George Nelson Eye Clock

I'm usually pretty positive and like most of what I post on here, but I also get creeped out fairly easily and can honestly say this George Nelson Eye Clock design is not for me. I just don't need a large mechanical eye staring down at me while I'm trying to work, or relax and watch TV, or whatever. But designed in 1957 and reissued by Vitra, it's amazingly timeless (tacky pun intended!) in its appeal. Even if I'm not crazy about it I can appreciate the unique design and the fact that it really doesn't look like it was originally born 50 years ago. £196

Mazda Limited Edition Chronograph Watch

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Cars & Autos

Mazda has done watches before, but not quite like this one. Working with German watch maker Sinn Spezialuhren Frankfurt, Mazda is releasing a limited edition watch chronograph that was specifically designed and created for Mazda. Many features of the watch were inspired by and can also be found on Mazda vehicles, such as the rounded square theme found in the air intake, tail lights, and door handles, and the silicon rubber watch band shares its design with the tires on the Mazda Hakaze. It will be available in Europe in mid-August of this summer for about $2000.

WebTime Series Elite Watch

The Web Time Series Elite Watch is, in my opinion, probably more of a conversation piece than a convenient way to tell the time -- which you do by looking where the colored lines intersect with the numbered lines (the hour on the top, the minutes on the bottom). Available in Aqua (blue resin) or Satsuma (orange resin) it boasts Super 2035 inner workings, a 4 year battery, and a hidden butterfly clasp on the strap. I won't deny it looks awesome, though I think the frustration of using it may increase your risk for migraines (so use it at your own risk!). ¥16,800, $169.

Philippe Starck Cross Digi Watch

I've always liked Fossil watches, and this one is no exception. It's definitely not a design that will go with just anything, but this Phillip Starck Cross Digi watch is no doubt an eye catcher. The cross design displays the time vertically and the day and date horizontally, and the silicone strap is adjustable while remaining seamless with hidden control buttons for a minimalistic design. It's available in white, black, orange, and green with coordinating LCD screens.

For $125 I think it's a fun way to take the typical digital watch idea to a classier level.

ChronArte Clocks Bring Forth The Wacky

Filed under: Decor, Timepieces / Watches

I've seen plenty of watches that make telling time difficult in the name of precision but the ChronArte Quadro wall clock brings a similar idea to home decor. The watch uses colored textile bands which build up over time to form a colored face. After 12 hours when it is all colored in it changes back to a white square. The clock is radio-controlled and changes automatically from standard to daylight-saving time. It is in an aluminum frame that comes in various colors and finishes. Each once is produced in Switzerland and is a numbered piece. ChronArte also makes a the Canna, a wall with a liquid display of colored water and the Filo, a column clock which fills with color showing how the minutes and hours or days pass. The Quadro sells for around $4650.

Grand Station Clock

When last did you needed to check the time when you were a half-mile away from home? At that time, you might have simply looked at your watch, but if you had chosen to decorate with a Grand Station Clock, all you would have needed to do is look up. Just kidding. This massive clock, with its 59-inch face, is made of antiqued wrought iron and is purely decorative. Imagine what the ticking would sound like if it were actually hooked up! Price: $998.

Armani is one of the designers participating in the program and his newest addition to the Armani Red line is an Inspi(Red) Watch. Coach is another company promoting breast cancer awareness this month with the Coach Gallery Breast Cancer Watch. The watch casing is engraved with a breast cancer ribbon, as well. The watches will be available through the end of the year and $100 from each purchase will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Price: $398.

Ghost Clock

A play on a nineteenth century mantle clock, the Ghost Clock does not quite have the traditional, ornate carvings that characterize pieces from that era. Instead, it has the design etched in clear glass and suspended above the the clock mechanism. It is available in two sizes, small with chrome clockwork and large with brass clockwork. In both sizes, it retains a bit of that old-fashioned elegance with a modern twist. Price: $145

MB & F Horological Machine 1

The first watch from Max Büsser's new watch line is nothing short of spectacular. Büsser is famed for his work with Jaeger-LeCoultre and Harry Winston's timepiece division. The first timepiece from his new company, Maximilian Büsser and Friends, is the Horological Machine No. 1.

The dial on the right is for reading minutes and the left dial shows the hours. Both dials have mounted floating sapphire subdials. Straddling the distance between the two dials is a one-minute tourbillon. The mechanism involved is complex and the watch has 376 parts and 81 functional jewels. Because of the detail involved only 100 watches will be made in the next three years. The watch comes in white gold or rose gold, with a choice of silver-effect or dark gray dials. For an in-depth look at the mechanism check out Goldarths Review and for a beautiful photo set of the watch you have to see this one from Watching Horology.

This Is It Worldclock

Filed under: Decor, Timepieces / Watches

This is it is a design group in Canada that strives not only to create outstanding works, but to stick with the simple motto: "this is it." Their designs tend to speak for themselves. The Worldclock 2001 is an unusual clock that gives the time of 81 cities around the world simultaneously. The clock was limited to a production of 100 units, all of which are made of aluminum and are 3" deep and 48" across. A highly attractive piece, the clock would be an inspired addition to the home or office of a busy business person or traveler, someone who doesn't want to feel like they're missing out on what is happening elsewhere in the world. Price: $3,500. A less expensive, 20-in. version is due to be released in the near future.
