The Perfect Summer House Cleanup with Caldrea

Before one can enjoy one's summer house, there's often a fair amount of cleaning to do; sometimes it seems to take up most of the vacation. One way to alleviate some of the ennui of the task is to hire someone else to do it, of course; but you shouldn't overlook the therapeutic value of tackling the job yourself with the aid of great-smelling, eco-friendly products that are a pleasure to use. Caldrea, a company based in Minneapolis, MN,makes high quality, earth-friendly products in exclusive signature fragrances for all types of house cleaning. They use the finest plant-derived ingredients and essential oils to provide natural freshness and cleaning potency – no harsh chemicals, no harsh fragrances, and all products are biodegradable and not tested on animals. They've just introduced a new fragrance, Sandalwood Riceflower, though our favorite remains their original, Lavender Pine. They also now make cleaning tools and carry sets combining both. The company is currently holding a summer sale with all items marked 20% off.

Shelter Island, Estate of the Day

Newsday's Real LI led me to this summer retreat in Shelter Island, New York. This home sits on 3.6 acres and has six bedrooms. It has a great room, dining room, two wood burning fireplaces, elevator, central air conditioning, and a two-car garage. The interior is in need of major brightening up and updating but the grounds are phenomenal. The property includes a freshwater pond, tennis court and a long dock into the sound. A variety of terraces offer views and much needed shade on a hot day. It is listed at $4.9 million.

Tiffany Cottage, Estate of the Day

I love the classic summer homes of New England. The Tiffany Cottage in Isleboro, Maine is one of those grand summer cottages that were built in the early 1900s when people would settle in for a few months by the shore. This Dark Harbor estate was built in 1912 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The shingled home with white shutters sits on a 4.8-acre parcel of land with approximately 700 feet of shorefront and a sheltered dock. A porch faces the water and offers summer shade and the home is surrounded by perennial beds and lawns. There aren't too many interior listing pics but they reveal wood floors, brick fireplaces and wide windows opening to the outside. This home is listed at $4.75 million.

Cow Bay, Estate of the Day

This home is so stereotypically Martha's Vineyard you can practically smell the salt water. The new shingled home is in the Cow Bay area of Edgartown the main town on the small island off the coast of Cape Cod. You don't get ocean views with this one but you get water views of Sengekontacket Pond. The home also has access to private association beaches of Cow Bay on the eastern shore of Martha's Vineyard. The five-bedroom home is either very staged or decorated by someone with a keen love of the preppy. Check out the living room complete with model sailboat and the quilt with the nautical flags. There are also two master suites with private bathrooms. The home is on a little over two acres and has a heated inground pool. Pools surrounded by grass don't exactly light my fire but this is probably just a place to rinse off since you've got the ocean so nearby. It is listed at $6.5 million.

The Vacation Homes of the Stars

Very few celebrities have only one home -- owning multiple residences in locations around the world is key to keeping any sense of normalcy and routine in their lives. But although first homes are usually in cities like New York and LA to be close to work, where do celebrities like George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Oprah choose to buy vacation homes? Where do they go when it's entirely up to them and they want to relax?

Well for Clooney it's a waterfront villa in Lake Como, Italy, for Depp it's a 50 acre farmhouse in France, and Oprah prefers her ocean-front ranch in Santa Monica. Where would you live? Check out this list of celebrity summer homes and see who's taste is closest to your own.

Cove House, Estate of the Day

Cove House is a four-bedroom home, built in the 1950s which has been given an updated look. The home is located on picturesque Rockport Harbor in Maine. The estate has terraces and decks, a private office and two guest apartments with kitchens, baths and bedrooms. A winding path down to the shore leads to a deepwater dock, a float and 260 feet of shorefront. The main home has been highly remodeled but the exposed beams help give the home more of a rustic feel. It is listed at $5.6 million. After the jump, if only the boat came with it.
