Mundo Gay, A Spanish Wine for the Gay Community

While the idea of a wine titled Gay World struck me as an April Fool's joke at first it turns out that Mundo Gay is a new wine from Ribera del Duero that is meant to honor the gay community. The wine is produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Robeal in Spain's Roa de Duero. Gay marriage has now been introduced in Spain and according to Mundo Gay spokesman Fernando Martín, the wine is meant to open the minds of those in the small argricultural area of Ribera del Duero. The wine is from 100% Tempranillo grapes and sells for 20 euros a bottle.

Tinto Figuero Noble 2003 Wine

The May issue of The Tasting Panel has an article on hot wines from Spain and Portugal. The Garcia Figuero winery is a labor of love for Jose Maria Garcia and Milagros Figuero, a wine-growing couple who focus on Tempranillo grapes in the Ribera Del Duero region. Their showcase wine is the 2003 Figuera Noble. The grapes for this wine are sourced from estate vineyards over 70 years of age. The wine was then aged in new barrels for 21 months, the first 15 in American oak, and the last 6 months in French Allier and Troncais oak and is aged 15 months in the bottle before leaving the cellar. The result is a deeply purple wine with a nose of candied black fruits and taste of chocolate and berries. It sells for around $160.

Spain Supports Cork Closures For Wine

While many fine wine companies are embracing alternative closures that won't be happening in Spain any time soon. Drinks Business Review reports that Spain has determined that only bottles with cork closures will achieve the Denominacion de Origen (DO) status (Spain's version of France's AOC). The DO classification
affects still and sparkling wines in 11 of Spain's wine producing regions.  The primary growing region for cork trees is Portugal and southern Spain. The law is good news for APCOR, a consortium of cork companies. APCOR recently launched a $3 million campaign to promote the use of corks. In related cork news, a study recently released claims that the cork and wine combo creates beneficial anti-tumor compounds. The study was done for the Association of Industries and Exporters of Cork to find reasons that cork is good for wine.
