Luxe Skis by Bentley & Paul Smith

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Sports

The sport of skiing gets a luxe boost this season from the automotive and fashion worlds thanks to new collaborations between Bentley, Paul Smith and high-end sporting good firms. Bentley has partnered with Swiss firm Zai on a "Supersports" set (top) comprised of handmade skis, poles and a ski bag worthy of bearing the famed British marque's moniker, limited to 250 pairs. The skis are fashioned from a special carbon fiber material called "Zaiìra" with a natural rubber core, and chromium-steel-infused carbon fiber for the flexible components backed up by Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites.

The Zai Supersports poles use the ExoGrid tech usually associated with the world of golf clubs. Each pair is priced at $9,800, making them some of the priciest skis on the snow. British designer Smith meanwhile has collaborated with Austrian experts Edelwiser on a pair of skis decorated in his signature multicolored stripes (above). Dubbed the Paul Smith Swing 162, at $1,000 a pair they're far more reasonable than the Bentleys. Every pair of Edelwiser skis is hand-made and built with state of the art materials like wood cores, laminated sidewalls and graphite bases for optimized flex and torsion characteristics.

Wake Up (Early) Wherever You Are, Ski in Park City Free that Afternoon

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Sports

Skiing in Park City, Utah

One of the advantages that Park City, Utah has over other Western ski destinations is its convenience -- it lies 35 major highway minutes east of Salt Lake City's airport. So if your desire to ski exceeds the time you have available to devote to the slopes, you don't have to lose an entire day to transportation: wake up at dark-thirty almost anywhere in the United States and catch a flight into Salt Lake and board your chair lift by the afternoon.

To sweeten the deal, you don't even have to buy a lift ticket on your first day. The Quick START Vacation program allows you to convert your boarding pass into a lift ticket at Deer Valley Resort, The Canyons Resort, or Park City Mountain Resort. You need to register in advance online for a voucher, which you present along with your boarding pass, a non-Utah driver's license or other official state identification at the ticket window.

Make sure you read all the rules and regulations on the website, since there's no flexibility in these requirements. Like, if you're a person who shuns printing boarding passes at home and relies on your PDA for check-in, you're going to need to change your ways to get this deal. And if the airline wants to keep your boarding pass, you're going to need to put up a fight.

As you'd expect there are also black out dates: you're not going to get this deal over Christmas week (December 25th, 2009 to January 2nd, 2010) or from Valentine's Day weekend through March 27th, 2010.

There are more Park City deals and promotions to be had, and I'm particularly keen on is a package offered by The Sky Lodge which is throwing in a complimentary breakfast and a 50 minute spa treatment with each night's stay November 26th to April 13th, 2010. The spa treatment deal is especially nice since the Sky Lodge's Amara spa offers all of its massage and body treatment clients a soak in traditional wooden Japanese tubs called Ofuro baths. Per Japanese tradition, you shower before entering the tub, which is filled with piping hot water I'll admit that the soak made me a little nauseous when I visited this past summer (when it was nearing an unusually sultry 85 degrees outside) but it would definitely be just the thing after a day on the slopes. Once again, there are blackout dates during peak periods, so from December 26, 2009 - January 2, 2010, January 21 – 31, 2010 and February 10 – 15, 2010, you'll be paying for your own spa treatment and breakfast.

Brrrr, Polo in the Snow

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Sports

Polo in the snow? The sport, which is usually played in the balmy summer months, takes a chilly turn with the 24th Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow which is held from January 24-27 2008 in St. Moritz. The tournament takes place on a frozen lake and 25,000 spectators are expected. Grandstand tickets for the 24th Cartier cost 40 Swiss francs per person per day with and additional 10 Swiss francs for parking on the lake but the pricey part is finding a place to stay. There is also a polo party on January 26 at the Kings Club, Badrutt's Palace.

Photo of Yeti Footprint Sold for £3,500

Do believe in the yeti? The infamous "Abominable Snowman?" I'm more than a little skeptical, but I can still get on board with this photo that sold at Christie's in London last week for £3,500 because it looks like a fun conversation piece.

The Abominable Snowman is in the same league as Bigfoot and the Lochness Monster, but art and photography don't always have to be about truth or some kind of deep meaning -- sometimes pure entertainment is reason enough to value something.

But I have to say, doesn't this look the footprint of a large teddy bear? Big round toes, no claws or anything...maybe it was just that friendly "Bumble" from Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer?

Official Tourist Hoodies

These detached, reversible hoods are not the meant to be worn by the real tourists in San Francisco. They are the creation of SF-based designer Official Tourists. The hood is basically a combination hood and neck-warmer in one, with snaps that secure the wide collar in place. There are a lot of different designs to choose from and, assuming they make it beyond the foggy borders of the Bay Area, these seem like something that will be a hit on the ski slope of Northern California, if not further abroad. Price: $56.

Prada Skis By Volant

We checked out the upcoming Prada phones earlier today, but the new Prada Skis by Volant are far more appealing at the moment. After all - ski season is just hitting its stride while those phones won't be out for several months. The skis are limited edition with a silver finish and Prada's signature red strip in the center, as well as acid-etched logos in the topsheet and die-cut aluminum base logos. Volant has over a half century of experience at ski making and is well known for their high quality work, so it's a good match for Prada, which may be the first fashion house to make a big impact on the slopes in an area other than winter clothing. The skis will be available through Volant dealers. Price: $1,495, including Atomic's 4Tix binding.

Make Snow Indoors with SnoWonder

Ski resorts aren't the only ones that can make their own snow. SnoWonder is "the most amazing man-made snow on the market," and is very similar to real snow in appearance and feel. Unlike the snow made by machines at ski resorts, SnoWonder is made with more than just water and low temperatures. The product was originally developed in Japan for use in indoor ski and snowboard parks and is is a nontoxic plastic based powder that, when combined with water, will expand, as snow, to 50-100 times its original volume. The snow can be used on any surface, with the exception of untreated wood, and is ideal for holiday decorating because it will last last for months indoors. It can also be used outside, although it is recommended that it not be used in direct sunlight, as the only thing that will make this snow vanish is evaporation. A spritz of water from time to time will keep it light and fluffy all year long.

Update: Read my review of SnoWonder to see if it lives up to the hype!

Snow Frosted Tree in Pewter Urn

This Snow Frosted Tree in Pewter Urn looks a bit like something that was a prop in The Chronicles of Narnia last year. Fortunately, that only adds to the romantic, natural look that this tree brings to a room. It stands 5 feet tall and has no lighting built in to it, although you could certainly add an ornament or two if you wanted to bring some color to the elegant, but monochromatic, base look. Price: $160.

The Best Resorts With Artifical Snow

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Manmade snow is far better than it was when the technology was first put into use. A frequent skiier will be able to tell the difference between the natural and the less finely-grained machine-made snow, but it allows resorts to stay open longer into both fall and spring and provide better coverage all over the mountain even in the middle of winter. The manmade snow is also used for creating low-elevation "beginners areas" as well as advanced terrain parks for thrill-seeking snowboarders and skiiers. Many resorts, including big-name ones, spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars making snow each year. As a result, their slopes are more reliably and more evenly covered, which is better for business and better for skiiers. Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal (subscription req'd) compiled a list of some of the top snowmaking resorts and what percentage of their slopes are covered with the stuff to help give you some insight when planning a trip to the mountains this season:
  • Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado (12%)
  • Big Sky Resort, Montana (10%)
  • Crested Bute, Colorado (25%)
  • Jackson Hole, Wyoming (10%)
  • Mammoth Mountain, California (20%)
  • Park City, Utah (33%)
  • Swuaw Valley, California (15%)
  • Stowe Mountain, Vermont (80%)
  • Sunday River, Maine (92%)
  • Taos, New Mexico (50%)
  • Telluride, Colorado (17%)
  • Whistler Blackcomb, British Colombia (7%)

Borbonese Reversible Shearling Bag, Handbag of the Day

If you are thinking about going skiing or up to the mountains this winter, a shearling bag is the best kind to take. Not on the slopes, of course, but shearling always look stylish and snuggly in cold, snowy places. This is the Borbonese Reversible Shearling Bag, with a soft, cream-colored shearling on one side and supple sheepskin on the other. To make the act of turning the bag inside out less of a hassle, the purse has double rolled leather handles that attach to loops at its top edge, which has a drawstring closure. The bag measures 4.75" x 11.75" x 5.5" and the straps have a 10" drop. Price: $1,500.

Hammerhead Sled

Just because you are a grown-up doesn't mean you can't go sledding. The Hammerhead is designed for adults. The sled weighs less than 10 pounds and costs $288.99.
