The $250,000 Ferragamo Crocodile Trench Coat

Remember the $150,000 crocodile peacoat from Hermès we wrote about last summer? Luxury Italian fashion house Salvatore Ferragamo has upped the ante considerably with a full length, double-breasted trench coat (above) made from the world's finest crocodile skin that costs an astounding $250,000. Available only by special order, the incredible matte black coat, handmade by artisans in Italy, features epaulettes, D-rings, forearm straps and a silk lining. Thomas Burberry is credited with inventing the trench coat in 1901; originally only British army officers were allowed to wear one. We're guessing this version was probably conceived of before the luxury goods market went to hell in an alligator handbag.

Fortier & Co. Body Armor

Sure your coat can keep you dry but can it take care of you in case of attack? Fortier & Co. provides soft body armor which can be worn more discreetly than traditional body armor. The ballistic fiber is ten times stronger than steel but lightweight. Fortier & Co. works with brands like Burberry, Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole and Columbia to create clothing that is stylish but secure. This Burberry double breasted trench has the classic check lining with zip-out wool warmer and over collar. It has integrated Twaron body armor and sells for $2,195 for the most basic level of protection.

Marc Jacob's Spring Trench

Is it just me, or does it seem like the fashion editors at a number of the major magazine suffer from some sort of collective amnesia? You know, some chronic forgetfulness that  has them declaring (as though it were some kind of big news) that trench coats are popular garments for spring.

Excuse me, but when did the trench coat ever go out of style? (The whole scenario reminds me of being at my high school prom. There was that point in the evening when the prom king and queen were about to be announced, and even though everyone in the audience knew exactly who it would be,  we all pretended to be shocked when we heard that the captain of the football team and the head cheerleader were elected once again.)

My complaints about fashion editors aside, this year's spring collections have once again proved my underlying theory: trench coats will be hip until the planet stops spinning.

Now if you're in the market for a trench that will last you until the trench goes out of style (read: the end times), I highly recommend this season's marc by marc jacobs gabardine jacket in natural. With a Peter Pan collar, classic round buttons and a floral liner, this double-breasted trench is as timeless as the trench itself.

Remember, fashion fans: 10,000 fashion editors can't be wrong (except when they are, as in the case of Alexander McQueen).
