Another Major Skyscraper Set To Rise In Toronto

Another big condo/hotel comes to Toronto (joining Trump and a whole host of other projects). This one involves a developer from Kazakhstan. The Toronto Star reports that the building at the corner of Yonge and Bloor will be known as 1 Bloor and the developer, Bazis International, has permission to start work on the $450 million project. The 80-story residential tower will include three floors of retail space followed by a hotel and then condos on top of that, the classic three-layer combo we have seen in buildings around the world. Toronto architect Roy Varacalli has created a multi-part tower, one part, curved, faces west and the other, straight-edged and square, faces east. The idea is to mirror the two facets of the city, its buttoned-up side and its playful side. Bazis International also created the Crystal Blu condos in Toronto. One Bloor is scheduled to be completed by 2011. Christopher Hume of the Toronto Star thinks the building may be bit too glitzy for Toronto but it is restrained compared to other designs we've seen for the area.

Edgemere Estate, Canada's Most Expensive House

A reader tipped us to this house a while back and now a Toronto Star article gives us a few more details on Canada's most expensive house. Edgemere Estate in Oakville is selling for $45 million Canadian (around $40,643,055 US).  The home on Lake Ontario offers 32,000 square feet of space.  The nine bedroom house was originally built in 1907 and also has a two-story guest cottage. Details include a spa area with sauna and therapy rooms, a 20-seat home theater, a children's playroom and 17 bathrooms.

How much will it really sell for? The article points out that last year former Microsoft Canada president Frank Clegg sold his waterfront house for around $25 million (he was asking $29 million) and prices in the millions are getting common in  the area. Still at $45 million this might be sitting on the market for a while. After all, Ballymema, which we profiled last year, is still on the market as is another Oakville estate we highlighted which was originally listed at $13.9 million and now sits listed at $12 million.

Toronto is ever the hot real estate market with new condos and residences coming online left and right. The newest one to hit the lot is One St. Thomas. This fantastic building is designed by the great Robert A.M. Stern in an Art Deco style that is very glamorous and functional. Many units enjoy terraces due to the ziggurat-style tapering of the upper floors. Residents will enjoy luxury amenities such as an indoor swimming pool with men's and women's locker and steam rooms, a paneled private dining room for large dinner parties, and a concierge, security, valet, and doorman to make your life all the more luxurious. The residences themselves feature fixtures by Waterworks, hardwood and marble flooring, and lovely fireplaces. This 29-story structure is in the heart of the most upscale area of Toronto, with shops like Hermes and Vuitton just around the corner.

The MAD Architectural Design Studio, based in Beijing, has won a contest for the right to build a 50-story condominium tower in a western suburb of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. They were chosen based on the integrity of their design, judged by a panel of architects, urban planners and design experts, as well as on a popular vote from some 6,000 of the city's residents.

550 Wellington West, Toronto

Looking for a Canadian getaway in the heart of one of North America's most vibrant cities. 550 Wellington West, in the heart of swank Toronto, is a new condo-slash-hotel development that is sure to be a draw with the well-heeled young adult set. With room service, housekeeping, and laundry services, it brings luxury hotel life home. The gym comes complete with personal trainers and the rooftop pool has a bar and lounge. It seems to me that this is condo building for people who spend all their time wishing they were at a "W" hotel. Yes, the interiors feature delightfully modern design from Cecconi Simone. And if you have guests but don't want them to crash at your perfect pad, send them to the adjacent hotel for similarly comfortable housing without the monthly payments.
