SushiSamba Joins The Bluefin Ban

bluefin tunaThe conference of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in Qatar ended earlier this week. The conference failed to ban the international trade in Atlantic bluefin tuna,a move that some fear could doom the endangered fish. Luckily many restaurants are taking it on themselves to stop using bluefin tuna without waiting for a ban. The SushiSamba restaurants have become the latest to remove bluefin tuna from all menus. The restaurant group's No Blue campaign supports the growing worldwide movement to protect the Bluefin Tuna. SushiSamba has pledged to work with its purveyors to establish a sustainable seafood program at all of its locations, moving toward eliminating all non-sustainable seafood from its menus. The No Blue campaign ban covers all bluefin tuna including Otoro Tuna and Chu Toro Tuna.

"SushiSamba's Managing Partners and I stand firmly in our decision to remove Bluefin Tuna from our menus nationwide, effective immediately. We are aware of the issues surrounding bluefin fishing methods and support the preservation of endangered species in our world," stated SushiSamba Corporate Chef Michael Cressotti. "I hope that other restaurants will follow in our footsteps to help protect this wonderful species. SushiSamba is currently in the process of working with our fish purveyors to establish a sustainable seafood program at all our locations."

The SushiSamba website (www.sushisamba.com) has a link for customers to sign a petition against harmful fishing practices that kill bluefin tuna. Rampant commercial fishing has reduced the mature Western Atlantic bluefin population by 80 percent since 1970 and the fish could be extinct in as few as ten years.

The Sushi Elite Tweetup

Taking the restaurant experience to a new level, the multi-city Latin fusion sushi empire SushiSamba is holding its first "Meet&Tweet" on January 20. This mojito- and sake- fueled evening will bring together the restaurant's Twitter followers to meet and eat -- and tweet -- in person. (Because nothing gets the fingers tapping like a TwitterRoll -- that's tuna, avocado, jalapeno, and fresh tomato salsita in rice paper, priced at $8). Those present will be encouraged to tap bite-sized messages about their bite-sized meal throughout the evening, using the hashtag #sstwtup. Which means those who aren't present can follow the action at the restaurant's Twitter account (@SUSHISAMBA). The menu includes salt and pepper squid, chilled Mediterranean mussels on the half shell, and lobster taquitos. In Las Vegas and Chicago, the event takes place 6:30 to 8:30 p.m, while in New York and Miami, the event runs from 8 to 10 p.m. More info is available at www.sushisamba.com.

Sugarcane Opens in Las Vegas

Sugarcane is the latest night club to open on the Las Vegas Strip. Sugarcane opened on Friday at the Palazzo Resort-Hotel-Casino. The club is located adjacent to SushiSamba's Las Vegas restaurant and will feature samba dancers, geishas, distinctive cocktails and over-the-top interior design. The 4,000 square foot club includes a stage, dance floor and DJ booth made of bamboo, smoked and frosted acrylic, resin and paper. Gold and chocolate brown leather cover wenge wood banquettes and the club's theme is displayed through 4,000 custom-made simulated "sugarcanes" which drop down from the ceiling and contain moving lights that wind through the tubes and rods. Brazilian graffiti artist Felipe Yung ("Flip") has also taken the spray paint can to various elements of Sugarcanes décor.

Continuing the Brazil meets Japan theme, entertainment will include exhibitions of capoeira, a Brazilian dance that incorporates martial arts, samba dancers, geishas, Japanese taiko drummers, models posing as Brazilian soccer players who will juggle soccer balls at the entrance and Sugarcane's in-house dancers. The cocktails also reflect the restaurant's Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian culinary roots with drinks such as the Parisian Geisha (vodka, sake, mint and lemongrass), the Figo (Montecristo spiced wine, fig liquor, pear juice and lime) and the Bushido or "Soul of Japan" (shochu, plum sake, muddled plum and daikon beer float). Sugarcane's Cocktail Tree ($70) showcases 12 different drinks (four samples of three different drinks), positioned within the branches of a wrought-iron, sculptural "tree." They also have a large sake collection and offer sake bottle service.
