Gucci's GG Twins Large Tote is pretty and feminine in a metallic and wintry shade of mauve in guccissima leather with matching trim. This is one of those totally useful and timeless bag designs that leans heavily on quality textured leather and little else in terms of decorations and eye-catching features. It does have double top handles with interlocking "G" ornaments where they connect, plus protective feet on the bottom and interesting folded-in top corners. Inside it closes with a snap and has several pockets for your PDA, cell phone, etc. $1,300

Marc Jacobs Carnaby Tote, Handbag of the Day

Sometimes only a big bold embellishment will do and Marc Jacobs makes having one fun but classy with his large Carnaby Tote from this year's resort collection. The stark contrast between ivory patent leather and black macrame takes backstage to the large and off-center starburst-like flower adornment made of conical gunmetal gray beads. Besides that the bag has short, double top handles and goldtone hardware, and inside it's fully lined and divided into double compartments with a center zip. A versatile and useful bag that will work in winter or summer. $1,595

Burberry Nylon Tote, Handbag of the Day

I have a personal penchant for bags that aren't made of leather (I know, call me crazy) and although this Burberry Nylon Tote has leather trim it makes it into the "my favorite casual day bags" group with ease. Available in six different colors, including several rich jewel tones and a couple spunky neutrals, it's a fairly basic tote design but with a little extra personality in the form of adjustable drawstring sides with extra long strings. It has double top handles, a zip-top closure, and of course the iconic Burberry checks are all over the interior lining along with one zip pocket. A steal at just $250.

Balenciaga Daim Alphabet Tote, Handbag of the Day

Balenciaga's Alphabet Tote ($1795) is a playful and colorful alternative to dark and subdued handbags that we'll be inundated with this season. A mix of suede and leather offer the backdrop to a vibrant assortment of letters, spelling out Balenciaga of course, and a candy colored red trim along the front panel extending to double khaki leather handles with olive leather adds a splash of complementing color.

The interior is roomy enough for work, running errands - and forgoing plastic bags - going to the gym, as an overnight bag or as carry-on. An unexpected metallic leather lining adds even more interest to an already shows stopper of a bag. Measurements: 15" x 14" x 7".

Bosch Lock-It Jacquard Tote, Handbag of the Day

It's great when a bag makes a statement and this Bosch Lock-it Jacquard Tote from Alexander McQueen is certainly one that does. Featuring a painting by religious artist Hieronymus Bosch on both sides this bag is bright, eye-catching, and sure to be a conversation starter. It has brown croc-print trim in the form of side panels, double rolled top handles, and a small leather tag in addition to a tiny designer-stamped padlock, a zip-top closure, and a vivid red lining with one interior pocket. All in all a bag that will only get better with age. $1,785

Bottega Veneta Large Lambskin Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

The Bottega Veneta Large Lambskin Shoulder Bag is a lovely big blue bag, marvelously executed and fabulously practical.

This roomy, Italian-made shoulder bag is built for comfort. It's made with ultra-light lambskin, which ensures it won't be too heavy even before you fill it, and the knotted shoulder strap is braided with malleable leather, soft against your shoulder and easy on your hand.

The bag is 21½"W X 12½"H X 12"D, lined in pretty grey suede, and has two center compartments, a cell phone pouch and an inside zip pocket. It closes with a magnetic snap at the top. We especially love the signature Intrecciato detail woven down the middle of the bag, and the way it gathers at the bottom. Tote bags have started to get so boring -- and this is just as big, with a lot more character.

Carla Mancini Tall Tote, Handbag of the Day

If you're looking to brighten up a dark fall and winter wardrobe look no further than the Tall Tote with Braided Handle and Tassle by Carla Mancini. From one of my favorite designers for comfy, versatile style this bag is a sort of tote-hobo hybrid with a tall squared-off body that slouches exaggeratedly in the center thanks to a narrow leather fold-over flap with extra large tassel detail. The bag is monochromatic in a soft shade off-white but is full of texture-rich stitching and buckle details to keep things interesting. A great "winter white" for the upcoming holiday season. $520

Burberry Plissé Leather Tote, Handbag of the Day

The Burberry Plissé Leather Tote is a very pretty bag with a lot more character than you usually see in either a tote or in the white family.

Throwing the descriptor "simple" out the door, this bag is lavish in its complexity and style. There's one big pleat in this luxurious plissé leather, artfully balanced with a low logo tag. Rivets trim the edges of this bowler shape, adding both sparkle and strength. What you can't see is the luxurious black lining, as well as the protective metal feet (goldtone, of course). The 13"W X 13½"H X 6½"D bag has multiple interior compartments, and the generous width ensures you won't run out of space.

This "Trench" colored bag is so supple, you'll probably spend as much time stroking and hugging it as carrying it. It will look classic with jeans and modern with your work clothes. This could easily be your go-to bag for the entire season.

Anya Hindmarch Junie Canvas Bow Tote, Handbag of the Day

The Anya Hindmarch Junie Canvas Bow Tote is adorable. Just look at it.

This friendly design is so smart and sweet, it calls forth images of Mary Tyler Moore skipping around her Minneapolis apartment, wondering if Rhoda's coming for a visit. We love the way the smattering of eyelets feminizes this durable canvas, we love the cute, almost nautical rope handle, and the signature bow basically seals the deal. This is one great tote bag.

The bag is 18"W X 12"H X 7½"D and features a practical brown cotton interior with pockets and a pen slot. You could use this for shopping or as a mom bag, or even for an overnight if you pack carefully. Personally, I'd use it for a picnic basket. I'd even buy a blanket to match.

Alaïa loves animal print, this time doing it up in black and shades of gray and white/off-white. Roomy, crisp, and casual, the Alaïa Animal-Print Calf Hair Tote is great for brightening up a fall wardrobe and bringing white into the winter season and beyond. The slouchy shape has no exterior adornments, dual fold-over flaps that look almost ruffled when they settle, and a single matching top handle. It's lined in pale pink leather and (strange for such a large bag) has no pockets whatsoever. It does, however, come with a coordinating detachable vanity mirror. $3,460

Fendi Roll Bag Tote, Handbag of the Day

Fendi mixes earthy natural vibes with contemporary graphic ones in the brown on brown flower print of this Roll Bag Tote. Zucca coated canvas houses the pretty floral inlay with incorporated Fendi logo, giving it a more substantial and luxurious feel than the average tote bag. Other than that it's pretty basic, featuring roomy 9" drop double top handles, no top closure to speak of (open), and a somewhat unexpected pop of color in the form of a mustard lined interior, complete with one zip pocket. One of my favorite totes in a long time, $1,010.

A spacious bag without feeling as though you're carrying a large duffel bag is heaven sent.

The Linked Hasu Tote from Anthropologie provides an extra roomy interior without compensating style. A pair of beaded lotuses serve as eye catching accents without overpowering the tote's understated feel.

Set in a deep grey leather, a color that's fitting for any season, features plaited double handles, scalloped edge, two interior pockets and a magnetic snap closure. Unfortunately, the Linked Hasu Tote is currently unavailable but check back again for re-stock. Dimensions: H 11.75" x W 11.75" x D 5.75".

This Double Handle Tote with Bow Tie from Carla Mancini is one of my all-time favorite day bags thanks to its versatile brown color and timeless, comfortable shape. Soft brown leather gets dressed up with thoughtful details like a large drawstring on the front pocket that ends in necktie-like bow and hefty leather stitches winding around the top rim, on each of the double rolled top handles, and on each side of the detachable shoulder strap. Other features include silvertone hardware, magnetic snap closure on the large exterior pocket, zippered top closure on the main compartment, and a fully lined interior with zip pocket, patch pocket, and the designer's logo. A beautiful "forever bag" you'll carry happily for years and years. $640

Reed Krakoff Boxer II Alligator Tote, Handbag of the Day

Krakoff beautifully combines sophistication and elegance in his Boxer II Tote. A simple silhouette is enhanced with luxurious sharkskin ($2,950) and alligator ($6,900) juxtaposed with conventional fabrics like duffle and flannel creating a unique and trendsetting handbag.

The Boxer II is adorned with straps around the opening in addition to straps hanging over the flap, which is fitting given that Krakoff says the Boxer II was "inspired by the idea of the wraps that boxers put around their wrists." With features like an inside front and back zip pockets, a center panel zip pocket and a front split pocket, and an all around roomy interior, the Boxer II is ideal for work, travel and of course as your everyday bag.

Lin Art Project Shopper, Handbag of the Day

The Lin Art Project Tote ($835) is not for the faint of heart. It's completely unique and unexpected, and goes against the trend of simple silhouettes with minimal adornments. But if you know anything about Lin Besser, designer behind Lin, her tote fits perfectly with her colorful, off-the-wall and quirky aesthetic. Check out her Spring/Summer 2010 collection here.

Made of leather, Lin's tote features a sequined and embroidered character with bright pink and purple bug eyes and three multi-colored teeth. It sort of reminds me of the children's toy – Ugly Dolls. The ones that look so strange that they actually become cute. If someone took the time to decorate an Ugly Doll I have a feeling it would like a lot like Lin's little quirky and scary character.

The interior is spacious and perfect for items that are thin (wallet, magazine, phone, ebook reader, etc). The Lin Art Project Tote is fully lined with a hidden magnetic snap as a closure, and gold accents on the handle. Measurements: 41 cm H x 35 cm W.
