$44 Million Yacht Tops Robb Report's 'Ultimate Gifts'

It seems that Robb Report, the glossy chronicle of the filthy rich, has come back down to Earth a bit after last year's offering of the world's most expensive Christmas present, a matching custom private jet and megayacht set costing $500 million. Each year the profligate publication features an Ultimate Gift Guide, a seasonal offering of over-the-top exclusives. This year's sybaritic selections top out at a measly $44 million, which gets the recipient Aquos Yachts' 164-ft. expedition superyacht Star Fish to be delivered in 2012 and a luxurious three-week, 10-person charter trip aboard her sister ship, the 148-ft. $3.5 Million Hyper-Sub: Powerboat Meets Submarine

After several years in the making, you may soon be able to finally get your hands on the world's first powerboat-submarine hybrid – if you've got $3.5 million to spare, that is. The James Bond-worthy Hyper-Sub from Marion HSPD (Hyper-Submersible Powerboat Design) is finally gearing up for production in time to capture the growing market for luxury submersibles that can be launched from one's superyacht. The latest oligarch's plaything is the first small craft built with the horsepower, sea-worthiness, and range to allow operation on the open ocean, which also functions as a self-charging, autonomous submarine. On the powerboat side, it's a heavy-duty, 31-ft. surface-cruiser with an enclosed cabin. Powered by twin 440 hp inboard diesels for a total output of 880 hp, the Hyper-Sub has a maximum surface speed of 40 knots and a maximum surface range of 500 miles. In dive mode the Hyper-Sub can plunge up to 250 feet, and offers umbilical SCUBA support. With seating for up to four passengers plus a pilot, the craft's 180-degree acrylic canopy provides panoramic undersea views. With an elegant woodgrain interior, leather seating, onboard GPS, auto-pilot and a satellite phone, it's also a pretty luxurious ride.

C-Quester 2 and C-Quester 3 Submersibles, Cuteness Under The Sea

Cute isn't usually a word you'd associate with submarines but the C-Quester 2 and C-Quester 3 submersibles from U-Boat Worx are like the Smart Car of the ocean. Superyacht Times reports that the new designs will be shown during the Monaco Yacht Show 2008. The two-person C-Quester 2 is designed to be a new toy for megayachts, while the three-person C-Quester 3 can be used by seaside hotels and resorts to offer guests a new experience. Each has a releasable safety buoy, air conditioning, underwater communication, altimeter, sonar, and optional video cameras and tracking systems. The electric C-Questers can dive up to a depth of 100 meters and run on a Lithium-Ion battery. The first C-Quester 3 will be launched at the end of this year with additional rollout scheduled for next spring. Drivers have to be trained as a submersible pilot before using.
