York is a plastic tub that requires no plumbing or electricity. Just fill it with water, put firewood in the bin and voila, instant hot tub. It can fit in the back of a large SUV, on a trailer or roof which means that you can have a soak in some pretty remote locations. It comes in six colors and costs 4450 euros.
