Chopard Happy Sport La Vie En Rose Watches

Chopard expands on its Happy Diamond Sport collection with a summer offering called the Happy Sport La Vie En Rose. The famous Edith Piaf song lends itself to these timepieces that have silhouette style roses on the dials - with or without diamonds. Perhaps this is also an unofficial watch from Chopard to its fans in France.

The 36mm wide watches are in steel or 18k rose gold (or steel with an 18k rose gold bezel). The loveliest models have rose colored sapphires set in the bezel - as well as diamonds mixed into the decor on the dial. Like all Happy Diamond watches, a few floating diamonds are sandwiched between two sapphire crystals and move around freely over the dial. The collection has a few dial styles and straps to choose from, presumably all in tones that will match rose colors. The entire Happy Sport La Vie En Rose collection will be limited to about 525 pieces total. Inside the watches are Swiss quartz movements. Look for them soon.

DeWitt Academia Quantième Perpetuel Sport Watch

"Sport" and "perpetual calendar" (they use the french "Quantième Perpetuel") usually aren't terms you hear in the same sentence when discussing high-end mechanical watches. But to be ballsy, that is what DeWitt did with the Academia Quantieme Perpetuel Sport watch. The amazingly loud design of the case and dial is sporty and bold. Certainly not for everyone, a good amount of people will appreciate the architectural complication that the design offers.

The watch isn't new, but this red bathed version is. Logically this watch should not look good. If you explained the concept of it to someone on paper, you'd be describing a mess. Though it does in fact seem to be greater than the sum of its parts. It comes across as cool - certainly more so that the original Academia Quantieme Perpetuel watch.

Ebel Classic Sport Chrono Khaki Green Watch

Ebel Classic Sport Chrono Khaki Green Watch
Movado-Group-owned Ebel will release this pretty nice looking Classic Sport Chrono watch soon. Positioned as a more affordable model, the Classic Sport Chrono will contain a Swiss ETA quartz chronograph movement as opposed to a mechanical chronograph movement. Seen here is a delightful white and khaki green version, but I anticipate the collection to come in other colors as well in the future. The steel case has that Ebel Classic Hexagon shape, and is 41mm for this model. The watch has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 50 meters. The dial is complex and attractive, but does not detract from the legibility. The strap is rubber with vertical striping in green - which is matched by a green chronograph seconds hand. Not sure on pricing, but I anticipate under $1000.

Tesla Roadster Sports Car: Drives Like A Charm

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Video

The last time I drove a car with this level of performance I couldn't hear myself think. The people at Tesla would probably have frowned at my driving style on off-highway roads during this specific part of my ride – but it isn't my fault they decided to design a sports car to house their all electric engine.

I'm zipping to over 60 mph in what feels like an instant. The Roadster Sport I am guiding doesn't feel phased by its rapid acceleration as many combustion engines do. The quick little car does 0 to 60 in under four seconds (3.7 seconds for the Roadster sport), but getting there is made more pleasurable by what it has under all the carbon fiber. Electric motors have some interesting benefits, it seems. Press down on the "Go" pedal (no gas here), and you'll get 100% of the horsepower and torque right away. There is no lag or waiting to gain RPMs. Going forward fast is only a matter of waiting for the actual mass of the car to gain speed. I suddenly feel like I am driving a life size electric toy car. In a sense, that is exactly what it is. And this toy is fun.

Louis Erard Héritage Sport Chrono Automatic Watch

Louis Erard Héritage Sport Chrono Automatic Watch

Tasteful and conservative representing a good value for a Swiss watch is usually what you get with Louis Erard timepieces. None of those unspoken mottos change with the new for 2011 Heritage Sport Chronograph Automatic watch. You pretty much have a steel sports chronograph watch with applied Roman numeral hour markers. This watch doesn't attempt to "rock the boat" at all, but just offers something with wide appeal.

The 42mm wide case is in steel and dial colors available include blue, black, and silver. There is also a women's model with mother-of-pearl and diamonds. The polished bezel slopes dramatically, while there is another slope on the inside of the dial for the flange ring that has the tachymeter scale on it. This will give the appearance of a "deep-set' dial. The hands are large and lume covered for easy reading. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic movement. With large pushers and an easy to read face, the Louis Erard Heritage Sport Chrono won't win and fancy design awards, but will likely offer a painless wearing experience. Translated - makes for a good gift.

JeanRichard Highlands Sand Sport Watch

A great new sports watch from JeanRichard this SIHH, The Highlands Sands Sport is just what the doctor ordered, but I fear its price might be a bit too high. Popularized through a few generations of soldiers, the military watch look often has a canvas strap, and a bold, easy to read no-nonsense dial. It is also easy on the eyes and in fashion today given the popularity of the vintage active look.

Based on the design of the Aquascope, the Highlands Sands Sport sheds the diver watch label, now being in the brand's new "Bressel" collection. The case is still 44.5mm wide in a sand-blasted steel. It has a GMT style rotating bezel, but this isn't a GMT watch. I love the looks of it, but there isn't much super new except for the colors and the strap. Inside the watch is JeanRichard's in-house made JR1000 automatic movement. People are used to paying a few hundred dollars for watches of this personality, but the Bressel Highlands Sand Sport will be around $6,000. This sort of forces it to be in the hands of the high-fashion elite who was a neat looking retro-military themed watch, but with an in-house made high-end Swiss movement. Though aside from the high price, it is a good looking piece I'd be happy to strap of from time to time.

Swarovski Octea Sport White Ceramic Watch

Couldn't resist, could you Swarovski? The allure of making a white ceramic watch was just too powerful. White ceramic watches being highly in style and in demand, and with Swarovski's hit Octea Sport collection, it was just a matter of time before a white ceramic version was offered. Well it isn't a ceramic watch in the purely traditional sense with a ceramic case and bracelet. Swarovski in a sense is doing things their own way. This is more a matter of replacing their standard use of faceted crystals with facet cut pieces of white ceramic.

Therefore, you have a 39mm wide steel case with a faceted crystal in the bezel (which looks great). The case has ceramic elements built on it. The face has a white lacquered watch dial, and a white rubber strap with ceramic element built into the strap (which in other models would be crystal). Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA quartz movement. The Octea Sport is one of my favorite women's watches of today, and now with the almost all white tone will garner further appeal. Look for it in 2011 and probably still priced under $1000.

TechnoMarine Cruise Sport Chocolate Watch

Yum! TechnoMarine will offer two versions of their newer Cruise Sport watches in delicious chocolate tone. I must admit the brown with rose gold tone is a nice look. What will you wear it with? No idea, I am no fashion expert, but the look is certainly fun. Seen here is the 45mm wide Cruise Sport Chocolate Chronograph, while a smaller 40mm wide Cruise Sport Chocolate with a more simple three hand day/date movement is also available. You can see a full review of the TechnoMarine Cruise Sport watch here.

The watch is in steel, but covered with a rubber/silicone wrap that matches the strap. The bezel is PVD coated in a rose gold tone, while lighter browns and white even out the design. Inside both watches are Japanese quartz movements. While brown watches are not color of the year - who cares. The style is unique (tasty looking) and certainly emits a degree of warmth that goes along with TechnoMarine's beachy theme. Look for these TechnoMarine Cruise Sport Chocolate watches soon with a retail price of $425 - $525.

Bertolucci Bella Costa Casual Chic Sport Two Time Zone Watch

Bertolucci is a brand that continually provides me with things to write about. Whether it is a cool new watch, or a watch with a dial that reminds me of so many things (read about that here). New this month is the Bertolucci Bella Costa Casual Chic Sport collection, and it comes in a few styles. My favorite is this two time zone model that has a small subsidiary dial for the second time zone. Really neatly integrated, and legible in orange. There is also a PVD black version with a black dial that is also available. Never straight forward in appearance, the watch plays with asymmetry that is symmetrical. The bezel is thicker on one side than the other, and is balanced out by the same treatment for the flange ring, and the Arabic numeral hour indicator ring. Interesting right?

The case is 41mm wide in steel, with brushed and polished surfaces. The bezel and inner links on the bracelet are in PVD black. The all black version of the watch is in... all PVD black. Dial is sapphire and domed with a good amount of AR coating for legibility. The dial is textured and done well. There is something almost Dali-esque to the look in my opinion. Inside the watch is a Swiss Ronda 4210.B quartz movement with two time dials and a big date indicator. If you really want to splurge, you can get the all black version with a diamond studded bezel. Overall this new Bella Costa Sport collection is fun, and useful, and should be available soon.

Swarovski Octea Sport Orange Watch

My favorite Swarovski watch is back for 2010 and even sportier. I discussed the Octea watches here last year and was pleasantly impressed with the design. It was an interesting combo between women's sport watches, and popular glass crystal maker. I commented that if they made a men's version, I would probably wear it. As such, I think almost any woman interested in a sporty (and relatively affordable) watch would dig one of these. The case is in steel, 39mm wide, and has a series of crystals placed in it. Who'd a thought you'd ever see a rotating diver's bezel with Swarovski crystals in it?

For 2010 the watch gets an orange redo. Mostly the same from last year, but now primed for even more action. I like how they kept the swan logo at the 12 o'clock indicator - but now it is in orange. It it wasn't for all the faceted stones, I would say the watch more or less is a men's design - but that is very trendy for women these days. Movement is a Swiss quartz, and it comes with a rubber strap or a metal bracelet. Both of these have inset faceted hematite stones that really give it a cool look. There is another swan logo placed in the crown as a cabochon. Really a cool women's watch collection from Swarovski. Plus, the Octea Sport watches are all about $800 - $900 in price.

Harry Winston Ocean Diver Chronograph Watch

Harry Winston continues to fill out its line of sport watches with another Ocean Diver, this time a chronograph. A logical layout and color scheme for the chronograph subdials makes sense matched up to the luxury of 18k rose or white gold. The watch also contains copious amounts of Zalium - a special Harry Winston only metal alloy made up of aluminum and zirconium. Realize that "Ocean" is a name applied to an entire line of Harry Winston watches, so calling this watch the "Ocean Diver" Chronograph is not just a silly obvious statement. Harry Winston will not be releasing a "pond" or "stream" diver. The case is an admirable 44mm wide with three dial colors that are slate, silver, or rose gold. A fine looking dive watch with a nice rubber strap and the name of a good luxury brand attached to it. Pricey at between $36,400 and $39,400 dollars.

Future Vision? Tesla Roadster Sport Cars Seen Charging

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

I snapped these pictures while at the Pebble Beach Concours de Elegance auto show recently. I caught these two new Tesla Roadster Sport all electric sport cars charging quietly behind the scenes. like any electric car, all Teslas need to be charged to juice up. You can see the large plug that comes supplied with the car. I am not totally sure if it can use a stand wall socket, but I don't think so. You probably need a special set up. Unlike gassing up your car, to charge an electric car you need to wait hours, not minutes.

Look into the cabin of the car and you'll find a charging status screen. A green progress bar like you'd find on a laptop computer or mobile phone is accompanied by a mileage indicator of how far you can go on the current charge. While the Tesla is charging, a light around the plug glows and beats to indicate charging is taking place.

Strolling by the scene it seems almost natural, until I realized that this is likely something we will see lots more of in the future. Not to mention the fact that most people have never seen an electric car charging, or even a Tesla for that matter. Gone here are the manicured details of the inside of a showroom or auto show. This image is just what you'd see by having your own Tesla (if you are lucky enough to get one) charging quietly in your driveway or garage. As times go on, more and more electric car charging spots are popping up all over the country. I am sure your city has at least a few with major cities having dedicated parking spots with chargers and more.

Hearing the Tesla start up and drive off is another strange experience. Unlike the bellows of a Ferrari, or the growls of a Lamborghini, the Tesla has a no engine noise, and just the soft sounds of a transmission and tire noise. Like a large radio controlled model car, but made for people. Tesla has had a lot of financial problems, but thankfully many have come to its rescue and the cars are finally ready for prime time.

Swarovski Octa Sport Lady's Watches

swarovski octea sport watchThis is a very sexy and sporty watch line from Swarovski who finally decided to release their own line of watches this year as opposed to simply provide crystals to others (I don't think they are going to stop supplying crystals anytime soon though). Here is also one of those occasions that I am a bit jealous, as I could easily see a slightly modified version of this watch being perfectly good for men. As such, the steel case is 39mm wide - in the men's watch size territory. Although this version is in white, there are different colors of the watch available including dark blue, magenta, black, and pink. My feeling is that the watches are thematically similar to the Chanel J12 line being light and airy, but highly functional timepieces. While the J12 is in ceramic, the Octea Sport has a range of faceted Swarovski crystals all over the watch and strap or bracelet that likely make for an impressive look. The watch itself is based on a diver's watch theme complete with rotating diver's bezel.

The crystals on the watch range from being totally clear to clouds for a variety of looks that out to make it interesting, especially in the color-toned models. The collection was first announced last March at Baselworld and in my opinion was quite impressive from the brand who was not expected to release its own line of watches. The Octea Sport line have Swiss quartz movements inside while at least this white model is available with a rubber strap or a steel metal bracelet - both of which are lined with large horizontally applied crystals which make for a good look. The watches are available now at various locations including on Swarovski's own website. The Octea Sport line is about $800 - $850 - not too bad.

Chopard Happy Sport Chrono Watch

This aggressive overhaul of the Chopard women's Happy Sport Chrono watch line is a powerful departure from the line's 'cutesy' demeanor. If it wasn't for the floating diamonds and Happy Sport name, I might have mistaken this for a men's watch. The rounded links in the bracelet have been made more angular, while the deeply grooved rotating bezel is a reminder of how hard this woman's watch can punch. It is a pretty bad-ass watch for something with the word "Happy" in the title. Although price will be over $5,000, this Chopard Happy Sport Chronograph watch will feature a Swiss quartz movement and be in stainless steel (a bit pricey if you ask me). The diamonds literally move around freely - though they are placed in a metal setting - in a middle plane between two sapphire crystals. The dial with the chronograph subdials is below.

Something about the fact that Chopard chose to place this type of watch against a pink background amuses me. It certainly does suffer from some degree of gender confusion. I don't know if the pink color choice is Chopard trying to convince themselves, or trying to convince us - that this is a girly watch. It's OK, either way I accept you Chopard Happy Sport Chrono watch, whatever you are.
