Ltd. Edition Glenfiddich Decanter by Steuben

In search of the ideal present for the Scotch lover on your list? Famed single malt distillery Glenfiddich has partnered with renowned luxury glassmaker Steuben to create an exclusive hand crafted whisky decanter (above) in a limited edition. Priced at $690 and available exclusively at the Steuben flagship store in New York, the bespoke decanter is a collaboration between Steuben's master craftsmen and Glenfiddich master distiller Brian Kinsman, representing more than a century's worth of artisanship, tradition and expertise. The Steuben hallmarks of flawless design and attention to detail are combined with filigreed decorative elements inspired by some of the rarest and most precious Glenfiddich expressions.

The elegant piece also features subtle design cues that reflect the storied history of the Glenfiddich distillery, est. 1876, including the famous stag head design and the signature of its founder William Grant. "Both Glenfiddich and Steuben share a dedication to craftsmanship that stretches back more than a hundred years," notes David Bitran, Glenfiddich Senior Brand Manager. "In that time, while the successes of both our companies have grown, the dedication to craftsmanship and quality has endured." "Much like Glenfiddich, this beautiful decanter is the result of hard work, the best materials and the finest craftsmanship," adds Robert Nachman, Vice President of Design and Marketing for Steuben.

Celebrate the 2009 World Series with Steuben Crystal Baseball Bats

Calling all Yankees and Phillies fans, check this out.

For the baseball enthusiast who is also a discerning collector Steuben adds a classic twist on memorabilia with their Major League Baseball Collection. The new Steuben design features a regulation size bat made of the finest pure crystal. This is the same design used for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award presented by Chevrolet, and given to Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Rays this year.

Both the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies bats are engraved with the teams logos. Even if your team didn't make it to the World Series this year, don't despair! The complete collection includes bats for each and every team in the American and National leagues. The regulation-size bats are retailing for $6,650 a 30% discount off the regular price of $9,500. The collection includes smaller bats as well as other pieces for the collector who wants a high quality engraved item at a lower price.

What might seem to be an unusual partnership is really a unique match between two American classics. All the pieces in the MLB collection are handcrafted by Steuben in their Corning, NY factory. Each piece is made by skilled artisans, carefully inspected and signed with a diamond-tipped pen. Any piece that is discovered to have imperfections is destroyed as there is no second best for Steuben or Major League Baseball.

Steuben: An American Classic

steuben glassSteuben Glass is a nominee for a Luxist Award for the best glassware category.

Since 1903, Steuben Glass has been made by hand at its Corning, New York factory. For more than fifty years, Steuben has been the choice of every White House incumbent to present as an official gift of state. In 1993, the Steuben Mobius Prism was presented by the President of the United States as a royal wedding gift to Japan's Crown Prince and Princess Hirohito.

Today, Steuben's state-of-the-art melting process ensures glass that is exceptionally pure and free of even the tiniest visual imperfections. Its skilled artisans work in teams around reheating ovens called glory holes, directed by a master "gaffer." Each gather of molten glass is carried from tank to glory hole, where it is formed "at the fire" with blowpipes, pontil rods, shears, calipers, and other tools little changed over centuries. Finished pieces are slowly cooled in annealing ovens, then cut, polished, and engraved by hand. Each example is minutely inspected before it is signed with a diamond-tipped pen. Imperfect items are destroyed as there are no seconds at Steuben.

Steuben's magnificent 6,100-square-foot flagship store at 667 Madison Avenue was launched to welcome the new millennium in 2000. The store occupies a three-level space in a neighborhood of luxury shops an area recently designated as Manhattan's Crystal District.

Steuben Glass Sold

In March I mentioned that Corning was planning to put its Steuben Glass division up for sale. Now it looks like the deal is done. USA Today reports that the luxury crystal company has been bought by a private equity company. Corning will continue to maintain a 19.9% equity stake and the company intends to continue operations in upstate New York. Steuben will be part of the Schottenstein Luxury Group portfolio. The Ohio-based Schottenstein Stores has stakes in American Eagle Outfitters, Retail Ventures, which is the parent of DSW, and other stores.

Steuben has lost $30 million over the last five years and in March Corning had said the would consider shutting the factory if they couldn't find a buyer. The employees at the Steuben factory will get the same salary and benefits under the new ownership. Steuben Glass is currently the only luxury lead crystal still handcrafted in the United States.

Steuben Glass Up For Sale

Luxury collectible glass company, Steuben Glass has been put up for sale by longtime owner Corning. Corning has owned the business since 1918 and Steuben is now the only maker of luxury lead crystal left that is still handcrafted in the United States. Unfortunately, the company, which creates a variety of special edition pieces including a most recent partnership with artist Kiki Smith, has been unprofitable for a decade, losing around $30 million over the last five years. Corning has said that the company will be unloaded this year even if they have to shut the company down. Steuben Glass generates around $25 million in annual revenue and employs 150 people. Another option Corning is considering is selling the brand name but keeping the factory in operation. A move that I think would be a shame since part of the prestige of Steuben is its heritage and tradition. Sadly the beautiful glass collectibles aren't considered fashionable and appeal mostly to an older generation. Steuben has tried to attract younger consumers through collaborations with high-profile designers such as Smith and Ted Muehling but so far that hasn't been enough to generate profitability.

The Kiki Smith Collection for Steuben Glass

Kiki Smith and Steuben Glass have come together in a collection of 5 beautiful glass creations for home. Inspired by her long-standing relationship with tattoos, Kiki Smith incorporated her own personal interpretation of classic tattoo symbols like snakes, butterflies, moths, stars, birds...

The collection includes this grand scale mouth-blown vase (shown, $60,000), plus 4 smaller sculptures that incorporate silver accents that double as jewelry -- i.e. there's a snake with three silver rings on its tail that can be removed and worn, and a cat playing with a silver flower that doubles as a brooch.

Dragon's Treasure Glass

I've swooned over the designs of Eric Hilton for Steuben glass before. One of his latest, Dragon's Treasure, looks a little like something you might find in a new age bookstore but the piece is meant to represent those who guard over valuable possessions. The hand-formed crystal dragon surrounds a treasure of 24K gold flakes embedding in a solid crystal sphere. You'll have to surrender a bit of your own gold to get it, the piece costs $5,000.

Steuben Everlasting Bouquet

Nothing says "I love you" like a big bouquet of roses - especially if you ask the florist's opinion before Valentine's Day. Instead of flowers with a relatively short shelf-life, Steuben's Everlasting Bouquet offers roses that will never stop blooming. Only 24 of the limited edition pieces have been created and all feature a pair of roses at the center of the multifaceted Steuben crystal. The crystal is cut in such away as to allow the roses to seem to multiply before your eyes as you gaze into it, as well. A small hidden compartment is included in the base. Price: $5,000..

Radiant Disc Table

Looking for a more unusual table that really makes a statement? This Radiant Disc Table from Steuben Glass is made of crystal and bronze, inspired by the "textures and organic forms of the ocean reef" according to designer Michele Oka Doner. The legs of the table are reminiscent of coral, projecting to the crystal surface of the table, which resembles a pool full of slight ripples. It would make a beautiful end table or, though it stands only 20.5" high, a stand for a lamp because the light would reflect off its surface so beautifully. Price: $23,000.

Zodiac Bowl

The Zodiac Bowl is part of the fall line from Steuben Glass. It was designed by David Dowler & Kiki Katahira and features engravings of the tweleve zodiac signs on its surfact. The 9-inch diameter bowl has a pedestal base and can be used as a centerpiece, as a vase for flowers or even as a serving dish, but whatever it is used for the beauty of the bowl itself will not go unremarked. Price: $2,500.
