The Scent of the Plaza

plaza scent

Looks like The Plaza Hotel in New York has been thinking some thing over and asked itself a question worthy of Scarface: why take a cut when we can have the whole thing? Instead of selling eau de parfum from from another maker, the Plaza has commissioned its own from haute parfumery Krigler. Said to remind one of "grace, beauty, elegance and style," it is an assemblage of the scents that have been doing that for centuries, such as bergamot, grapefruit and leather.

Intriguingly, the hotel has elected to call this olfactory joy "The Plaza," where we might have thought they'd give it a name a little less institutional. If nothing else, though, it gives us a good reason to move up from our other hotel fragrance, The Howard Johnson's. You can avail yourself of The Plaza at the hotel's shop in soap, candle, or eau de parfum, the last of which runs $95 for 1.7 ounces.

Isabelle Fields was inspired by the story of a little girl named Alex from Philadelphia who successfully raised a staggering 6 million dollars for cancer research through sales from her lemonade stand! Isabelle vowed to do the same, she began making scented soaps and candles, sales took off instantly... and every penny goes straight to cancer research programs and children's hospitals. Her cause is getting quite a bit of press, I first heard about her products in Us Magazine. We're not there yet but the holidays are just around the corner, and along with them all the stress of thinking up gift ideas for everybody and finding time to shop. Some bath and body products probably belong on your shopping list regardless, whether as a gift for someone or just a way to help yourself relax amidst the annual holiday stresses, and I'm thinking the Usiku Organic Bath Collection sounds particularly good since they work for men or women and I love all things organic (not to mention the fragrance description sounds heavenly).

The collection from Jo Wood includes body soap, body lotion, body oil, and bath oil, and prices range from $24-$125 each.

Nephria Jade Bar

A company called Newbert Revolution claims to be selling the world's most expensive soap. They are a bit off, we've seen at least one pricier bar but Neprhira is still worthy of noting at least for curiosity's sake. It is created from nephrite (jade powder) along with apricot, olive and jojoba oils. The jade comes from a special seam in South Korea which is said to have healing properties which improve the skin's moisture and lipid balance and have a calming effect on skin problems such as inflammation and acne. The Nephria Jade Beauty Bar costs £17.99 (around $35).

Tomato soap? How about eggplant? Lafco, the same folks that make the sumptuous Claus Porto soaps also make Sapone Per Cucina, a collection of fruit and vegetable soaps, wrapped up in charming homespun packages. Each large 11.2 ounce bar with 2% shea butter is hand milled seven times and aged for over two weeks. The soaps are perfect for the kitchen and remove strong odors like onion and garlic. The soaps come in carrot, plum, pomegranate, pear., tomato and eggplant and sell for $12.
