The Standard Hotels and Quiksilver Collaborate on Special Edition Surf Gear

Filed under: Apparel, Luxury Travel & Hotels

Last summer Quiksilver and The Standard hotels paired up to create The Standard Boardshort by Quiksilver to celebrate "the bold attitudes and bright colors of the boardshort's golden era." At the same time Quiksilver announced it would be selling its bikinis in the bikini/boardshort vending machines at The Standard hotel. It's a new summer, and so here the two are again with a new announcement: 2010 sees four more custom boardshort creations, a new reversible bikini and a set of Standard Sunglasses by Quiksilver.

This year the designs weren't only a celebration of the past but of the present: the various colors and patterns are also connected to the aesthetics of The Standard's various locations. There will be 250 pieces of each, with The Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver running $75, The Standard Bikini by Quiksilver going for $88, and the Standard Sunglasses by Quiksilver retailing for $75. They'll be available in those vending machines and at The Standard online store.

Loews 5th Annual Surf Dog Competition Returns to San Diego

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Pets

surf dog

Loew's Coronado Bay Resort will be the site of the Surf Dog Competition on Saturday, May 22 from 11 am to 2 pm. After the canines have waxed their boards to perfection and adjusted their sunnies, they get ten minutes apiece to ride the waves and are judged on their top two runs. The judges are looking for confidence level and "overall ability to grip it and rip it," which is really hard to do with paws.

There's even a breakdown, American-Idol style, of which pooch to peep out: English Bulldog X Factor who can ride it all the way into shore, but who also wears a life jacket because he can't swim; a 10-pound Boston Terrier called The Underdog; and Jack Russell Terrier Buddy, the reigning champ who scored a perfect 10 last year. Celebrity spotters will want to watch out for the Great Dane Marmaduke – yes, that one, there to promote 20th Century Fox's coming movie by the same name.

Winning dogs will get "the ultimate pet vacation" at the resort. Proceeds from the event will benefit San Diego's police dogs.

Soto Retreats Combines Learning, Long Boards, Zip Lines, and Costa Rica

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Everyone is doing Costa Rica nowadays, and why shouldn't they? It's one of the few places with a jungle that's actually inviting, where you can color-coordinate your attire with black, brown and white sand beaches, and that isn't overrun with tourists even though, well, everyone is doing Costa Rica. Still, few are doing anything new when they do Costa Rica, and Soto Retreats has a few packages that will allow you to address that.

For more involvement with the locals, the Spanish and Surf program will initiate you to Latin American conjugations while you learn how to stand up on a longboard to catch three-meter waves. You'll stay in Jacó, which the locals call The City of Surf, and stay from one to four weeks doing ten to 20 Spanish lessons per week and getting in the water daily. Should that not be enough, you can swap out the Spanish lessons for plain old adventure, doling out your non-surfing hours between zip lining, white water rafting, ATV-ing and haunting jungle trails already haunted by scarlet macaws and white-faced monkeys.

Soto additionally offers an All Women Surf, Yoga and Spanish getaway for those times when men just aren't allowed. You'll still need to share the water with manly types, but the yoga classes take place on an open-air deck by the ocean, or in the shade of one of Costa Rica's active volcanoes. Soto takes care of everything once you step off the plane, and packages begin at $1,700 for a seven-day trip.

Last winter we wrote about the teak, titanium and carbon fiber skis made by timeless men's London luxury outfitters Alfred Dunhill. For summer the storied British brand has come out with a limited edition surfboard (above), decorated with a modern take on Dunhill's iconic Bulldog motif. Designed for Dunhill by the acclaimed European surfboard company Pukas in conjunction with surfing legend Jed Noll, the 9 ft. board is constructed from lightweight but high-density polyurethane foam with a superior resin-soaked fiberglass hard outer surface, minimizing drag on the waves. Only 10 of the exclusive boards will be offered for sale at the Alfred Dunhill flagships in London, Tokyo and Shanghai for about $3,000.

$20,000 Makaha Empress Wood Surfboard

New Zealander Roy Stewart has designed a $20,000 Makaha surfboard (above) made of 400 individually crafted pieces of empress wood. The handmade, limited edition surfboard is "museum quality", but designed to be used. The 12"9" Makaha is modeled on the olo boards once reserved for royalty among Polynesian natives. It's incredibly flexible and accelerates in the water aided by a Vort-X tunnel fin for serious performance and speed, yet, Stewart notes, it is "extremely forgiving and easy to ride, just as comfortable cruising small waves as it is racing large ones." The Makaha has a three-month lead time for delivery but includes a custom travel bag.

Rayskin Handmade Wooden Surfboards

The surfers out there know how much difference a good board can make, and Rayskin is targeting them with their line of handmade hollow wooden surfboards. More eco-friendly than typical foam boards, Rayskin's wooden creations are meticulously designed to be both elite collector's items as well as hydrodynamic high performance sports equipment. A wide a variety of exotic wood types are used, and each surfboard is a numbered one-of-a-kind (because they're handcrafted and unique) "work of rideable art." Pricing done individually upon request.

Endless Wave Table

Filed under: Decor, Yachts & Sailing

Being the peak of summer it's also the peak of surfing season in most places, and for those who love the sport and just can't seem to get enough the answer might be to bring a surfboard into the house with you in the form of a coffee table. The "Endless Wave" is a table made of a real surfboard perched on top of a wave-shaped pedestal. It does, perhaps a little surprisingly, come across looking very classy and stylish. There are several color options available (or they can custom color one for you) and two different styles to choose from -- the Malibu and the Waikiki. $1800

$15,000 Kenny Scharf Surfboard

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Art

I have never surfed in my life but if I was rich enough I might consider buying this $15,000 surfboard because it's just so pretty! It's part of a collection that is the result of a collaboration between designer Elie Tahara and artist Kenny Scharf. I love the yellow and red color combo (the collection also comes in a scheme of seafoam green and purple) and the pattern is an interesting mix of floral, science, and space objects. The Kenny Scharf collection is available now exclusively in Elie Tahari's boutiques in Soho and East Hampton New York.
