Tibi Leather Skirt

Featuring a leather skirt now that Summer has officially ended and while designers and retailers are getting us ready to shop for the Fall may seem untimely, but the Tibi Leather Skirt ($585) is an eye catching transitional piece. Although the calendar may say Summer is over, we still have a few more weeks of 'showing-off-my-toned legs' left and nothing grabs people's attention like a leather mini skirt. But be sure you're not inviting the 'pay for services' kind of attention and pair with flats rather than super high heels – your legs will still look great. And once the cool weather arrives, a blouse, well fitted blazer, opaque tights, and heels would be a complementing ensemble.

Alexander Wang Front Tie Shirt Skirt

Alexander Wang is a designer who seems to enjoy pushing the boundaries of fashion. We recently covered his Velvet Sandals where he used shoelaces as a decorative ankle accent and now we feature his skirt-shirt. Made from triacetate, a fabric that rarely wrinkles and looks like silk given its sheen, the Silky Front Tie Shirt Skirt ($385) has center buttons, a full cut and curved hems that falls nicely around the body. The front tie is actually two shirt sleeves with 2 button cuffs for extra quirkiness. It also features deep pockets on either side that makes it more casual and perfect for slipping on with a pair of lace up or sandals and a tank top.

Diane von Furstensberg Ginsy Skirt

Diane von Furstensberg Ginsy SkirtIf the spring sunshine has you itching to show off your lovely legs and you've been searching for the perfect little skirt to do so, then search no more. Ms. von Furstenberg has designed the Ginsy Skirt ($225). First shown at DVF's Spring 2010 show, this entire look is a knockout. The tiger print completely sets this skirt apart from others. The color tone will work with all skin tones and the length (or lack of) adds sexiness without appearing trashy. Using animal print can be a bit tricky to work with. So if not done correctly, it can take away from the overall sophistication of a piece and cheapen the look. Luckily, DVF has a keen eye for working with patterns and always has the ability to bring out the beauty in women.

The Gizmo Skirt

The other day my colleague Annie Scott highlighted Versace's bizarre new skirt. Can anything top it in the oddball department? How about the "Gizmo" skirt by Brian Lichtenberg. The skirt is done in grey tweed with 'ear-pockets' and swarovski crystal eyes in the shape of the Gizmo gremlin from the classic 1984 movie "Gremlins." This piece of fashionable nostalgia will run you $2,100.

Versace's New Mullet Skirt - Business on the Right, Party on the Left

Versace Mullet Skirt
We recently stopped by the Versace showroom to check out their Pre-Fall 2010 collection. The press preview showcased Donatella's personal favorites, one of which was the above mullet skirt.

In all fairness, they didn't call it a mullet skirt; we did, after immediately noticing that a person wearing this would be essentially sporting "business on the right, party on the left." Could this be a new trend for 2010? It takes asymmetry to a whole new level. Not only is the left side (when worn; it's on the right above) a brightly colored archival Versace print styled with a Japanese tecno-pop inspiration (as is much of the collection), but it's shorter.

With this skirt, you could do entirely different right and left side outfits like Prince in that early 90s music video where from one side he's a man, and from the other side he's woman in a dress. Only kidding -- we find this very filmic, though. Imagine the heroine shown first from the left, then she turns and kapow! Not so square anymore. We love a garment that tells a story.

Check out more asymmetrical looks (and the professional shot of the skirt) from the Versace Pre-Fall 2010 collection below.

Luxist Gift Guide 09: Hi-Lo Gladiator Skirt

In our book Alexander McQueen can do no wrong (as long as he stays out of Target). His 2010 S/S show wowed us with a mix of reptilian sea mammals, created with computer generated prints. Our favorite piece, however, from the Lady Gaga-inspired show, was this hot little leather gladiator skirt. Leave it to McQueen to get us off of gladiator sandals once and for all, and wow us again with his apocalyptic couture. It's the perfect gift for your little vixen.

Check out a less-expensive option after the jump.

Gryphon Petticoat

This Gryphon Petticoat looks like it came straight off the runway at an haute couture fashion show. That isn't necessarily a good thing, but if you can pull it off...why not. In a deep chocolaty brown, this lavish blend of cotton and linen has a slightly wrinkled look providing that classic vintage feel. The accompanying red leather belt cinches you in, accentuating the waist line with a large gold buckle. The sizing chart looks like a math problem, I'm pretty sure I would end up ordering one in something not at all my size! This pretty petticoat costs $1,035 and is available on one of my favorite shopping sites chickdowntown.com.

St. Maarten Grand Ball Dame Tee

This unique tank from St. Maarten features an elegant figure in a flowing black ball gown. The gown wraps nearly all the way around the hem of the shirt, ruffles spilling onto the back. The raw, scalloped bottom edge makes the screen printed dress almost appear to melt into the wearer's own clothes! Paired with jeans, this is a fun, bold tee, but with a black bubble skirt to finish it off, the outfit will be a knockout. Price: $79.
