Bugs that Won't Bite: Handcarved Bamboo Insects

I'm not a bug enthusiast by any means, but there's something appealing about these bamboo insects. Maybe it's because they bring back memories from childhood (some good, some bad!), or it could just be that bugs are so inherently "creepy" and it's a rare occasion to get so close to one and see this kind of detail. Individually hand carved from "tiger print" bamboo they're each amazingly lifelike and detailed, and there's even a bamboo cage available if you're worried they might spark to life and fly away. Ranging in size from 2" (the cricket) to 7" (the praying mantis), there are 5 different designs available and prices range from $55-$65 each.

I remember the Slinky as being really fun and really frustrating at the same time -- you only got to play with it for a day or two before it got hopelessly tangled or the metal loops got bent and kinked. I do a lot of talking about personal flight options in the form of private jets and flying cars and the like but this takes personal flight to the extreme. For $250,000 you can get yourself a rocket belt. That's right, a Jetson-style jet pack custom-made for your weight and size. The service includes a fully-tested custom rocket belt, a machine to help you make your own rocket fuel, hands-on training including 10 flights in your own rocket belt and expert support. You probably can't use this to commute to work but you could always rent yourself out for promotional gigs and it is definitely a toy that all your friends won't have.

Santa On A Rocking Horse

It's a little bit late to start shopping for Christmas decorations for Monday, but this Santa On Rocking Horse is a beautiful decorative item with the look of an heirloom toy. Designed and handmade by artist Karen Didion, Santa is 25-in. high and is dressed in a plush outfit trimmed with real fur. This isn't the sort of thing that you want to give a child to play with, but it is something that you could get them as an "heirloom for future generations." Price: $1,600.

Uberreview Coolest Gadgets Guide

While only a few of the items are of note for their luxe status, it's a pretty good list none-the-less. Uberreview.com has posted a list of the "11 Coolest Toys on the Planet." Among them are a temporary tattoo gun, a remote-control flying Superman, and my favorite, Frigits. It's like Marble Madness for your fridge. The upper end of the price spectrum is reserved for Laser Bowling, a home arcade machine, and a pretty cool DNA kit (complete with hilarious caption), but The Blue Car appears nowhere on it.. I'll trade you three super high end scrabble pieces for some Frigits. Seriously.

Fitzsu Grand Prix

It's no wonder that the Playsam Streamliner is one of the most classic toy car designs. It's about as simple as you can get, which just means that so much more is left up to the imagination during play. But, perhaps to prove that imagination is not just the realm of children, the owners of the Los Angeles Fitzsu Society asked over 30 designers - including Michael Graves, Karin Rashid and Yves Behar - to put their own take onto the Streamliner. Each unique car is now being auctioned off (via eBay), in what has been dubbed the Fitzsu Grand Prix, to benefit the World Childhood Foundation.

$1.28M Golden Rocking Horse

For the kid who has it all, Japanese jewelry designer Ginza Tanaka has created a 24-karat gold rocking horse. The toy was designed in honor of the birthday of Japan's Prince Hisahito and weighs about 80-lbs, significantly heavier than the normal wooden rocking horse that it is styled after. The weight does have an advantage in that it allows the chair to rock much more smoothly than other types of horses. Although the jeweler is willing to take orders for more, only one has yet been made and is valued at $1.28 million.

You have a yacht for laidback cruising but what about the times you want to really get out in the weather and get your adrenaline going. That's where the Zodiac C27 comes in. The latest rigid-hull inflatable from Zodiac is designed for weekend warriors looking for a floating ATV. It is the consumer version of the Hurricane built by Zodiac. It has a deep-V fiberglass hull for slicing through water at high speeds. The boat has two V6 150 horsepower Evinrudes and zips along quickly. Pricing starts at $225,000 and Zodiac's website has a cool video of the boat powering through rough water at high speeds.

Naef Wooden Toys

Daddy*drama can always be counted on to find great, child-oriented (or parent-oriented) designs, from toys to clothing and everything in between. Unlike other such sites, they have a real penchant for design and not just the usual roster of plastic, kid-friendly products. For example, they listed these fantastic wooden toys by Naef that are designed to stretch the imagination without the help of any batteries.

The whole range is beautifully designed, with wooden puzzle pieces that can be rearranged to form myriad shapes. Many pieces are custom-designed for the Swiss company. The Bauhaus Bauspiel boat pictured above is a reproduction of an original model designed by Alma Siedhoff-Buscher in 1923.

Premium Model Engineering Miniature Cars

These gold and silver mini cars have been making the blog rounds lately. These little cuties from Premium Model Engineering are no Matchbox cars. These models of gold and silver with platinum and gold plating are the perfect desktop fidget to take the place of your real Mercedes or Jaguar when you are stuck in the office. The doors and hoods flip open. The models are made on a scale of 1:18 or 1:24 and come mounted on black marble in a special case. Each car takes 150 to 250 hours of work and is made from an individual mold. The car comes with a certificate of authenticity and a picture of the manufacturing process.

Modern Convenience Tuck n'Roll Indoor Skateboard

There were a surprising number of kids at the CA Boom show and they were all gathered in one place, at the Modern Convenience display. Their Recess Line includes a variety of swing sets, kid-sized furniture, and a padded vinyl swaying board known as the Jack Rocker. I loved these Tuck n'Roll upholstered Naugahyde skateboards. Designed for indoor use and bare feet it could be a lot of fun for those who have long hallways in their homes.
