Ann Sacks' Sculptural Tiles

tiles
Changing out plain, old ceramic tiles in a boring color can have a dramatic effect on your kitchen, bathroom or fireplace. Creating interest while adding ambiance with sculptural elements can really punch up the volume in a space. I'm especially drawn to the effect produced by Ann Sacks' decorative tiles. Using a time-honored, Italian technique called sgraffito, which uses clay carved reliefs, each tile becomes a unique expression all on its own. Available in either 'Dahlia' or 'Nautilus', tiles can be purchased in groups of fifteen to create a mural for approximately $480 plus tax and shipping. Personally I'm taken with the Dahlia design in persimmon and the warm effect it would have in a kitchen or around a fireplace.

Remodeling? Consider $1,000,000 Diamond Floor Tiles

We've all heard stories when we were kids about far away kings and queens that were so rich they never went anywhere without having rose petals (or some other lavish item) sprinkled beneath their feet as they walked. But as much fun as it is to imagine living like that it's not something that really realistic, is it?

Pietra Firma
thinks it is, and for the perfectly realistic (*cough*) price of just $1,000,000 per square meter they offer floor tiles not made of roses but instead each featuring over 1000 genuine diamonds, along with thousands of insets of precious materials like mother of pearl, abalone, and black onyx.

So ... they are beautiful. I wonder how many square meters they've sold and to who?

Botanical Wall Tiles

Ceramic wall tiles by Heather Knight. I like them because they're bright pure white, and because I love three- dimensional art hanging up on the wall. Inspired by nature, Heather Knight creates each delicate design by hand and works pretty much exclusively in porcelain. These tiles are porcelain and are modeled after different plants like turf, hydrangea, and noni (top row) and magnolia, durian, and lichen (bottom row). I'm not crazy about them displayed in a grid pattern like this but I think a grouping of them would definitely be gorgeous on almost any wall. $895 for the collection of 6.

Casamood Argento Glazed Tile

Your kitchen should suit your tastes, whether you prefer a modern look or a rustic one, and the Casamood Argento Glazed Tiles are a combination of styles that is versatile enough to work well in many types of kitchens. The tiles are brick shaped, for a slightly country feel, but have an elegant sheen to them that is very contemporary. They could be used for a whole accent wall or just for smaller designs within a larger, plainer tiling arrangement. They are pictured here in silver with a textured finish, but the tiles also are available in gold.

Pampa Leather Tiles

pampa leather tilesOne of the difficulties of choosing flooring is that once you put it in you are stuck forever. Not so with the Pampa leather tiles from Artistic Tile. The large leather tiles are magnetized so that they can be applied over sheet metal without mortar, grout or adhesives. You can easily switch the floor or wall from the warm look of naturally fur-covered cowhide tile to a smooth leather tile for the warmer months. The 18" x 18" tiles are also treated for stain resistance making them a durable home decor option.

Mood Light Flat Tiles

It seems like we might run out of wall space before we run out of great things to decorate them with.

We have already heard about color-changing wall paint, but what about a color changing wall? Mood Light Flat Tiles conceal LED lights that can create a dazzling multi-colored display - or a soothing one - in your home. The red, blue and green color settings can be adjusted to create any color you can think of, and the unit comes with a remote control that allows you to define your own light pulses and patterns in addition to the preprogrammed patterns. The tiles are just under 3" thick, so using them will not cut dramatically into the amount of useable space in the room, and they combine almost seamlessly to cover large and small areas. Each 19.7"x19.7"2.8" tile is $629.

3D Flow Wallpaper

3D Flow Wallpaper is yet another way to add both texture and visual appeal to your walls. The paper is made from recycled paper products and comes in sets of one dozen 12"-square tiles, which can be applied to the wall using a standard adhesive. If you don't care for the neutral tone of the paper, simply paint it to your tastes with a water-based paint. The crescent shapes can be arranged in any patter you like, whether you prefer random patterns or neat rows of symmetrical shapes. When you get tired of the design, or find something you like more, simply recycle the existing tiles and start again. Price: $28.

Wood Deck Tiles

For most of us, stability is the single most important factor when building a deck or, in the event you're house shopping, examining existing structures. After all, there is no sense in something that looks pretty if it is on the verge of collapse. A great solution is to build a basic, sturdy deck and dress it up. These Wood Deck Tiles give the appearance of a uniquely finished outdoor floor in a snap. The 18" square tiles are finished with a water-resistant chocolate stain and simply snap together. They come in sets of four, so you can cover an area as large or small as you like. Price: $99.

V2 3D Wallpaper

Wallpaper is the new... paint? Instead of leaving walls as solid colors, no matter how bright the color choices are, more and more people are opting to give their homes a further degree of interest with wallpaper. There are an almost unlimited number of patterns to choose from, but for a really unique look, textured paper is the way to go. MioCulture's V2 3D Wallpaper can give a room more than just the appearance of texture. The wallpaper comes in square "tiles" that are made out of 100% recycled paper. The pattern on the tiles extends 2.5-in. from the wall at its highest point and, by varying the tile positions, you can create a fantastic array of designs that will please the eye and "interact with space around you." Each tile is 12x12-in and they are sold in packages of 12 for $28.

Kohler's Water Tiles

Get the ultimate showering experience with Kohler's Water Tiles, which will allow you to direct water in any direction, from any space in the shower. Each tile has a shower head built into it, so you can have as many or as few shower heads as you want without losing any shower space to obtrusive plumbing fixtures. There are three different types of tiles, but all will allow you to wrap yourself in water. Two tiles are flush with the wall, featuring 22 and 54 individual nozzles. The third tile, also with 54-nozzles, is angled and allows you to direct the flow of water at a 45-degree angle to compliment the other tiles. The tiles start at $123.80 per tile and professional installation is recommended to ensure peak performance.
