Titanium Tricycle is Indestructable

Kids are notoriously rough on their toys and sometimes it's worth it to spend a little extra to get something that can stand up to the abuse. Outdoor toys like bikes not only take a beating from your kids but from the weather also, which is why some parents might opt to splurge on this titanium tricycle. Not only does it have a nearly indestructible and rust-proof titanium frame, but it also looks classy with its carbon seat and white leather saddle, plus bright white wheel rims.

Although I still prefer the traditional red tricycle this one does look pretty snazzy. $2,500

Donna Wilson Creatures are Cute and a Little Creepy

Cute? Yes. Cuddly? Yes. A little bizarre and screwy looking? Yes.

That's how I describe these stuffed animals from Donna Wilson, the collection being called simply "Donna Wilson Creatures." And 'creatures' is really the only way to describe this eclectic mix of plush creations which includes a snail named Stick, a dog named Oscar, and several mystery creatures named things like Stripey Head, Peeping Tom, and Angry Ginger. They look hand-drawn and unique, which I love, but most of them also have eyes that sit way too far apart, which I don't like (makes them look like they're missing a chromosome or something). Prices range from $84 to $164 each.

Bugs that Won't Bite: Handcarved Bamboo Insects

I'm not a bug enthusiast by any means, but there's something appealing about these bamboo insects. Maybe it's because they bring back memories from childhood (some good, some bad!), or it could just be that bugs are so inherently "creepy" and it's a rare occasion to get so close to one and see this kind of detail. Individually hand carved from "tiger print" bamboo they're each amazingly lifelike and detailed, and there's even a bamboo cage available if you're worried they might spark to life and fly away. Ranging in size from 2" (the cricket) to 7" (the praying mantis), there are 5 different designs available and prices range from $55-$65 each.

Noah's Ark Collectible Toy

The story of Noah's Ark is a timeless one that lends itself easily to children's toys and imagination with all the animals and the big boat (all kids love boats!). This collectible Noah's Ark from Links of London is hand crafted of mahogany and maple with sterling silver accents, and comes complete with a name plate that be engraved to truly personalize it. The Ark itself costs $880, with Noah and all the animal pairs available separately in sterling silver for $65 - $220 each. Whether you decide this is for play or for display is up to you, but it looks like fun either way.

Gold-Plated Slinky

I remember the Slinky as being really fun and really frustrating at the same time -- you only got to play with it for a day or two before it got hopelessly tangled or the metal loops got bent and kinked. But, kind of like Play Doh, the Slinky is one of those toys that has been around forever and practically every kid remembers having one.

But the Slinky fun doesn't have to be over just because you've grown up. If you're still a kid at heart, or know someone who is, this 14 karat gold plated Slinky is the perfect gift and conversation piece. Comes with it's own wooden box for safe storage, $69.

80th Anniversary Winnie-The-Pooh

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the publishing of A.A. Milne's children's classic, Winnie-the-Pooh, Steiff has released a limited edition, plush Pooh bear. The bear is the largest yet made by the company and is 32-in. tall. He is made with blonde mohair fur and wears a suede vest. The details are hand-sewn. Only 1,000 of the fully jointed bears were produced, making them highly collectible for Steiff fans, as well as for fans of the book. Price: $775.

And if you're going for Pooh bear, don't forget to pick up his buddies Eyeore ($315), Piglet ($235) and Tigger ($235), too!

BB2 Toy Caddy

The NY Times personal shopper pointed out that a toy caddy of some kind would be a good addition to a kids' room after Christmas so that there will be someplace to keep all of their holiday goodies. Shelves seem a little too functional to inspire kids to use them on their own, but the BB2 Toy Caddy they recommended nicely bridges the gap between toy and storage unit. Made of natural, finished wood and measuring 23" high x 15" wide, the caddy can be used as a chair or toy cart, which just might be enough to motivate child to use it for storage, rather than just leaving everything for you to put away. But if that's a little too optimistic, at least you're getting a cute, multi-tasking piece of furniture in the bargain. Price: $250.

Santa On A Rocking Horse

It's a little bit late to start shopping for Christmas decorations for Monday, but this Santa On Rocking Horse is a beautiful decorative item with the look of an heirloom toy. Designed and handmade by artist Karen Didion, Santa is 25-in. high and is dressed in a plush outfit trimmed with real fur. This isn't the sort of thing that you want to give a child to play with, but it is something that you could get them as an "heirloom for future generations." Price: $1,600.

Handmade Wooden Advent Calendar

Last year I picked up one of Starbuck's truffle-filled advent calendars, but I usually get my daily holiday chocolate fix from one of the inexpensive advents sold at Trader Joe's. Each day, you open up a little door on the calendar to reveal a chocolate treat and count down the days until Christmas. It's definitely not a luxury item, but the little Swiss milk chocolates are satisfying all the same. More traditional advents don't necessarily have chocolates, but little figurines or toys instead, like this Handmade Wooden Advent Calendar from FAO Schwartz. Crafted in Germany, the calendar is solid wood and is of heirloom quality. Each numbered window reveals little figurines inside the hand-painted house. Granted - it's not chocolate, but it certainly is far more decorative and even at $1,125, it won't prevent you from spending $2 on one of the chocolate ones at TJ's.

Pet Sleigh Bed

Beds, whether they are for pets or not, are not really seasonal items, though it is hard to resist the appeal of a sleigh bed in the winter, when the very name manages to make it sound more romantic. This pet-sized sleigh bed has a powder coated brown iron frame and plush, hand-sewn cushions. The cushions are done in a machine-washable leopard print fabric and have concealed zippers, which prevents any fur from accidentally getting caught in the zipper's teeth. The beds are made-to-order and are available in three sizes: 10-lbs, 25-lbs and 50-lbs. Prices range from $220 to $450, depending on size.

Portable Ice Rink

What child wouldn't love to have an ice skating rink in the back yard? Hammacher Schlemmer has a 37-foot portable ice rink that can be set up anywhere and is perfect for practicing for winter sports or just skating for fun. The frame keeps the water in the rink even if the temperatures get too high to sustain the ice, ensuring it will be ready to go whenever the weather gets cold, and the rigid PVC at the bottom protects the rink from skate damage if the ice gets too thin.

If only I had had one of these to put in the yard growing up! Actually, it wouldn't have helped me to become a more accomplished figure skater because, portable though it is, it still needs to be below freezing to properly form the 2.5-inch thick ice layer and that is something you can't necessarily count on in most of California. Price: $700.

Toy-Washing Dishwasher

There seems to be no point at which appliances can be too specialized and Bosch must have been thinking about ways to appeal to various niche markets of dishwasher buyers when they hit up on this idea. The Lego Edition Bosch dishwasher was developed with the toy company and is the first dishwasher that is completely toy-safe. Toys, often made of relatively thin plastic, are too delicate for the heat of most wash cycles, but a cold cycle, even with soap, is not enough to kill any germs even when dirt is washed away. This model solves both problems with a special 40°C washing cycle that will not melt the toys, but is hot enough to kill any germs on them. It also comes with a special tray to hold smaller objects, like Lego bricks, to prevent them from falling during the wash cycle. Price: $1,136.

Fitzsu Grand Prix

It's no wonder that the Playsam Streamliner is one of the most classic toy car designs. It's about as simple as you can get, which just means that so much more is left up to the imagination during play. But, perhaps to prove that imagination is not just the realm of children, the owners of the Los Angeles Fitzsu Society asked over 30 designers - including Michael Graves, Karin Rashid and Yves Behar - to put their own take onto the Streamliner. Each unique car is now being auctioned off (via eBay), in what has been dubbed the Fitzsu Grand Prix, to benefit the World Childhood Foundation.

Plush Bentley

How old were you when you got your first car? This could be baby's first Bentley. From the Bentley Collection, the toy is just the thing to get a kid on the right road to appreciating a quality vehicle. Called Blower the Bentley, the soft and squeezable car has removable wheels for making "bedside repairs." We suspect that they could be used for other things, too, such as throwing at older siblings, though we recommend trying to keep Blower in one piece for a smoother ride. Price: £16.98 ($32).

$1.28M Golden Rocking Horse

For the kid who has it all, Japanese jewelry designer Ginza Tanaka has created a 24-karat gold rocking horse. The toy was designed in honor of the birthday of Japan's Prince Hisahito and weighs about 80-lbs, significantly heavier than the normal wooden rocking horse that it is styled after. The weight does have an advantage in that it allows the chair to rock much more smoothly than other types of horses. Although the jeweler is willing to take orders for more, only one has yet been made and is valued at $1.28 million.
