Recycled Cassette Tape Neckties

Recycled Cassette Tape Neckties
Sonic fabric. That's the basis of these tie designs by Alyce Santoro. Sonic fabric is woven of 50% colored thread and 50% cassette tape, so if you were to run over one of these ties with a tape head you'd actually hear audible sounds. Garbled, jumbled sounds, but sounds nonetheless.

The ties are geared to New Yorkers as the audio tape is filled with recordings from on and under the streets of NYC, but clearly they can be enjoyed by anyone as the ties themselves are very crisp and stylish (and how often will you be listening to them anyway). They come in several colors and 3 styles (narrow, medium, and wide) for $90-$140.

Hermes Tie Pattern Watches

Meeting with Hermes recently I asked them "why don't you put some of your iconic tie patterns on watch dials?" The person I was speaking with smiled and said "let me show you something." Apparently someone at Hermes had the same idea. What timing... Even though Hermes has been making watches for a while, it seems like this idea is recent for them.

I was shown a handful of limited edition high-end watches with what I believe are enamel dials. Hermes is known for creating repeating patterns using graphical images as opposed to mere abstract shaped. They do this so well, that the majority of their men's ties have such patterns on them. Most men with any taste have at least one Hermes tie in their collection given their charm and popularity. Finally, these great designs are finding there way to watches dials. If successful, this experiment should lead to more permanent watches like this.

The patterns needed to be enlarged a bit. No point in having the design be so small that you can't see what you are looking at. So Hermes wisely places a few of the major shapes in the watches, but you get the idea of how well they work as a repeating pattern. Give Hermes' equestrian origins, the first of these watches all have horse head patterns. The above watch is placed in an Hermes men's Arceau watch case and has small, repeating horse heads in various blue tones. Click below to "READ MORE" and you can see two more watch in Hermes men's Cape Cod cases that have larger, more distinct horse head patterns. I understand that each is taken from actual Hermes ties. These luxury watches are likely in gold, and highly limited. Priced accordingly, and available in very limited quantities soon.

G-Cut Creates a New Look For Ties

g cut tie

What's old – and in this case, Native American – is new again, with the obligatory twist. Take a bolo tie, substitute an actual tie and a fitted metal ornament, and you've got the G-Tie. Designed by G-Cut's Gabor Norman, this is not to be confused with a clip-on or any such frippery, since you still have to actually tie the tie. The G-Tie is the sterling silver piece that clips on over the knot and might be everything you've ever wanted to say about wearing a cravat.

The G-Tie comes in two sizes, regular and skinny, and four finishes, shiny, brushed, charcoal, and bronze. Nor will they damage your Italian silks, having been designed to painlessly clasp the knot, not puncture it. G-Ties range from $75 to $135, and bowtie wearers can join in on this one as well: there's a G-Bow on the way.

Miss Feeney's Candy Cane Tie

Filed under: Apparel, Holiday Guides, Men's Style

It's time for the annual reappearance of the Christmas tie, the holiday standard often seen at holiday parties and around the office this time of year. Miss Feeney's Finery takes this tradition and adds a little fun. The brand has a whole line of silk ties that are formal on the outside but flip over to reveal a vintage pinup illustration on the inside. Their Candy Cane tie features a pin-up girl dressed as Santa's helper. The crimson Candy Cane tie sells for $85. Check out their whole line of ties and a fedora or two on the Miss Feeney's website.

Hugh Simms Handmade Patchwork Neckties

Hugh Simms is an L.A. based designer with degrees from Cornell and Fashion School F.I.D.M., where he first developed what he describes as his "Ivy League Grit" style. Passionate about supporting the American way and the Los Angeles manufacturing revival, all of his Handmade Patchwork Neckties are made in a small workshop in the heart of L.A. and each pattern, full of details, has significance and meaning. In the photo above Simms is wearing "Lost Library," which takes its inspiration from dusty broken-spined books filled with a paradox of both intelligence and toughness.

Thomas Pink iPod Commuter Tie

Filed under: Apparel, Gadgets, Men's Style

thomas pink ipod tieLVMH-owned London shirtmakers and haberdashers Thomas Pink have updated the iPod Commuter Tie for their upcoming Autumn Winter 2009/2010 collection.

Described as "a sophisticated 100% silk woven tie and useful mp3 storage device in one," the natty neckwear features a small pocket on the reverse of the tie designed to perfectly fit the new iPod Nano as well as other smaller mp3 players.

The music player is placed in the tie pocket to avoid having expensive devices on display or damaging the line of one's suit, while an extra fabric loop keeps wires (including headphone wires) out of sight and close to the body, leaving the hands free.

The new Commuter tie is available in eight colors - gray, charcoal, purple, blue, green, orange, red and deep pink - and will be available from Thomas Pink stores from September 2009 or online at www.thomaspink.com, priced at $100.

Vittorio J Ties for Bespoke

Vittorio J for Michael Andrews BespokeVittorio J is an NYC fine tie designer who has created an exclusive, limited collection for the Michael Andrews Bespoke store on the Lower East Side.

The Bespoke collection is made entirely by hand in New York - rare indeed! - with 100% English printed silk which reportedly comes from the same high-end fabric houses used by Kiton and E. Marinella. The ties are retailing for $69.

We find the designs playful and eye-catching without being over-the-top, perfect for the gentleman with a whimsical streak. The set of ties at right features tiny skulls and crossbones - a subtle rebellion.

If you like any of the ties in this gallery, you'd best call custom clothier Michael Andrews Bespoke today; no more than fifteen of each tie has been created.

Hlaska Ties Have a Secret Theme

Make a quiet statement of individuality with these men's ties from Hlaska. At first glance they appear to be fairly standard patterns and stripes, but look closer and you'll see a definite scientific influence, especially to do with the stars and solar system. Available in light to dark colors, you can be wearing stripes that double as strings of dna helixes or binary code, or even the rings of Saturn.

We'll leave it up to you whether you want to enjoy your somewhat geeky (said with all the love in the world) fashion statement in relative silence, or go pointing out the details to everyone in the office. $125

Cuff Links by Prince Charles

Prince Charles will soon be launching a luxury line of cuff links and ties. The new cuff links will be released in limited edition, made of silver and enamel in "arabesque" designs, and are scheduled for release later this month under the label Traditional Arts (which so far has only included houseware items). By the end of the year the new goodies should be available here in the States and around the world. And don't worry, you're not paying to support royal amenities like fine china for afternoon tea -- all the profits go to charity.

Stefano Ricci Crystal Tie

Crystals are frequently added as accents on women's clothes and handbags, especially during the winter when dark colors need a bit of flash to dress them up. Designer Stefano Ricci decided to apply the same principle to some of his ties. He added swirls of tiny Swarovski crystals to this Italian Silk Formal Tie. It certainly will get some attention and won't fit in everywhere you might want to wear a tie, but it's the perfect choice if you want to get noticed. Price: $1,105.

Perspective Silk Ties

Designed by Sovereign Beck, a New York-based pair of designers, Perspective Ties are a lovely variation on a traditional striped tie. The ties come in navy and asphalt gray and feature cleverly spaced lines that create a horizon just in the center of the tie. The illusion is subtle, but somewhat mezmerizing, so don't be surprised if you catch someone staring at it - particularly if you're in a dull meeting. It is 100% silk. Price: $90.

Robert Parker Wine Tie

If you are an oenophile, you are doubtlessly familiar with the name of Robert Parker. If you are a Parker fan now you can tell the world with a special Parker-themed tie that includes small images of wine glasses, bottles, grapes, the letters "RP100" (in honor of his famous 100 point wine selections) and his favorite bulldog. Parker's proceeds will go to benefit the Wine Advocate Fund for Philanthropy to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the AppleTree Institute. If you order from Capital Ties they throw in a snappy pair of Wine Advocate cufflinks. The tie sells for $65.

Marc Jacobs Tie Tasha, Handbag of the Day

Does a tie count as a bow? The Marc Jacobs Tie Tasha would be a rather ordinary bag, if not for the two giant leather flaps that make a loose bow over the bag's open top. The large handbag is made of soft black leather and is studded with golden brass studs, topped off with an edgy brass linked shoulder strap. The strap is connected with a trompe l'oeil signature push-lock closure at either end, and the top of the bag has slight ruching, making it appear to be less structured than it actually is. Inside, the bag features a contrasting leather lining in a green tone and has a zippered pocket. Price: $1,950.

Hermes Sailboat Tie

The yacht club and the beach aren't the only places that you can wear this new Hermes Sailboat Tie. It will look good just about anywhere. It is made of silk twill and comes in both blue and red, with elegant craftsmanship that will dress up a suit while impressing even small children with your remarkably good taste. Since the Hermès site allows you to virtually try on the tie with different shirts, it's clear that white, yellow and blue pinstripe are the best choices to complement the design. Price: $145.
