Aviara Resort Switches From Four Seasons To Hyatt

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

Last year we wrote about the troubles facing the Four Seasons Aviara. The luxury resort north of San Diego has finally left the Four Seasons fold. Hyatt has announced that Broadreach Capital Partners and Maritz, Wolff & Co. have selected Hyatt to brand and manage Aviara Resort as part of its luxury Park Hyatt portfolio.

The resort and spa has a great setting with ocean views but this idyllic retreat has been filled with controversy. Since last year the owners said that the Four Seasons financially mismanaged the Aviara and they struggled to replace it with a new operator. The LA Times reports that an arbitration panel found that Four Seasons did not violate the management agreement but found that both parties had a share in the disintegration of good relations and that it was best that the arrangement be terminated.

Hyatt will assume management of the hotel on June 21, 2010, when Park Hyatt Aviara Resort will become the 25th property operating under the Park Hyatt brand.

Claridge's Embraces 1930's Hollywood Glamour with New Spa Treatments

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

A view of a treatment room at the Spa at Claridge's in London
Claridge's, the iconic Art Deco landmark in Mayfair, has unveiled a selection of beauty treatment designed to recapture the timeless glamour of a bygone era.

Following in the footsteps of Hollywood's leading ladies and gentlemen, to many of whom Claridge's was a second home, the beauty therapists at the Spa at Claridge's have carefully created individual regimes, each with a particular icon in mind, with treatments such as "The Clark Gable" and "The Grace Kelly."

The treatment menu provides a form of nostalgic escapism, offering an immersive opportunity to experience pampering styles and grooming techniques inspired by the golden age of Hollywood. Should guests crave 'alone-time', Claridge's beauty therapists will recommend "The Greta Garbo", inspired by the 1930's Swedish screen siren who was famously known for the line "I want to be alone." This restorative ritual includes a one hour Swedish massage, a one hour cellular La Prairie facial and a light lunch for one. The cost is £222 ($340).

Spa Treatments For Pregnant Moms-to-Be

spa massage pregnantThere's something at the spa for everyone, and although some treatments are off limits during pregnancy (like the hot tub and sauna) many spas cater to expecting mothers with specials and packages created just for them. A great gift or self indulgence year round, a day at the spa also makes great Mother's Day gift for the mom-to-be in your circle.

Pregnancy massages are offered by most medical spas and are geared towards relieving unpleasant symptoms associated with being pregnant like swelling, bloating, aches, pains, and of course stress. Facials, manicures, pedicures, and many other spa treatments are considered safe during pregnancy but might be tailored to use mild or unscented products due to the sensitive skin and systems many pregnant women experience. Check with your spa to see what's available and what guidelines they may have (i.e. only available during certain trimesters), and of course consult your physician prior to receiving treatment. Here are some current offerings from around the country.

Custom Moms-to-Be Package at the Medical Spa at Nova in Ashburn, VA.
Includes a soothing pregnancy massage, a healing Body Contouring Wrap, a signature spa lunch, and a single long-stem rose at checkout.

Yummy Tummy Body Treatment at Edamame Maternity Day Spa in New York, NY.

Pregnancy Jade Stone Massage at La Petite Retreat in Los Angeles, CA.
Their signature, the Jade Stone Massage uses hot and cool stones to relax muscles and reduce inflammation along with Swedish, Deep, Shiatsu and Thai massage techniques for long lasting therapeutic results.

A Visit to The Bardessono in California's Wine Country

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

As with most resorts, the first thing you'll notice at Bardessono in Yountville, Calif., is the lobby. But this one's a bit different from the usual. Swaths of plants grow on strings running from the floor to the ceiling, nourished by nothing but the air. A sepia sculpture made from recycled newspaper hangs on a parallel wall. Those might be unusual touches at a normal hotel, but in the Napa Valley's premier eco-lodge, it's par for the course.

Founded in February of 2009, Bardessono, which was a Luxist Awards' nominee for best green spa in March, boasts the largest renewable power system of any hotel in North America. Over 900 photovoltaic panels convert the sun's energy into 260,000 kilowatt hours annually; unused output is sold back to the grid. The resort is heated and cooled by a network of 82 geothermal wells that stretch 300 feet below the grape vines out front. Motion sensors control lights and shades in each of the 62 rooms, ensuring that nearly nothing goes to waste. Along those lines, you won't find plastic bags in the hotel's wastepaper baskets, and filtered water is served in reusable glass jugs instead of bottles. Even the bathroom toiletries come in big, refillable bottles instead of the disposable (and easily pilfered) airline-safe containers.

Bardessono's dining room keeps with the resort's "deep green" mission statement. The delicious, heavily organic menu draws from local farms and fisheries; most of the wines hail from nearby vineyards as well. Like the guest rooms, which are free of the rugs, bedspreads and curtains deemed unnecessary by the green police, the dining room is somewhat spare. The only flourishes are a wispy, LED-lit chandelier and a magnificent long wood table made from a reclaimed tree trunk. A few paintings – or eco-friendly art installments – would be a welcome addition.

The resort's strongest point is its integrated spa services. Though there's a dedicated spa near the communal pool and hot tub, each guest room is designed to accommodate two massage tables and two masseurs. Call ahead to book a couple's massage and watch as your room is transformed into a miniature spa, complete with tea lights and soothing music piped in from Sirius Satellite Radio's unlikely spa channel. Bardessono's massage therapists will customize your treatment no matter how specific (they proved adept at soothing this writer's keyboard-addled wrists). When they're done, they'll leave you to luxuriate on the massage table as long as you like.

Bardessono guests don't have to worry about staying sober enough to drive – the resort is less than ten minutes by foot from fine restaurants including the French Laundry, the only establishment in the area to earn Michelin's coveted three star rating. Don't forget to check out one of the nearby tasting rooms, especially the new and funky Ma(i)sonry. Bardessono also offers a bike shop where guests can rent cycles for free.

As a Napa Valley connoisseur might say, Bardessono is a little young. Barely a year old, there are still trees that need to grow taller and walls that perhaps need more adornment. But the amenities and design elements are there – like a fine wine, Bardessono will only get better with age. In the meantime, guests can enjoy a fine spa and resort on a clean environmental conscience.

The Classicist: A Puerto Rican Renaissance at St. Regis Bahia Beach Residences

Filed under: Dining, Luxury Travel & Hotels, Sports, The Classicist, Real Estate Developments

One of the Caribbean's finest residential and vacation enclaves is taking shape on 483 pristine beachfront acres in Puerto Rico, at the foot of the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System. At the vanguard of what promises to be a true Puerto Rican renaissance is the stunning Bahia Beach community with a St. Regis resort and residences as its centerpiece. Located within 25 minutes driving distance of San Juan, Bahia Beach boasts a magnificent two-mile crescent of sandy beach, a challenging 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., golf and beach clubhouses, and a charming seaside village. St. Regis Hotels & Resorts will operate the intimate St. Regis Resort, Bahía Beach, which will include an ultra-luxurious hotel and spa slated to open this fall. As any visitor to Bahia Beach can attest, its naturally perfect setting inspires dreams of permanent residence. Bahia Beach offers a number of ways to make the dream a reality, with a variety of homes including St. Regis Residences, Las Estancias estate homes, resort residences, golf and ocean view villas, and beachfront townhomes available in advance of the resort's official opening.

The resort will feature the signature St. Regis Butler and St. Regis Concierge service, a world-class Remède Spa and Fitness Center, a 120-seat Jean-Georges Vongerichten signature restaurant as well as a 90-seat St. Regis restaurant, retail shops and beachfront pool facilities. The tropical, unspoiled splendor of Bahia Beach, located on Puerto Rico's northeast coast at the foot of the El Yunque rain forest and bounded by two scenic rivers, can easily lead you to imagine a remote idyll, yet part of its appeal lies in the community's convenience and accessibility. U.S. residents don't need to bother with passports or worry about currency exchange, while the distance from New York for example is not all that much more than Miami. Once a coconut plantation, Bahía Beach is richly populated with 100-foot palms and other tropical trees, inhabited by myriad species of birds and the vivid green iguanas native to the coast. Over 65% of the property has been preserved as green areas, sanctuaries and nature trails; the Bahía Beach Resort & Golf Club is Puerto Rico's first resort community to become a Certified Gold Audubon International Signature Sanctuary.

All residences sold within Bahía Beach include social membership in the community's private club, providing members with special dining and recreational privileges and services. Upgrades to full golf club memberships are also available. The signature St. Regis Residences, Las Estancias, will offer 25 majestic estate homes introducing an unrivaled dimension of luxury and hospitality to Puerto Rico. Located on a private island within the Bahía community and designed in a tropical plantation architectural style on spacious lots, these residences are available in six different models with floor plans offering large verandas, three-car garages, infinity edge swimming pools and separate maid's quarters. Homes are sized from 6,000 to 9,000 square feet and built on half acre to 1.5 acre lots with stunning ocean and golf course views. The first homes have already been delivered and one well-known major league baseball player has already taken up residence. Owners of Las Estancias will enjoy full access to St. Regis Resort amenities including the signature St. Regis Butler and St. Regis Concierge. Read on for details of the rest of the residences, and check out the gallery for stunning images.

Calistoga Ranch Wins Best Green Spa Award
Many establishments tout their low impact on the environment, but Calistoga Ranch in California takes green to a new level. Its harmony with the Upper Napa Valley's pristine wilderness makes it an obvious choice for a nomination for a Readers' Choice Award in Luxist's best green spa category.

Founded in 2004, Calistoga is nestled in a secluded canyon a mere 90-minute from San Francisco by car. Set on 157 acres, the resort boasts 47 guest lodges and 27 owner lodges, all of which are designed to share the feel of a vintner's estate. The lodges were all built to ensure that the area's streams, lakes and ancient oak trees wouldn't be disturbed; each lodge features floor-to-ceiling glass doors that create a seamless flow into the resort's copious outdoor deck space.

Calistoga's spa is adorned with warm wood and encircled by trellised walkways. Relax in soaking pools shaded by mossy oaks above and graced by a babbling brook below or head inside to receive organic treatments in a private room. Afterward, recline on deck chairs and gaze out into the expansive forest before you.

Try the spa's "Calistoga Cure" treatment, an exfoliating salt body scrub followed by a mineral bath in your own private outdoor tub, a polarity session, and a massage. Or check out the "Soul Soother," which begins with a yoga session in your own lodge and continues with an aromatherapy massage at the spa and ends with a lunch at the onsite Lake House restaurant – all without ever leaving your personal Napa paradise.

The Golden Door: Five Retreats for Rediscovering Your Health

There are five Golden Door Spas in the US and Puerto Rico, and each has its own unique charm -- so much so, that the entire collection has been nominated for a Readers' Choice Award for Best Extended Day Spas.

The predecessor of Golden Door was founded by Deborah Szekely in Mexico in 1940, starting with modest bring-your-own-tent retreats. Szekely's philosophies about health and fitness attracted a broad base of followers, which led her to open the revolutionary Golden Door in 1959, which "combined intensive training in personal health with gracious hospitality, inspired by the ancient Honjin inns of Japan." Spa Escondido is still running today as a Golden Door Spa.

Today, four of the Golden Door Spas are located on Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts properties, while the original Golden Door is a LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotels property, ensuring your stay is seamless and tranquil. Each Spa offers its own site-specific perks. For example, at the original Spa Escondido, you can indulge in a week long stay (they have men's, women's and co-ed programs) to not just relax and rejuvenate, but truly rediscover your health and learn smarter daily practices along with the help of 39 other people there for the same purpose. This is a fantastic way to get back into shape if you've fallen off the wagon, as well as to make meaningful new friends.

The world-renowned Spa Ojai, located on the resort grounds, offers an extensive menu of experiences ranging from traditional massage and skincare treatments to one-of-a-kind and seasonal signature treatments unique to Spa Ojai. Take for example, the "Kuyam", which is the signature mud treatment at Spa Ojai. It is a Chumash word that translates as "a place to rest together," however the Kuyam also takes inspiration from the traditional healing rituals from many cultures. This treatment combines the therapeutic effects of cleansing mud, dry heat, inhalation therapy and guided meditation.

Essence in Balance is one of the newest therapies at Spa Ojai, and is also one of the most personalized and unique treatments available. Guests begin their 3.5 hour session at the Artist's Cottage & Apothecary, where they create a personalized blend of essential oils to address whatever/however they are feeling or are needing at that exact moment in time. The oil is then used for their massage, providing an aroma-therapeutic treatment that culminates into a truly healing
experience.

Fregate Island Private: Exclusive and Secluded

More than 500 miles off the coast of East Africa lies Frégate Island, one of the world's most exclusive and secluded spas. Unlike most oceanic resorts, Frégate is in the process of repairing its local ecosystem, not destroying it – making it a nominee for a Luxist award in the best green spa category.

Founded in 2000, this slice of Seychelles paradise was created with the coal of reversing over 200 years of destructive practices such as coconut and cinnamon growing, as well as tortoise harvesting. Today, Frégate's sanctuary boasts the second-largest herd of Aldabra Giant tortoises in the world. Guests can pay a fee to sponsor or "adopt" one of the animals until it is ready to be released into the island's jungle.

The tiny island includes 16 regular villas and one super-luxurious Presidential Villa, creating an opportunity to relax in true seclusion. Once there, the cliff-top Rock Spa offers panoramic ocean views, pools and waterfalls, and of course the treatments one would expect from such an establishment: various scrubs and oils made from the freshest possible ingredients.

Frégate's most unusual trait is its extreme isolation from the rest of the world – a welcome break from the daily grind – but it will cost you. Round trip flights include at least two stopovers (usually in Doha, Qatar and Mahé, Seychelles) and typically cost over $2,500 total. If money is no object, Frégate may end up being the trip of a lifetime.

Cast your vote for your favorite spa until March 31st. Winners will be announced on April 1.
