Marc by Marc Jacobs Army Handhack Bag

The Army Handhack ($298) is the newest line of bags by Marc Jacobs that proves itself to be functional and stylish. Given its size and that it can be worn as a tote or a backpack, the Handhack can be used is so many ways - as an overnight bag, a weekender, a daily bag, or even a baby bag.

This durable canvas bag boasts an extra roomy interior, three exterior flap pockets, and a large front zippered compartment that can be accessed on either side, easily fitting everything you need and then some. While canvas is easy to clean, I appreciate that the bottom of the bag is leather. It complements the overall look and once it gets a little dirty and worn, it will only add to the bag's character. The Handhack is accented with gold grommets, zippers and buckles while a cranberry stripe on the handles add a little dose of color.

Summer Totes from Young Artist-Designer

Francesca Joy's hand-painted canvas totes in megawatt primary colors are the must have this summer. Launched last February by artist Elise Francesca Fargnoli, the totes quickly became a cult item in Palm Beach. "My idea was to turn art into fashion," says Fargnoli. Her goal was to create a tote that looked bright and sunny, "something very original, but was also practical for the beach or the street." The bags are made in North Carolina and painted in the artist's studio in Pomfret, Connecticut. They are surprisingly practical and rugged. No worries if they catch a wave at the beach as the colors hold fast and don't chip.

It's not easy launching a new tote business that is for the most part "owned" by the big catalogs. As she had virtually no budget for PR, Fargnoli, who went to Pomfret and Mt. Holyoke, relied extensively on her "old boy" network which really came through for her. Next in her Francesca Joy ventures is a line of pillows and towels, more t-shirts, and of course, her signature summer season totes. Check out the website, www.francescajoypb.com for styles. You can place an order online at orders@francescajoypb.com or call 866-249-6768. Prices for the totes range from $80-$110.

Index of Happiness Tote

Index of Happiness Tote
This is the Index of Happiness Tote, designed by artist Donald Baechler and accessory designers Richard Lambertson and John Truex.

The tote, available only to American Express cardmembers (call 1-866-558-3072), takes a classic Lambertson Truex design and adds original artwork, one of this season's most delightful and exciting accessory trends.

This artwork from Donald Baechler goes to benefit the art of others; 15% of the purchase price of each bag will be donated to the Whitney Museum of American Art's Photography Program, Collection, and Special Exhibitions.

The bag is suede, trimmed in Italian leather, and accented with plaids that complement Baechler's work. The inside of the bag features a blue leather patch signed by all three design contributors personally, as well as additional artwork by Baechler. The bag can be yours for an even $1,000.

Kate Spade Store Opening Totes, Handbags of the Day

Kate Spade's "store opening totes" is a collection of 7 individually designed canvas tote bags created in commemoration of the opening of several new Kate Spade stores around the country. Each bag is available in a limited edition of only 50 and is not only designed in honor of its specific store's location (this "stop and smell the roses" bag is representative of its store's home in Portland, Oregon) but is also only available in that individual store for purchase. So if you're looking to have a collection of all 7 bags you better get ready for a cross-country travel spree.

This artificial crocodile design representing the Everglades in Florida is my favorite.

Loeffler Randall Calfskin Tote, Handbag of the Day

Loeffler Randall's Calfskin Tote comes in a beautiful shade of bright neutral, is of appropriately generous toting size, and is designed in a simple but still interesting shape in soft calfskin leather. Other features include my favorite of a flat base with metal feet (I always love it when I can set my bag down and not have it constantly tipping over), hidden pockets on the front and back where the seams criss-cross, and a golden nameplate on the inside along with two patent-trimmed patch pockets. $685
