Wally Supercar Concept for the Superyacht Set

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Luxury Cars & Autos

Monaco-based boatbuilder Wally, known for its avant-garde yacht designs, is responsible for some of the most eye-catching craft plying the waters. As we reported last year they also make some of the world's coolest high-performance skis. Now Matthew Hockham, an automotive design graduate of the UK's Coventry University, has come up with a Wally supercar concept inspired by both of the company's passions. Hockham's brief was to take Wally's distinctive design language and apply it to a suitably high-end and high-tech automotive concept. "The aim is to bring the essence of Wally onto the land and offer an exclusive user experience," he tells Car Body Design. Hockham's design uses Wally's trademark futuristic form language with sharp edges, black glass surfaces and hi-tech gray tones. The side profile was inspired by the lines of the stunning 118 WallyPower yacht. The interior makes extensive use of carbon fiber and teak, two materials used widely by Wally, and the elongated chassis is especially designed to transport a pair of Wally carbon fiber skis.

New Ann Sacks Tiles By Michael S. Smith

ann sacks michael smith cosmatiAt the 2010 Kitchen and Bath Industry show in Chicago, the Ann Sacks brand introduced a range of beautiful new tile designs. The brand creates some of the most distinctive and innovative tiles around. The new range includes a variety of different styles. Particularly winning are the two new tile collections by designer, Michael S Smith. Smith was tapped by the Obamas to create the look for their family quarters at the White House. His Cosmati line features ten different patterns with names like Alexandria and Fez evoking exotic locales. The patterns uses a total of 86 different colored natural stones and have a timeless, luxurious quality. The designs were inspired by elements of Greek, Parisian and Moroccan antiquities. The dramatic lines and large scale graphics will probably appear in elegant hotel lobbies very soon.

Smith's Gilt line takes solid aim at the idea that bling is back, the beveled glass and hand-hammered precious metal bricks are offered in rose gold, antique gold, white gold or platinum leaf.

Designer Barbara Barry also has two new Ann Sacks lines: Starburst, embossed ceramic glazed tile designs inspired by "falling stars" and Frame which features glazed ceramic tile that incorporates raised and recessed edges.

Classic 1931 Gentleman's Yacht for Sale at $9 Million

1931 gentleman's yacht
Many people admired the classic 1936 sailing yacht restored by Italian watch brand Panerai that we wrote about last month. Now you can buy your own version, an even larger classic gentleman's yacht built buy the same famed Scottish boatyard as Panerai's craft, for $9 million. The 134-ft. Altair, a gaff rigged topsail schooner, was originally commissioned by Captain H. MacCaw who asked William Fife for "a sound, safe cruiser to go to the South Sea Islands in with no difficulty." She then passed through a series of notable owners including Viscount Runciman, a British Member of Parliament, before being acquired by the British Admiralty in World War II. Completely restored in 1987 and refitted in 2007, the teak on oak with teak deck Altair now ranks as one of the best-preserved large high-quality pre-war yachts in the world. The interior is considered one of the most beautiful and authentic of any classic yacht, with fine French polished walnut throughout the five cabin guest accommodations.

Diamond Teak's Eco-Elegant Designs

Filed under: Decor, Events, Celebrity Shopping, Green

The VIP tent at the annual Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge in the Hamptons is always quite a scene, but this year attendees noticed the space was particularly plush. That's because Diamond Teak, one of the key sponsors at this year's event, furnished the VIP area with heirloom-quality pieces from its Spirit Song Collection (above). The company was founded by two Harvard grads, Kevin and Christine Yardley, who volunteered with the World Teach Organization in Costa Rica. They conceived of Diamond Teak as a way of bringing an entrepreneurial spirit to protecting the environment and boosting the local economy there. They now have over 12 Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) / Smartwood certified plantations, protecting over 1.000 acres of jungle terrain. Diamond Teak is an end result of this process - the finest teak wood furniture from the best wood hand-selected by master crafts people. The company has accrued a broad range of high-profile clients, including Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, and Sarah Jessica Parker. The Spirit Song Collection's elegant curves mimic organic forms in nature, combining golden tropical hardwood with shimmering marine-grade stainless steel.

Gatzby Teak Furniture Set

More and more outdoor spaces are mimicking indoor spaces. Instead of a couple of patio chairs and perhaps a small table there are full suites that take the living room concept outdoors. Teak Warehouse has been distributing teak patio furniture in the United States for the past 20 years. The furniture is made from Indonesian teak and is kiln dried, and machine made using mortise and tennon construction with Sunbrella all-weather cushions. The set shown here is the Gatzby and individual pieces in the set start at $795.

Garden and outdoor company Smith & Hawken is offering, for a limited time, free shipping on its premium teak chaise collection when you order online. That's a savings of 11% of the final price of the item plus an additional savings of $50 per item for the chaises in this collection. This means you can buy an additional piece so the family's not fighting over who gets the teak chaise by the pool. The more you spend, the more you save!

I like the Saranac Chaise. Designed by Frederic Spector, it's fitted with a four-position backrest and three-way under-knee support. Wheels make it easy to move from lawn to poolside, and a pull-out tray holds snacks, beverages or reading material. Ecologically farmed teak will withstand rain, snow and sun. Check out the gallery below for the other Smith & Hawken teak chaises that qualify for the free shipping offer.

Thanks, GP, for this tip.

Spirit Song Bench

The Spirit Song Bench has a look that is even more beautiful than its name. Made of teak, it could coordinate with your new barbecue tools, but it is actually made to be eco-friendly (using durable, enviornmentally sound materials) and evoke the rippling of running water. Its unique look won the Design Excellence Award at the International Casual Furniture Show for designers Barbara and Robert Tiffany. There are two versions of the bench available, one straight and one curved. The curved bench is slightly larger and slightly more expensive, but the addition of the curved seat really adds to the flow of the bench in an appealing way. Price: $4,990.

Providence Outdoor Shower

Filed under: Decor, Yachts & Sailing

There is a growing popularity for salt-water pools, as I noticed while watching an episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County. Some people are interested in them for the beauty or the feel, perhaps even the slight smell of the sea, though the women on that show were interested in protecting their dyed hair color. Regardless of why you have one, you can't sit around covered in salt all day, so an outdoor shower is the perfect way to clean up and refresh yourself after a swim. The Providence Outdoor Shower is elegant, hand-built from sustainably harvested teak that will last for up to 25 years. It is a bit more upscale, in terms of appearance, than the Serpentine Outdoor Shower and makes a great patio accessory, especially if you already have some teak outdoor furniture. Price: $440.

Cook-N-Dine Dawson Teak Table

Working over a grill can take you away from guests at a backyard cookout, since heat and smoke are not generally what people want to gather around. Of course, if you have an electric cook-top built into your table, you avoid all the downsides of grilling, while everyone can pitch in and prepare delicious food together. The Cook-N-Dine tables, like this Dawson Teak Table, all have a stainless steel cooktop embedded in their center. During operation, the electric cooking surface on the table can heat up to temperatures of 430F and also sinks down slightly due to a patented process as it cooks the food. The outside of the table, the dining area, is completely unaffected by the cooking process. While Cook-N-Dine makes tables that are all metal, this table is one that is a modified version of a design by Ascot Teak. It comes in two heights, 30 and 40-inches, and is 59-inches in diameter. It can be used indoors as well as outdoors, so you'll be able to make the most of your table year round, not just during the summer grilling season. Prices (on sale) starts at $3922.

Richard Modern Birdhouse

This modern birdhouse is certainly a cut or two above the plywood, shop-class construction that has been attracting birds to the back corners of thousands of yards across the country for at least the last half century. The Richard Birdhouse is made out of sustainably harvested teak and is finished with a protective oil that will keep it looking pristine in any weather. The floating roof - which is actually attached with metal dowels - is a 1/4-inch thick aluminum plate. Most small birds can fit through the front entrance hole, but tossing a handful or two of seed inside to encourage them certainly couldn't hurt. Price: $195.
