Million-Dollar Ferraris and More at Gooding & Co. Auction in Arizona

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

It's not every day that a car like the Ferrari FXX Evoluzione goes up for auction. Or a Maserati MC12. Or a Ferrari F40, F50 or 333 SP, for that matter. But these and more are set to cross the auction block in a star-studded line-up presented by Gooding & Company.

The collection of the late Benny Caiola includes the aforementioned FXX (estimated at $2.2-2.5 million), MC12 ($1.1-1.4 million), 333 SP ($800,000-1 million), F40 ($475,000-550,000) and F50 ($750,000-850,000), along with an F430 Challenge race car ($125,000 - $150,000) and 430 Scuderia ($215,000-240,000), 599 HGTE ($275,000-315,000) and 1973 Ferrari Dino ($160,000-180,000) plus a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster ($240,000-325,000) and Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 ($175,000-225,000) for good measure.

The most notable (and valuable) of the collection, the FXX and MC12 are both based on the iconic Ferrari Enzo supercar, but optimized for performance on the race track, while the 333 SP was the last Le Mans Prototype ever built by Ferrari. It's a rare collection to be sure, one that promises to bring in upwards of $7 million in sales when the auction kicks off on January 21 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

It's been a while since we've brought you news on the Mercedes-Benz SLR Mclaren. And with good reason: it was discontinued a year ago, and the two companies behind it have since gone their separate ways. But busy as McLaren is with its own new line of supercars, they've found enough time to bring the SLR back out of retirement for an encore.

The SLR McLaren Edition is a kit to be mounted on existing models, giving the exotic a revised suspension, steering, aerodynamics and interior. Only 25 examples will be offered, making this even more exclusive than the five different variants on the theme offered previously. No word on pricing, but if you already have an SLR sitting in the driveway, something tells us cost will be no object.

Say Goodbye to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

It was one of the most prolific supercars in the history of the supercar. And after 2000 examples built, Mercedes and McLaren are saying goodbye to the SLR, and along with it, one another.

The last of the SLRs – the Stirling Moss speedster – are rolling out of McLaren's factory in Woking, England. The German automaker has sold its stake back to the British racing team and bought a new one. Mercedes has followed with the SLS AMG, and McLaren the MP4-12C. And so ends one of the most intriguing partnerships in automotive history.

A dedicated staff will continue to look after the SLR long after production ends, organizing special events for their owners under the guise of the SLR CLUB. But after five different versions and five years of production, this chapter in both Mercedes and McLaren history draws to a close.

Say Käse: Leica Debuts New $23,000 S2 Digital SLR Camera

For the cost-is-no-object photography crowd, Leica is the be all and end all. We've reported on some of the high-end German optics company's products before, but they've just delved into the professional field of digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras with its new S-System, announcing prices for its initial line-up.

Packed inside a body smaller than most SLRs is a 37.5 million pixel sensor that measures 30x45mm – more than 50% bigger than the industry standard. The camera body alone costs a whopping $23k – and as any serious photog worth his flashbulb will tell you, that doesn't even include a lens. Those start at around five grand, while the cheapest accessory in the catalog is the $400 charger. Upgrading to the sapphire crystal display and what Leica calls its Platinum service costs another five grand, which would be enough to buy a good Nikon or Canon with all the lenses and extra kit you could ask for. But then, of course, they're not Leicas.

Pentax 60th Anniversary 18ct Gold SLR

No way. Posh looks and brains to boot? Heck yea, says Pentax; the company's celebrating their 60th anniversary by combining high-end style with high-end functionality with their new gold-plated ASAHI PENTAX LX Gold. We've recently seen wooden and diamond-crusted shooters, but this puppy comes with some new specs for actual photographers; not only is this SLR covered in 18 carat gold and brown leather, but the camera boasts the "world's first" completely dust-proof and water-proof SLR case design. And just to be safe (or, as it were, a bit more posh), the camera comes complete with a wooden box with red lining and white silk gloves to handle the camera without leaving fingerprints on the sensitive gold plating.
