Flocks Pouf Stools

It's been a particularly cold day as I write this so these puffy wool Pouf Stools by Flocks couldn't be more appealing. Available in 3 sizes and a variety of rich earthy colors they're made using giant knitting needles that make for extra large loops of wool that you can sink down into. The inside the poufs are filled with polyester and have a 100% cotton lining, plus each Pouf Stool comes with a tag saying the flock and name of the sheep the wool came from. $1,020 - $10,980

Sella Bicycle Seat Stool (Good Luck Sitting On It)

Sometimes stuff just catches me a certain way and I can hardly stop laughing, and this Sella Bicycle Seat Stool is one of those items. Designed by Achille Castiglioni, it's really a very simple creation consisting of a black racing bike seat on a pink steel column and (get this) a rocking base.

I totally understand that in many ways furniture design is an art form and practical usability isn't always a top priority, but if you're going to call something a stool there's at least a slight implication that it could be sat on, if you were so inclined. But I'm afraid anybody trying to take a seat on this baby is simply cruisin' for a bruisin'. Oh well, it does look nice! £336.

Prismatic Table

Here's a piece of furniture for those who love geometric shapes and clean lines. The Prismatic Table's design is inspired by the art of origami, although instead of folding paper it's made by folding aluminum. It has three legs, a hexagon-shaped top, and the appearance of being in three pieces. It was originally created back in 1957 by Isamu Noguchi and has just recently been put into production. It is available from Vitra in either black or white, and goes for around £239.

Gregory Pouf Stool

The Gregory Pouf Stool is a transformer: at one moment it looks like a simple rug and then the next, at the pull of a button, it transforms into a stylish contemporary stool or table. By Gregory Lacoua, the movement was inspired by the thought of a needle pulling thread through a cloth under tension. It's upholstered in hardwearing wool, which gives it a a nice softness, and although it's suggested for a kid's room I don't think it looks childish necessarily -- I think it would look great in any room, depending on the rest of the decor.

One Shot.Mgx Stool

The ultimate in portable yet stylishly good looking furniture, the One Shot.Mgx stool provides both a handy place to sit and easy space-saving storage options. Patrick Jouin's design has both an energetic contemporary appeal and innovative approach. By simply pulling up or pushing down on the center the stool twists between seating element and storage-ready shapes, and I must say not many folding chairs look this good. Perfect for keeping a few in the closet to pull out for guests and get-togethers when you need some extra seats. $3,960

Mango Wood Turned Stool

The Mango Wood Turned Stool can serve many purposes, working equally well as a table, stool, or simply as an artistic element. Hand-turned on a lathe by artisans in Thailand, the unique beauty and character of the mango wood is left to show naturally by leaving the wood untreated, which means no two pieces are alike. I love it and think it's beautiful, although due its mix of natural energy and modern appeal working it into a room's decor would take a skilled vision I think. Its hand-crafted nature means measurements may vary slightly, but are generally 13"W x 18"H and it weighs about 25lbs. $368 from Gaiam.

Ferchland's Oakleaf Chair and Acorn Ottoman

An afternoon walk in a forest inspired Agnar Ferchland to create this beautiful Oakleaf Chair. Promising a unique sitting experience, the chair reflects the quality and craftsmanship of Danish design while evoking a warm contemporary feel. With a satin steel base, the chair can be special ordered in a rainbow of nature-inspired fabrics and leathers. At just over 48 inches tall by 34.4 inches wide, it fits nicely at home or in the conference room. Paired with the Acorn Stool, the forest moves inside, creating a stunning contemporary look without harming even one tree.

Noguchi Rocking Stool

We recently saw a Noguchi Table that had a beautiful, but simple, design that hinged on a carefully set up balancing system. The Noguchi Rocking Stool, which was designed in the mid 1940s around the same time as the table, uses another interesting balancing act. The kinetic stool was designed for children and moves with the user while it maintains an upright position. It is made of wood to "heirloom quality" specifications and has a polished metal frame. It measures just 14-in. across and 9.5-in. high. Price: $645.

Barstools Are The Best Seats In The House

In NYC, more and more restaurants are incorporating bar seating, whether to create a pleasant waiting area for diners or simply to add more seating options to allow them to cater to more casual eaters in addition to the prix fixe crowd. 2. Birillo bar stool designed by Joe Colombo has an extra-wide seat and extra-small backrest. It retails for around $2,800. Found at Centovini.
  3. Award-winning LEM Piston Stool from DWR, redone in silver calf leather. Retail is $700 each. found at Gilt.
  4. Super comfy and almost shabby chic, these stools have soft cushions and multiple footrests. Found at Boqueria.
  5. Designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, these red leather and chrome stools are exclusive to L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and other global Robuchon restaurants.

Zanzi Swing Stools

The Zanzi Swing Stools were designed by Raul Barbieri, who was clearly looking to do something a little more extraordinary than the usual stool design. These stools do not have a flat base and will "swing" as you rotate them, as opposed to remaining totally level. Each has a polymer set and a chromium-plated steel base with an engineering polymer supporting surface. They measure about 15" in diameter and can be adjusted in height from 19.25" to 25.25". A number of different color combinations, with an emphasis on bright, bold primary colors, are available. Price: $1,300 for two stools.

Mushroom Stool

Clearly inspired by the squat, rounded shape of a wild mushroom, the Mushroom Stool was actually designed back in 1961 to be entered into a design competition in Japan. It was only in the past few years that the product has come to the market commercially, perhaps reflecting a chance in consumer tastes. The stool is made out of mahogany plywood that has been bent into the sinuous, twisting final product. It would be a beautiful accent piece to add to a room in which the primary wood is also mahogany, highlighting a desk or coffee table. The designer notes that the stool itself can serve as the base of a table, with a glass sheet placed on top. Price: $550.

Ventura Backless Stool

The Ventura Backless Stool is sleek and modern, outfitted with a metallic colored fiberglass seat and stainless steel swivel base. It is available in twelve colors, so it can easily blend in to most contemporary homes. The shape is meant to cradle your body weight and, despite the fact that it is backless, comfortably support you in the same way as an ergonomic chair. The key selling point of the chair design, aside from its flashy look, is that this design was used for interviews on American Idol. Whether you want a chair because Ryan Seacrest sat in it is up to you, but a more appealing thought is that all your favorite contestants sat there, too. It's too bad that you don't get an Idol with the chair, but it's probably best that it hasn't been branded with the show's name or anything. Price: $79.
