Earth Day Special: Stunning Green Homes of the World

April 22 marks the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day celebration. To mark the event, we look at some modern, sustainably designed homes featured in the new book "New Green Homes" by Spanish architects Sergi Costa Duran, Ethel Baraona Pohl and Liliana Bollini and published by Collins Design. Each of the homes are specifically adapted to their climates using some of the latest energy-saving technology. They may conserve energy but there's no skimping on lifestyle. And the setting alone of many of these homes will drop a few jaws.

Karim Rashid's Corian House

We've seen designers work in Corian before, Zaha Hadid did a complete Corian kitchen a few years back, but blob-o-centric designer Karim Rashid has done a whole Corian house. The Smart-ologic Corian Living home will debut at i Saloni April 14-19 in Milan.

The concept home has a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room done in Corian styled in Rashid's colorful, curving shapes. Corian has gone green, new versions of the solid surface material made with environmentally sustainable, bio-sourced components and recycled materials will be displayed for the first time. DuPont has also created the Energain panels which help with energy consumption reduction as well as DuPont building integrated photovoltaic modules as part of the 'smart-ologic Corian® living' brand designed to showcase the company's efforts to decrease its environmental footprint.

Green Designers Win National Award for Mobile

Sustainable design company Contexture was recognized at this week's 2008 Design Exchange Awards for its handmade hanging mobile, As the Crow Flies, a dangling family of laser-cut crows.

Crafted from 30% post-recycled paper and found roadmaps, the mobile landed top honors in the Industrial Design category. It's also likely to be a popular gift among the I-don't-want-a-nursery-full-of-pink-puppies parenting set.

The mobile retails for just $49 (free shipping!) and is available through Contexture, the Vancouver-based partnership of Nathan Lee and Trevor Coghill, already well known for their reclaimed-material Coffee Cuffs and 45 iPod Cases.
