Napa Valley School Benefit Offers Wine Lots For A Good Cause

casbah in the caveWe like the way they raise money in wine country. The 12th annual fundraiser for The Young School in Napa Valley's St. Helena includes silent and live auctions with a wine focus. This year's event takes place on Saturday, March 12 at Failla Winery.

The winery's elaborate caves make a dramatic setting for the evening, which is called Casbah in the Cave. The evening features a Moroccan feast by Alex's Catering as well as a classical Middle Eastern dance performance. There will be a wide selection of auction lots featuring splendid adventures and truly fine wines from a variety of local wineries including Abreu, Blackbird, Colgin, Robert Foley, Harlan, Ovid, Joseph Phelps, Shafer and Silver Oak. Many wineries such as Far Niente and Smith-Madrone are offering event lots and travel lots offer getaways to Portugal, Nantucket and more.

The Young School is a private non-profit non-denominational Montessori-derived program for children ages 6 through 12 years old/first-sixth grades. The name of the school is taken from two sisters named 'Young' who were well-known Sonoma teachers several decades ago. The first Young School was founded in their home in downtown Sonoma. In 1997 the school moved from its Sonoma location to St. Helena in the Napa Valley. It operates as a 'one-room schoolhouse' in quarters rented from a church in a residential neighborhood of St. Helena and has an enviable 12-1 student-teacher ratio.

Tickets are $100 per person in advance and available at the benefit website.

Just Imagine, School Fundraising Napa Style

They do fundraising a bit different in the small town of St. Helena in the Napa Valley. Just Imagine, the joint fundraiser which benefits all St. Helena public schools, takes place next Saturday September 26 at The Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena and features an evening of dinner, dancing and auctions for $150. The Just Imagine auction catalog includes live auction items like a trip to Bordeaux that features a lunch with Michel Rolland, a girl's poker night atop Spring Mountain at Erna Schein Winery and David Abreu's Macho Magnums (40 magnums of Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley's most famous names, all from the 2005 vintage, donated by David Abreu). Or how about a family food and gardening adventure from chef Michael Chiarello. The daylong family adventure will explore different aspects of foods we eat (farming, animal care, gardening or foraging), and will culminate in cooking with those foods.

You don't need to be at the event to purchase one-of-a-kind 'buy-a-spot lots,' that include a cocktail party for 50 hosted by Erle and Kristin Martin, an afternoon of hiking Mt. St. Helena, dining and wine tasting for 30 hosted by Spottswoode and Amici Vineyards, a holiday caroling event for 10 families hosted by Salvestrin Winery and the music teachers of St. Helena or a special showing of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory at The Cameo Cinema featuring Woodhouse Chocolate. Tickets vary depending on the adventure.

The Rock, Estate of the Day

This four-bedroom home in St. Helena, California is really named the Rock. In fact it will be a hard name to shake considering that it is displayed as part of the fireplace surround in the living room. The Rock is a truly dramatic home that gets a lot of its kick from a black, white and red decor scheme in many rooms. The home has a wine cellar, a theater, a bar area, dining room and great views of the surrounding countryside including a vineyard planted in Cabernet grapes. The decor stretches to the wacky at times, the flower-covered bathroom with the granite bathtub and the Murano glass chandelier defies description. And the red piano against a zebra print rug, against a black and white floor? My my. It is listed at $7.995 million.

Casi Cielo, Estate of the Day

A friend referred me to today's home which has the curious name of Casi Cielo, almost heaven. One has to wonder what exactly would make this place more heavenly. After all, you have two parcels of land for a total of 20 acres tucked into California wine country (St. Helena), it was designed by architect Sandy Walker and is built for luxury living. The home is also a smart house completely controlled by a Crestron system. The home has views over the valley and only has three bedrooms but is laid out for entertaining with plenty of wet bar areas, onyx counters and expansive indoor and outdoor seating. Tennis courts and an infinity pool contribute to the playtime vibe. It is listed at $8.5 million. After the jump, a huge wine cellar and bar areas prove that this is a home made for partying.
