Hotels Upgrade Their Gadgets

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

It used to be that part of the fun of staying in a hotel room was extra conveniences and access to technology you may not have had at home, like pay-per-view cable. But now that Tivo and flat screens have become somewhat commonplace, going to a hotel room usually isn't so special as far as gadgets are concerned. And hotel chains haven't only lost their technological edge in terms of "special extras," but they're in real danger of actually falling behind and causing their customers to feel inconvenienced if they're unable to hook up their iPods or access wireless internet. Thankfully, many hotels are making aggressive efforts to upgrade their offerings, installing HD flat screen TVs, clocks with ports for music players, improved programming with more movie options, and other items. What are you most looking forward to?

Designers: It's Not Just About Clothes Anymore

Filed under: Gadgets, Luxury Cars & Autos, Wings

Who you are is largely communicated by your style, whether you like it or not. Whether you try, or don't try, either way says a great deal. And just what does "style" all include? Many major designers believe it's about more than just clothes and fashion, and are hoping to cash in on some of the other "angles" where their respective brand names can help somebody make a statement. After all, designers are all about style, and style is about a lot more than just fashion.

Specifically designers are branching out into technology and transportation -- and they're doing it in a big way. But then we wouldn't expect anything less from names like Prada and Versace, would we?

State-of-the-art touch screen cell-phones, sports cars, private jets, and even helicopters are just the beginning of this trend. So be on the lookout for more than just clothes bearing designer names and, of course, designer prices.

The $3,000 Mood Ring, er, Tube

The University of Tokyo and Japanese company GS Yuasa have come up with this little gadget called the SHOJI (Symbiotic Hosting Online Jog Instrument) which purportedly examines a whole host of physical analytics (light, temperature, humidity, infrared radiation and ultrasonic waves) as well as human variables (presence, movement and tone of voice) and translates that information into a row of LED lights that visually represent the overall 'mood' of the room. While this may prove more of a dorm-room gimmick a few years down the road, Tokyo companies are hoping to use this technology to monitor the atmosphere inside branch locations without actually installing Big Brother.

Thanks to our pals over at Engadget for the heads-up!

Wines 'Til Sold Out

For the most part, I've felt pretty much left out of the Woot phenomenon. I love a good deal and am a sucker for an impulse buy but a new gadget doesn't always light my fire. Woot has now launched Wine Woot where they offer a California wine per week at a deal price. But for more instant internet satisfaction check out Wines 'Til Sold Out which offers wines from around the world, one at a time for ridiculously tempting prices (30-70% off regular prices). The wine goes on sale at 12AM and each wine lasts only one day. If you purchase two or three bottles FedEx Ground shipping is free. Alas, FedEx only ships wine to 20 states. You can sign up for their newsletter to be alerted of each day's new deal and have a chance to buy it before it goes out of stock. Now if someone does this for purses, I'll really be in trouble.

iPod Jeans from Levis

We knew about the launch of the iPod Jeans from Levi Strauss a few months ago, but thanks to Engadget, we finally know what they look like. The jeans have an iPod docking link attached to a red ribbon wire that is hidden in a side pocket, and a small control unit is built into a higher, hip-height pocket, offering the only real advantage over simply putting your iPod into a pocket of jeans you already own. A retractable - and hopefully detachable - headphone unit is included. Each pair is said to be €199.99 ( $257), but our guess is that you'll have to pay extra for dry cleaning and other special treatment, since these are probably no washing machine friendly.

Plasma TVs Replace Diamonds as Girl's Best Friend

Seventy-seven percent of women surveyed by Oxygen TV would rather have a plasma TV than a diamond necklace. Obviously, they didn't ask any of our readers, did they? The survey, cleverly titled Girls Gone Wired surveyed women about technology, and showed that ladies aren't as inept as the stereotype would have us believe. Just under half do their own computer tech support, and women own about as many electronics as men. Granted, the survey only polled women from 15 to 49, so Grandma probably doesn't know HDMI from Firewire, but at least I can now stop trying to dumb down my technology talks to Mom.

iBar

While the iBar isn't something that many people are likely to have installed in their homes, it may just be the next big design trend for upscale eateries and nightclubs. iBar is an interactive surface system on which any visual content can be projected, including still images and videos. More interesting than that is the fact that the surface uses an intelligent tracking system to digitally keep track of objects on the bar and their position and movements can be tracked with colored lights. The virtual objects can even be interacted with, which would give bar patrons yet another way to entertain themselves.

Grado Statement Series GS1000 Headphones

We have lots of tiny headphones on Luxist because for many things, smaller seems better. This logic does not apply to everything, however, since some things are better when they're bigger, like limos, diamonds and estates. And in this case, headphones are better when they 're bigger, too. The Grado Statement Series GS1000 Headphones have nearly unbeatable sound quality and are certainly at the top of the line for personal headphones. The wooden housing and foam cushioning makes the headphones light and comfortable, but also "creates a "room" for the ears to sit in," which enhances the sounds even further. These signature headphones are also one of the most expensive models on the market today priced at £650 ($1,187).

Swapsets

Swapsets are the perfect combination of fashion and function for a girl who needs to have her phone or mp3 player close to her at all times. Basically, earphones and headsets - which will work with many cell phones - clip onto a headband of your choice, making it look less like you're wearing a phone and more like you're making a fashion statement with a cute headband. You can mix and match to create combinations that match your outfit or your personality and, since the pieces are all sold separately as well as in packages, you won't run out of options easily. The headbands can be further adorned with beaded dangles.

Use the Swapshop to create your own starter combination in the colors and design that you like best. Prices start at $60.

Disguise Your Sound System with Audiovox

AR Home Decor, from Audiovox, is a line of various covers to camoflague your sound system. Unlike many stereo disguises, these do not take any form of rock or sculpture, meant to be used outdoors, but include clocks, books, vases and wall sconces. My favorite part of the line are the trunks that hold the sub-woofers, because having a large trunk in the room is a good deal more subtle than having a subwoofer. In all seriousness though, the majority of the designs are quite clever and, as long as they match the overall look of the room you want to use them in, can be a great addition to the home.

JetBlue to Offer Internet In-Flight

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

JetBlue Airways, which offers discounted fares but lots of appealing perks, has just won a 1 megahertz wireless license from the FCC with a bid of $7 million. This means that the company will be able to offer wireless air-ground internet access, which it plans to do shortly, and other on-board communication services to fliers. It has not yet been determined whether cellphone usage will be allowed any time soon, though it is possible under the new service package. In any event, opening up the option to work online will be a huge boon to business travelers.

Surfing the internet will also be a good choice for those traveling for pleasure. For example, instead of watching the in-flight film, you could be reading Luxist!

Anigmo Dimmers

This small piece of wall art is actually a light switch. Behind the charming little plate is the Anigmo dimmer. The Anigmo is activated by a wave off your hand. One wave turns it on, hold to dim and wave again to turn it off. The dimmer has is sensitive so that only objects an inch from the decorator wall plate and about the size of a hand will trigger it. The wall plate can be anything that is stone, wood, rubber, glass or ceramic and up to 3/4 of an inch thick. The unit sells for $225 and the plates are $75 each.
