A Victorinox Carry-On for All Seasons
Need a new carry-on? Probably a good idea now that airlines have begun charging for checked luggage. One model to consider is the hardsided carry-on from the venerable Swiss company Victorinox, founded in 1884 as a a supplier of knives to the Swiss army. The company's luggage (www.swissarmy.com) has the same high-end quality as those army knives.Dubbed the Werks Traveler Hardside, this carry-on is a best bet for business or casual travel. The standard 22-inch model weighs in at nine pounds. That's somewhat lighter than its competition but that is not what makes it so appealing. This two-wheel upright has a zipper that locks into place with a combination. As not every hotel room has a locked safe for passports, jewelry, and wallets, this feature gives you a secure place to store valuables. Another improvement over the usual fabric or soft-sided luggage is its highly sturdy exterior. If you could pack a bottle of Champagne between your sweaters it would probably withstand any hardscrabble treatment and arrive unbroken --- but with security issues at all airports you can't even test that premise. (No big bottles on carry-ons.) The bag's handle is engineered to rotate 360 degrees yet it also locks in place when needed. The handle system is designed to redistribute the weight to the bottom of the bag. In other words, it is an easy and comfortable roller. Although this particular carry-on from Victorinox does not have an extra zipper that opens to expand the suitcase a couple of inches, its top is engineered to be almost concave so you can stuff a lot into it. The bag is roomy enough for a careful packer to carry-on most of what he or she needs for at least a week or more. The Werks Traveler Hardside costs around $360 and is available in black and red at Macy's, Saks, Neimans and other department stores and online at ebags.com, luggage.com, and amazon.com among others.
