Gustafsson & Sjögren Stockholm Watch

One of their loveliest creations, the Stockholm is the newest limited edition model from Swedish watch makers Gustafsson & Sjögren (GoS). It will be limited to just five pieces total. Four pieces will have rich mother-of-pearl dials and one model will have a blue lapis lazuli dial - each set in a 42mm wide steel case.

Dials epitomize the art and skill of the knife and watch maker's use of Damascus steel. The hour indicator ring, hands, subsidiary seconds hand, and crown are all in Damascus folded metal. The dial makes for a lovely presentation of this aesthetic, and is still very legible. Inside the watches are restored vintage movements, being manually wound Alpina 592R Swiss calibers. Over the dial is a sapphire crystal and each of the watches will be fitted to an alligator strap. For the lapis lazuli dialed model GoS will place a blue alligator strap. Overall these are finely makes pieces and quite rare - a fantastic example of "out of the box" thinking independent watch makers.

Crystal Cruises Offer Stieg-Larsson-Themed Outings

Fans of Stieg Larsson's thriller trilogy have increased the interest in traveling to Sweden. Larsson didn't live to see his massive success which includes selling over 46 million books worldwide and an upcoming Hollywood film of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" by director David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig. Crystal Cruises has announced a new Crystal Adventure, "Stieg Larsson's Stockholm."

Crystal's Larsson-focused shore excursion will take guests to the Stockholm island of Södermalm for a walking tour centered around his novels' content. This view will be offered on three summer Baltic voyages on Crystal Serenity: May 22-June 2's "Baltic Explorer"; June 2-13's "Regal Treasures"; and June 27-July 8's "Jewels of the Baltic."

All three itineraries include overnights in Stockholm, as well as visits to Estonia, St. Petersburg, Finland, Germany, and Copenhagen. The outing is an additional $118 per person, and includes additional panoramic Stockholm highlights. Gustafsson & Sjogren Stockholm Watch

Here are some prototype images of the watch that Swedish watch brand Gustafsson & Sjogren (GoS) wanted to make fromt he start. This will be what the upcoming "Stockholm" model watch will look like. Emphasizing the core strength of the brand's talent - Damascus steel (and heavy metal looks). With a Damascus steel out ring and hands, the face of the watch looks beautiful being mother-of-pearl. A single model with have a blue Lapis Lazuli dial. I am really impressed by how it came out even in rough pictures such as this. You can see GoS's signature subsidiary seconds hand that spins like a pinwheel. Damascus steel is once again uses for the watch crown (not in place yet here).

I am not 100% sure, but I think the brand is working on a new case - and that this model is just a prototype.

The Stockholm will be a very limited edition watch. There will be just 5 pieces. The movement is also very special and I don't think GoS was able to get very many of them. GoS acquired a batch of NOS (new old stock) Alpina 592R manually wound Swiss movement and modified them with a Damascus steel plate. While these images are preliminary, it looks like the Stockholm is really going to propel GoS to a new level when it is released in 2011.

NoKo Jeans Closes Stockholm Museum

The NoKo Jeans Museum is now closed.

Well, it's not really a museum – that's just what the company called its space at Vartoftagatan 47 in Stockholm ... but that's irrelevant. NoKo Jeans is now closed for good. For NoKo Jeans, just coming into existence was difficult, and the company never really got the traction it needed. It's relationship with Swedish department store PUB ended swiftly and badly, and now it's closed its other location.

The reason for all the difficulty is that NoKo Jeans are made exactly where you'd guess: North Korea. Sweden is one of the few western countries the only western country that maintains diplomatic relations with the isolated state, which made it easier for a Swedish country to get the venture off the ground.

If you still want a pair of the People's Jeans (as I do), you can still order them online. The museum may be gone, but you still can show your solidarity with the workers of the world.

Sleep In The Cockpit Of A 747

Usually you sleep on a plane because you are en route to a destination. But now you can sleep on a plane that is going nowhere. The Stockholm-Arlanda Airport is home to the Jumbo Hostel, the world's first jet to hostel conversion. The hostel is located in an old Boeing 747 which has been renovated to offer 25 rooms includes four inside the original engines that hang off the wings. The flight deck is a private suite and the plane's lounge area and cafe will remain open. The hostel opens on January 16 and a night will cost 110 euros for basic rooms while the cockpit suite will run you 500 euros.

Stockholm's Plans For An Airport City

While the economy has had a big impact on the global economic picture, that hasn't put an end to all ambitious airport projects. Stockholm Airport City which is currently being built in the Stockholm region is Sweden's big investment in the future of air travel. The airport project includes a 650-room hotel, meeting center, and offices. Currently the Stockholm-Arlanda Airport is Sweden's largest international airport, serving 18 million passengers every year. The airport city is hoped to increase conferences and events in Sweden and Scandinavia and over the course of the next ten years, 1.46 billion euros will be invested in the project. In 10-15 years once it is completed, Stockholm Airport City will employ 50,000 people. A new hotel from First hotels will hopen in 2011 and will feature permanent portraits of the Swedish Royals, including Crown Princess Victoria, shown at right, on its façade.

Hotels That Float

Botels -- also known as boat hotels -- are a unique way to stay waterside without the port-to-port stops of a cruise. Sure, the accommodations include a rocking-to-sleep sensation and the sound of lapping water but if you really wanted these features wouldn't you look for a full-service cruise instead? I'm not exactly sure what the big perks are for those that choose to stay at these botels but I included a myriad of pictures so you can come to your own conclusion. Whether you're stopping through Stockholm, Budapest or Prague these botels would certainly not be your run-of-the-mill lodging option.
