Speake-Marin Marin 2 Mk1 Thalassa Limited Edition Watch

Independent luxury watch maker Peter Speake-Marin has just announced the new limited edition of just 30 pieces Marin 2 Mk1 Thalassa watch. It uses his newer all in-house made and designed SM2m manually wound mechanical movement. Similar in design to the SM2a automatic movement, the SM2m has a different visual design and character. The attractive movement with its graceful bridges is viewable through the sapphire crystal caseback window. Speake-Marin does a good job making movement attractive as well as unique compared to what else it out there.

The case is in 18k white gold, 42mm wide and in Speake-Marin's "Piccadilly" style. The dial is partially skeletonized with the rest being in all blued steel with while hour indicators. The subsidiary seconds dial is in the shape of the rotor that Speake-Marin uses in his automatic watches. I like the large lume covered hands making this watch both eye-pleasing and practical. Note the large date disc with staggered numerals to account for its diagonal window location. While the watch might not sway new fans to the brand (Speake-Marin's more simple offerings might be best for that), the Thalassa is a good addition to his collection and an interesting object for brand fans.

Peter Speake-Marin 1in20 QP Limited Edition Watch

Independent watch maker Peter Speake-Marin releases his newest highly limited timepiece - the 1in20 QP. A limited edition of literally just a few pieces - several of which are 'piece uniques.' The watch houses his manufacture made calendar movement with the time, month, day, date, and moon phase. I do not believe the watch is a perpetual calendar. The "1in20" name refers to the fact that the watches will be the first 20 to house Speake-Marin's new SM2 Caliber automatic movement. I am glad that it is not manually wound, given these types of complications. Using the now well regarded Peter Speak-Marin watch case, size is at about 40mm wide and in either 18k white or rose gold.

While the case is impressive and has a nice sapphire crystal caseback, the dial of the watch is classic looking and beautiful. The dial is made from German silver (not actually silver but a type of nickle alloy) and enjoys a thoughtfully laid out dial and guilloche machine engraving decoration. Blue SuperLumiNova sits on the hands and hour marker points for darkness glowing. A supremely classy watch with an in-house movement and hand made quality. Prices...will be up there.
